Several years ago, I suggested to Bean an alternative to animal based fillings for jackets.
The results have been slow but good to see more and more alternative fillings being used in cold weather jackets offered through LL Bean..
I ordered this jacket and found it to be much to light. The PrimaLoft fill is so light it is difficult to feel. The jacket construction was good, the fit was good, and the color options were OK, but the fill was way to light. In some areas (the backside) it seemed to be not used at all.
I was disappointed so I decided to return it after trying it on in the house for a few minutes. This jacket has so much potential if it were just filled more with PrimaLoft. I have seen jackets were
PrimLoft is used generously and they are terrific.
I suggested more PrimaLoft to LL Bean in hopes someday I can purchase this same jacket and feel it will keep me warm without layering.
PrimaLoft is an excellent alternative to animal based products. Thanks to LL Bean for trying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BostonAaron Light Warm Jacket
This jacket works well as a spring and fall garment. It's light, yet warm and appears to be well made. I expect that the LLbean quality will allow me to keep it looking new for many years - just as my winter coat has, even after washing it (and it's lined with down).

Bought this for late fall/early spring Boy Scout camping. It is perfect. Well made, great fit. It is SUPER warm, much warmer then I expected. It is also very LIGHT, which is great for backpacking. Stuffs into a tiny ball for storage. I wore my hood multiple times on a cold 24 degree morning and did not mind not having a cinch cord on the hood. It is the right size opening with the right elasticity to do the job. You know LLBEAN does their R&D and does not release bad products. Go ahead and get one of these in the off season while they are on sale...

I do like the primaloft fabric. But there's no string in the hood, just a bit of elastic, so it's not possible to tighten the hood around the face to keep the wind off and the ears warm. Can be worn under a raincoat for warmth.

Exceptional warmth for the weight of the coat. Fits great and great for windy spring days. Been my go to jacket since i got it.

Sized just right and not too tight. Great wind protection and sturdy but not oversized zipper. Hood needs tighteners when going into the wind. Super lightweight for packing or stowing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by HighDesert Ultralight compact jacket
This is my go to jacket for ultralight backpacking. Very warm for its mass, manages wind and sheds very light rain. An external layer will keep the hood cinched in high winds. Compresses into available backpack space or its own pocket and can serve as a small pillow. It is easily laundered and dries very quickly.

The jacket is watertight and can get a little sweaty. Is also warm for its bulk but not enough for below freezing by itself. Worn with layers it sufficed for near-zero.
It could use an added drawstring to tighten the hood around one's face, both to stop breezes and to aid sightlines.
The bright yellow makes me visible walking at night.

I got an 850 down jacket for Christmas and had a problem with it. When I tried to exchange, it wasn't available till June. So, I got the Primaloft Packaway. For my area, the Primaloft is more useful except for about 10% of the time when its cold enough for the down. But, I'm very pleased with the Primaloft and just add layers when needed. XL Tall fits fine. A hood adjust would be a nice to have feature, but I just slide a head band down around my neck and it tightens everything up. Great for walking and outdoor activity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by NewEnglandJonny Excellent product, one gripe only
I bought this jacket at the start of this winter and it has been a cold and snowy one! This jacket is an excellent layer. It is, as advertised, thin and light but it does very well keeping one warm. I've only had to go to my heavier down coat when the temps get in the single digits and lower. It also works well in tandem with my light storm shell as a complete system. It dries out quickly and is an excellent versatile layer. My only complaint is that I wish that one could cinch up the hood around your face. There is not adjustment available. The jacket has good chin coverage but a cinch would make the face protection much better. This has been my go-to jacket this winter for snow clearing and winter sports and will be joining me soon on Mt. Washington.
