Rated 2 out of 5 by Meighn Too large
I really like the look of this jacket. Others have said they don't care for the material (too stiff) or shoulders, but I like them just fine. However, this is the first online purchase I will have to return. I really wish I would have read the reviews first because, as others have mentioned, the waist is comically large. I am 6'2 180lbs and ordered a large, and I could literally fit another one of me in this jacket. It would need around 6 inches taken in to fit how I would like it, and even then I would have room for a sweater and full coat underneath. I really do like the look, and if you are a bit bigger and order a size small you could probably make it work, but I look like someone shrunk me down 50% and put me in the jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MIJOE Best coat I ever returned.
Biggest pro. Good size collar that was the right amount of stiff. Good for blocking wind. Then lay down nice and not look oversized. I may never find a wool coat of that quality again at the current sale price. I ordered an xxl. While oversized, it allowed for layering. Once zipped up, to much room by the neck. Ordered an xl. Neck was perfect, but did not allow for layering. Would be fine as an office coat to wear to work, but not long enough. Had both at the same time. Came down to the fact that I'm just between an xl and an xxl. Returned them both. Only con, the shoulders were a little big. But overall a 5 star coat, just not my fit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by LTopper Great coat, but proportion off
The coat feels great. It looks good. I wear a medium which is very comfortable in the shoulders. It feels like real quality and is heavy like you would expect from a thick wool jacket.
The proportions are off. It is too big in the mid-section. It is too big for someone who is fit. I am very stocky. I am built like a barrel. I am not fat. If I had a big belly, this coat would be very accommodating.
It zips great and covers me up to my chin which is great on a cold day. This coat is warm for cold days, but probably not for bitter cold days where you are outside for a long time.
Despite the size issue, I really like the jacket and at the deeply discounted price, it is quite a reasonable deal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by RandyGA Nice to find a made in the USA coat
Pretty overpriced at the regular price. OK for the sale price. The overall construction is good, not great. On mine one of the shoulders is sewn on the slightest bit off just enough to be noticeable. The material is nice enough but is a little bit fuzzy. It looks like felt. Id prefer a smoother finish. I wish this had a bit of added insulation instead of the liner. It blocks the wind but is not warm enough for real cold weather. I wish it had adjustable cuffs. The opening near the wrists are huge and let in air. The lining is OK but is made of acetate which hold no heat and feels cool all the time. The shoulder pads are fine to me. It sort of gives it a military feel which may not suit everyone. It has a nice heavy zipper I have not had trouble with. The pockets are good. I'm not sure why one inside pocket is super small and the other big. I'd like two big zip pockets. Overall if you can pick this up on sale it is a good buy. You are paying more for made in the USA. I do not think that necessarily means that the quality is better, but it is still nice to find made in America clothing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by crambeast A steal at the sale price!
I've been wanting a wool jacket for a while, something simple that could be dressed up a little. This jacket fit the bill perfectly. I'm not too experienced with wool so I thought the jacket felt too light to be warm, but when I wore it outside in the 32 degree morning air, it kept me very warm indeed.
I've also been a little leery about LL Bean's shirts and jackets because, for the last few years, the sizing has been getting baggier and baggier until most of them look like I'm wearing a garbage bag (and I'm not a slender guy by any means!). So, I was pleasantly surprised with the sizing of the Authentic Wool Jacket. I'm a 46 long, and the Large/Tall size fits me perfectly - it's certainly roomy enough for layering but doesn't look baggy and billowy when I'm not layering. And I'm also not sure why so many people take issue with the shoulder pads. I think they add just a touch of rigidness to the shoulders for a bit of extra class. I suppose they could be an issue if your shoulders are substantially narrower than the jacket's shoulders, but I like it how it is.
The inner pockets are pretty great, too. The one on the left side looked kind of small to me but was actually wide enough to hold my big ol' Galaxy S5 phone, so good enough for me! Could be a little deeper, though, but that's just a nitpick.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Acemoose LOOVE this coat!!
Tried on the Large and it fit me perfectly. However it was grey and I wanted the blue and they are...OUT of blue n my size. I doubt this will keep me warm if I wear it outside on a blustery Winter (or late Fall) day -- but it has STYLE and it fits very nicely and I have patience and so will wait for the blue to be back in stock.

Rated 1 out of 5 by LLBeanFan175 Oversized quality
This coat is great quality but I ordered a large tall (I wear a 44 long) and the coat is huge! Their Large is equivalent to an XL or XXL. Have to return it. Disappointing from a quality brand like this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RDSAV Great coat
This is high quality, American made coat. Heavy duty zipper, nice lining, real wool. Versatile enough to wear as a casual coat or even over a suit. Will probably wear this for 20 years. It maybe runs a little big, but that allows room for layering. Only flaw is, as others have noted, the shoulder pads weren't for me. Had my tailor remove them and now it is perfect. Rated it 5 stars anyway because of its superb materials and construction.

Rated 3 out of 5 by br3tt A nice jacket, but not for me.
It was really the shoulders that did this jacket in. They made it look more like a suit coat than the pictures had me believe. I returned it.
If "suit coat" what you're looking for, then by all means buy this jacket; the materials and construction are superb.
As far as comments stating that the collar is too big: the larger collar MAKES IT FUNCTIONAL. If you flip this collar up, your entire neck is shielded. I count this as a plus.

Rated 3 out of 5 by imabeanie Nice, but with drawbacks
Every person has a different metabolism when it comes to withstanding cold temperatures. Mine is not one that can stay warm in a winter jacket/coat lined only in satin, no matter the outer material. Such is the case with the Authentic Wool Jacket here.
It is well constructed of 80% melton wool and 10% nylon. It also has some heft to it, some would call it stiffness. It is lined in satin throughout. The collar is very generous. Its length, however, barely covers one's hips.
For me it is not a warm jacket, even with wearing a midweight layer, as suggested. Cold breezes easily slip under the jacket's bottom and sleeves. I wonder how LL Bean can assign a "Warmer / to -15 degree" rating to it.
The first time I wore it, on a 20-degree day, a friend I was visiting remarked that it didn't look like a very warm jacket. How perceptive. Maybe if you are a US Navy man, such a jacket is sufficient to keep you warm. I'm not and it didn't.
