Product Details

  • Includes one Black Duck Drake Stand-Up decoy and one Hen Feeder decoy
  • Handpainted in Maine by award-winning decoy maker Steve Brettell
  • A limited edition of 100 sets of two decoys

In the 1930s, avid duck hunter George Soule of Freeport, Maine, worked in the L.L.Bean shipping room. L.L. himself would come down during duck season and say, "George, let's you and I go duck hunting – don't bother to punch out." George was excited to go out with the head of the company but was unimpressed at L.L.'s decoys. He claimed he could "whittle a better bunch of decoys." L.L. took him up on his challenge and Soule retreated to his workshop to develop the first cork decoys. They were incredibly realistic in appearance and how they floated in the water. L.L.'s subsequent duck hunting success improved so much he offered Soule space for the decoys in his catalogs.

Soule later took his design one step further and increased the size of the decoys, making them easier for ducks to see from long distances. They fooled even the wariest waterfowl. Today, Soule's decoys are still considered some of the finest and most effective ever made.

To celebrate L.L.Bean's 100th anniversary, we are proud to present this special collector's edition set of Soule's Black Duck Drake Stand-Up and Hen Feeder Coastal Decoys. The Stand-Up is the sentry in a group of feeding ducks that stays alert to any potential threats. The feeding position is often seen in a marsh or estuary as the Black Duck forages for food.

Each decoy is carved using Soule's original master, then handpainted in fine detail and signed by award-winning decoy-maker Steve Brettell. Brettell was one of Soule's good friends and has been carving and painting decoys for over 25 years. He brings each decoy to life with skill and attention to each feather. Glass eyes and a beveled wooden tail complete the finishing touches. This is a limited-edition run of 100 sets of two decoys. USA and Canada.
