I purchased this bag to use at the gym. It is the large messenger bag. Various zippered sections hold my exercise clothes, shampoo, etc. This bag works for me! I am glad that I purchased it !

Last year, I bought one of the lightweight totes as a work bag. It was great, except that the handles were short, and the weight of my paperwork was causing some serious shoulder pain. I needed a cross-body bag for more even weight distribution. Enter this messenger bag. I have used this bag every day for about six months, and I love it. It holds all of my paperwork and various other little things I carry around, including hair ties, make-up, tissues, cell phone, and a (small) first aid kit. The shoulder pad is comfortable for when I need to carry it for longer periods of time, and it is also comfortable when I'm in a rush and slinging it over one shoulder. The only complaint I have is that the strap is perhaps a little TOO adjustable--I've caught the switch on doors, my desk, etc. and not realized it until the strap is suddenly six feet long.
The medium I ordered is the perfect size to fit a 1" binder, a full-sized planner, pocketbook, and has room for several more folders and even a reading book if I'm so inclined. I love the size; it's big enough without being too large and unwieldy. I don't use the laptop sleeve, since I usually carry a tablet instead of my laptop. The red color looks very sharp, and I think I like it more than the purple I originally wanted (sold out when I ordered).

Rated 4 out of 5áby OutdoorsyBusinessPro Good bag, too much of a good thing?
Good bag, has a lot of great features--I like the zippered main compartment and all the other little pockets and cubbies all over the bag. One suggestion I have is to add a few small inner pockets to the main compartment. I tried both sizes--the medium was actually the ideal size for me, and I would have kept it and been satisfied, but the computer sleeve was too narrow for my 13" wide laptop (it would be good to include the max width that can be accommodated in the product description). I exchanged it (great customer service) for the large, and that's where the "too much of a good thing" comes in. My laptop fit fine, along with all the other stuff that I usually carry, but then the bag just ends up being way too big--and when I'm not carrying a max load, it ends up being way too "baggy", for lack of a better word, and just too much unused space flopping around and hanging from my shoulder. Unfortunately, I am going to send the large back too in favor of a more compact, medium-sized bag from a specialty messenger bag maker, but I just wanted to leave a good review saying Bean's bag is a quality item and probably will work for a lot of people, just not me.

I recently purchased this messenger bag to replace an older one that I had which was the same bag just 8 or 10 years old. The bag itself is just the same and is Great! But the strap is much flimsier and not as sturdy as my older one. The strap seems cheaper. It doesn't stay up on my shoulder like previous style strap did. The bag is just the same and I like it a lot! But, the strap kind of ruins it all for me...

I got my son a messenger bag, his freshman year in high school. 4 years later... he is taking it to collage with him. This messenger bag is made to stand a teenage boy. It is made very well.
Thank You L.L. Bean,

I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with this bag but was I surprised that I like even more than I thought I would! I have several LL Bean bags and book packs. This one is for school so I needed a large one. I am so glad that I decided to buy this because I knew I would love it! Thanks so much for making some of the best products on the market!

i bought this as a birthday gift for my husband. He carries a variety of papers and documents and maps with him whenever he travels, and this is perfect for that. He loves all the pockets and dividers which enables him to organize. It's lightweight, so the bag itself doesn't weigh him down. We don't have enough experience to tell how durable it is, but it appears to be well made, out of quality materials. It's exactly what I expected from the picture and description. He can actually carry more with him than expected - not because it's bigger, but because of the organizational capabilities this bag offers.
As it turns out, he thinks it's actually a bit too big for everyday use. As tourists, we're 'targets' already: he doesn't want to sling it on his back, out of the way. That would make it too easy for pickpockets. But it will still be his carry-on bag and his traveling file cabinet, so to speak, for resources and items that he either can't, or doesn't want, to store electronically.

Rated 5 out of 5áby EmmaGrace Plenty of room, but not too big!
I purchased this bag to replace my heavy, well-used, well-loved leather bag. I ordered this messenger bag in basic black, loved the loud colors, but at my age, thought it might be best to blend in. The reflective piping is perfect. It does the job and doesn't weigh a ton!
I use the bag daily. I feel confident walking home from an evening meeting knowing I can be seen after dark. At first I thought the handle was a little odd, but loaded, and on my shoulder the bag balances well. The clasps function with ease with one hand, which is nice.
If you want lots of room, with plenty of versatile compartments I'd give this one a try. IPad, keys, wallet, phone, etc. Like everything else LLBean, I expect this to hold up for a long time!

Carrying a 4 lb 13" laptop and incidentals. Just doesn't cut it. Frays and separates all over the place. Second one's going back too.

Most days, I look like a walking advertisement for LL Bean. But this messenger bag was a big, big letdown.
I've had several LL Bean messengers over the years. They've always hit the level of quality I've come to expect from Bean products. I think, though, that there may be an issue with the zipper construction on this one. In reading the other 1-star reviews, it seems that several people have had the same problem I had, which is that the bag disintegrated almost the same day I bought it.
The main compartment of the bag is secured with one zipper, attached to a swathe of fabric stitched into the edge around the main opening. The stitching holding the zipper on unraveled pretty much immediately. Within a few days, there was a huge and widening hole at one end of the bag; it wasn't much longer before the entire zipper came off. There were thin, loose threads floating around in the bag this entire time, by the way.
Without the zipper, the main compartment is left unsecured except for the buckle-down flap. The bag is so loosely structured, however (the word "floppy" comes to mind) that the flap provides no realistically secure closure.
I agree with other reviewers that the strap on the old version of the Bean's messenger was better, but I didn't have any particular issues with this one (though the buckled pocket on the old strap was awfully handy, and I did miss that).
So why didn't I just return it? Because I bought it on my way to the airport to head back to Europe, where I live. I'm heading home soon, though, and you can bet I'll be heading back to the store to try and find a better alternative.
I have to say, though, that I really hope this isn't a sign of things to come with Bean products. The reason I'm happy to pay a premium at Bean's is to get products that stand out from the crowd for possessing a high standard of quality often missing in today's planned-obsolescence world. Strike one, LLB. Here's hoping this is just an outlier.
