Rated 5 out of 5 by LosAngelesChivas Very Stylish and Well Made. Order One Size Up.
Received the Black Coat yesterday. I normally wear Medium but ordered a Large based on other comments. Fits great. I have broad shoulders and arms and this fit well. If you have big arms and shoulders, definitely order a size up. It is not for extreme cold temperatures. It's for a casual evening or semi-formal outing.
The style is unique which is a reason I ordered it. Will now have to wait for temperatures to drop to wear. Such is the life of ordering winter clothes in non winter seasons to save many bucks.

Wow. This is one sharp looking black coat.
But, I would caution you to order up in size though as the XL here feels tight across my shoulders, so I am unlikely to be able to wear it with a sweater.

I wear a 44 R in all things Bean, but this jacket was tight in the shoulders and chest. The L was too snug for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Prionnsias Stylish and function moderate weather jacket.
This is a very nicely made stylish and functional jacket. The inclusion of a button in wool vest that can be worn as a stand-alone garment in its own right lends great adaptability to this garment - three coats for the price of one. Five stars because of this. The vest alone has four pockets, two inside, tow out. The outer coat has five. I bought the black at a deep discount and am well pleased with it. I would not have been as pleased or indeed bought it at the full price. I love the black which is slimming and stylish. Personally I am not too fond of the khaki. This is a moderate weather garment. It is not a coat for the deep freeze as the sleeves are not insulated. It is water resistant - not waterproof. Mine leaks at the right shoulder seam area in heavy rain, not terribly but some and lot less that some more expensive "waterproof" wax cotton coats I owned and sold on. Good for showers and cool Spring/Autumn weather.

I returned this coat because it had NO lining in the arms and would be too difficult to clean. It is a very attractive coat, but without lining this coat actually offers no warmth. To be honest, I was very disappointed because I really liked the look of this coat. I have since purchased the Bean original field jacket. I loved my original, which I owned for 18 years, so I will brave the cold with a new original.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JayTeeKay I found it true to size? unfortunately.
This review is based on what has been said about sizing here and thought it was worthwhile to add my input. I ordered a large since many were saying this style runs small. I am 6'2", about 170 and would have normally ordered a medium. It turns out I am returning my large and hoping to find a medium somewhere as it is out of stock on here.
I found the large to fit just how I would have expected a large to fit me. While I believe this style is a slimmer design, the size seems very accurate to me.

I wrote a review just the other day about this coat and said that there were several things to note on sizing, but overall I thought it was fine and despite the lack of a full body warm layer/lining it would be fine for DC winters. I was wrong.
The temps dropped early this year and anything below 45 or with a stiff breeze and the coat is cold.
It lacks not only warm lining of any kind, it lacks even basic nylon lining and when the waxed cotton touches your shirt sleeves, it transfers the cold to your arm.
I really, really wanted this coat to work, but sadly, it was returned today.
Dear LL Bean. if you turn the wool vest into a full body removable lining and put even basic nylon lining on the inside (including down the sleeves) I think you would have the perfect coat. But for $225, it's not worth being cold... Great look, just not warm enough.

I took my time deciding to purchase this coat b/c I wasn't sure about it based on previous reviews. It just arrived so let me say this based on my experience so far and some of the other things noted before me:
-The coat has good lines and a good feel to it. I ordered the Loden as it goes with a variety of other clothes/shoes. Classy appearance and clean fit. I like the wax feel to the outer coat.
-Yes, it does run small/straight, so unless you are a very thin build, I say order a size up. I am 5' 10", 220 lbs, with a 45 inch chest, and am glad I got the XL. It fits.
-A light sweater will go underneath, but no, this isn't going to be a coat for 20 below.
-I too wish the vest attached at the point of the armhole. Not annoying it doesn't, but would have been nice. That's one reason I give it 4 stars.
-The other reason I give it 4 stars is that I wish the vest was more of a full torso lining and went down the arms. Personal preference. But for DC winters, it should be fine. Northern locations will likely require something heartier for when it really gets cold as I mentioned earlier. Then again, that is usually the case.
-I haven't gotten it dirty, but I did order the Loden and can see why people would say order a darker color if you can't machine wash or dry clean it.
-Overall the coat is stylish and I think will be a good addition to my wardrobe. I wouldn't recommend you literally take it to the field (more for urban/around town wear), but I think it will do what I need it to when the weather turns colder here. I have only worn it twice, but so far I recommend. Will update if that changes.

Great look and I've been putting it through the paces with it holding up very well. Nice having the removable vest when needed on cooler days. Only fault mentionable is wish it was a tad roomier in the shoulders but only notice this when putting it on. Doesn't seem to be an issue once I'm underway.

This jacket is very much what I expected; L fits a 6'2" 190lb guy just right. Pockets are a bit out of touch for today (great to throw a small duck into) but style is excellent and makes a great outdoor/car coat. Inside vest is detachable and smartly hooks into the shell. I strongly recommend the green as the tan seems to attract dirt and the black, with it's contrasting stitching, demands you be a real lumberjack to make it look good. All in all, a great throwback and it reminds me of something my grandfather would have worn to go duck hunting.
