Rated 5 out of 5 by LittleRedCorvette A review after 8 years of use..
I think I bought this bag 7 or 8 years ago...for reference, it was full priced at $129 at the time. I've used it during the school year ever since (I'm a university professor). This is what goes in on a very busy day: small laptop with soft cover, ipad with cover, iphone, chargers for all three. Lunch consisting of sandwich, apple, orange, banana and yoghurt. Bunch of pens and other small rubbish. wallet. By then it's on the heavy side (I blame the ipad). :) Pro: after eight years of use, it still looks brand new. Con: that means I can't justify a new one. The only downside is the latch coming undone as many others have noted. I see Bean never fixed this. Great bag - especially for what I paid. And STILL LOOKS NEW.

Rated 1 out of 5 by WellDrawn Too heavy to use
Although the black leather is drop-dead gorgeous, this messenger bag is insanely heavy even while empty, making it quite useless, at least for me. There is also a single handle which is too thick to hold easily, and so poorly placed at the back that if the contents were unbalanced, it would be quite a challenge to level it.
I'm disappointed: something this poorly designed is rarely offered at LL Bean. I returned it.

by Tedd1 Weak buckle attachment
I carry this case everyday to work and on business travel. The leather is soft and comfortable and the many pockets are great. It holds my Dell Latitude lap top great. The only problem is the attachment of the buckle to the case is made with a cardboard backing. My cardboard backing tore lose of the leather and fell off. I'll be returning the bag for replacement. I buy LL Bean because I can trust them to stand behind their products.

I bought this in brown for my wife's birthday. She didn't tell me that she didn't like it until she had already taken it to work and got a pen mark on it. She said it was too heavy and wouldn't carry all of her papers. She's-6th grade teacher. So I took it over. I would have preferred black, but I used some Dr. Martin Balsam boot cleaner on the pen mark and it made the leather a little darker which I like. The leather is supple and thick so it is a heavier bag than a canvas bag I have been using. But I'm 6' 2" and 205 lbs so no big deal to me. The inside pockets aren't really well thought out. It would be nice if there was one for my iPad. But it will hold my HP laptop. I like it. Will be flying this weekend so I will see how I like it for travel.

by everydaycustomer buckle issue
When I first purchased this I did read reviews about the buckle coming unlatched during normal use. It did for me as well and then eventually the buckle itself broke. The disconnecting of the buckle happened multiple times(>75% of use) prior to breaking. I actually would insert buckle and pull and check it everytime I used the bag - i think this eventually led to the breaking but it was so darn annoying I had to do it everytime. Improve the buckle or discontinue the bag LL Bean. I eventually returned for a refund after a year.

I am very happy with this bag, it is actually the second one I have purchased...new color. I have appreciated all the various compartments and probably most of all the top zip closure. Many other bags that I looked at had similar functionality but no secure closure at the top. This bag also has a front large slip pocket that is still accessible while the main compartment is closed.
It is a softer slightly slouchy bag which I like, as opposed to other stiffer bags/briefcases. I also like that the strap is adjustable and has all leather on the top with fabric for comfort on the back as opposed to an all fabric strap.I have had my first bag for more than five years and it still looks and functions perfectly. I look forward to having both for my lifetime actually!! I believe they will probably last that long.

We saw this bag when we visited the store in ME months ago. My partner has been looking for one like it but never found it. I gave it to him as a Birthday gift and he LOVES it.It is easy to get in and out of and stores all his books and papers.

It's a nice bag but looks like a purse. I just can't justify using this it looks so feminine. Back it goes...

Rated 2 out of 5 Nice but flawed
The latch comes undone regularly. While its a nice piece of workmanship, the ease with which the flat becomes unbuckled is both bothersome and risky.

I am a teacher, and I purchased this bag before the beginning of the last school year to replace an older L.L. Bean canvas bag. After having used this everyday for over a year, it still looks great. Any scratches seem to disappear with a little saddle soap and if there are any as time goes on, it just adds to the character of the bag. I use this mostly to carry student work and text books with the occasional lap top. It seems to be "just right," not too big or too small. It goes great when dressing up or jeans and sneakers, but I've also used it for a day trip to NYC, and it had room for all the essentials. Everyone comments about what a nice looking bag it is, and I am totally satisfied with this purchase.
