Rated 4 out of 5 by Brucifer Sturdy, warm, comfortable
Finally! A coat that can handle a Maine winter that doesn't look butt-ugly. No annoying hood, no bulky liner, but very warm and comfortable. I wore this every day for 5 Maine winters and had to finally retire it to a "camp coat" as it got a bit stained and worn around the edges, but it still has many good years left. I expect to be wearing this for chores and such for another 20 years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Squishmaster0 To thick and ill fitting
I had such high expectations for this jacket and they were certainly not met. This thing was awfully thick - way too warm to wear in the bay area at any time of year. And the sleeves were too long (and I have 36-37" arms). The fit was also slimmer than I would have liked - much slimmer than the description implied. All around, I would say this jacket MIGHT be decent as a work jacket in the northeast or midwest, but it is worthless in my weather and it looks awful with all that padding to boot.

I find the Katahdin Iron Works clothes line to be very functional, durable and comfortable- a rare combination. This jacket did not disappoint. Looks nice, has lots of pockets, is lined/warm and will stand up to normal wear and tear. Perfect for business travel on airplanes, subways, etc.

All i can say about this jacket is that you can feel the quality when you put it on! Great look and feel. The jacket is surprisingly soft despite it looking like it may have more of a canvas feel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mackeroni Great Fall Jacket
Have been wearing my Bean Katahdin jacket for a few weeks now. This is a great Fall jacket. Perfect weight for temps down into the 30's.
The fit is just the way I like it. The sleeves are long enough to be comfortable when driving. The extra gussets under the arms and in the back allow for true freedom of movement in spite of the fitted appearance. Others have commented on the smallish zipper, but I have no trouble. It hooks right up and moves smoothly with no problems. So comfortable, I might have to buy the olive color too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by RRCon great looking, well made, bad fit.
I'm 6'1" 195 lbs, normally order a medium tall, however this item only comes S, M, L, XL. I ordered the large and was disappointed to find the fit lacking. It was way to big in the body while the sleeves were the correct length (which tells me if I ordered a medium the sleeves would be short). Not made for the slender guy, if you're bigger in the middle go for it. It's a great looking well made jacket, just not going to work for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by kingfish This is a well made jacket
I purchased one for a co-worker and liked it so much I bought one for me. The extra length tail is a nice feature when stooping over. Fabric & construction is soft and triple stitched in stress areas. Previous posters commented the zipper was too small and the inside pocket would not accommodate the smart phones. Both issues have been corrected. My co-worker wears a L and I wear an XL - in both cases the sleeves are two inches too long. I am having the sleeves shortened 2 inches to fit properly. I have a 34" sleeve length. Don't buy it unless you have long arms or willing to invest another $20 to have the sleeves altered. LL Bean really needs to address the sleeve lengths to make this a 5 star product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tomsreview MY NEW COAT
On my first visit to the state of Main made a point of visiting L L Bean store in Freeport where I discovered this coat. I like the rugged appearance of the coat, the exterior canvas feel and the warmth provided by the interior lining. It appears to be well made. Although I haven't actually worn the coat in extremely cold weather, it will most likely provide ample protection from the elements given the fact that it will accommodate a sweater underneath. I have worn it in light rain and found that the canvas exterior tends to shed water to a great degree. I am 6 feet tall and weigh 180 pounds. The XL size is an ample fit for me.

Jacket insulation was bulkier than expected. Great inside/inside pockets & inside/outside pockets. But I was expecting something on the 'bulkiness level' of a lined jean jacket for fall & spring. This is more like a winter coat.
Also front zipper is too small for such a big jacket.
If you don't mind fiddling with 'a dinky zipper' as you're on the way out the door... this coat would work great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BillysFather Excellent jacket with two very minor issues
This is my third Katahdin Iron Works garment - I also own a shirt and vest. The style and quality of this jacket is just exactly what I wanted. It is very well made and has a traditional, old-fashioned look that I prefer over most of today's nylon and polyester apparel. I have two small complaints: the zipper is a bit difficult to get started, and the sleeves are about a half inch too long. Neither of these small issues is enough to make me return the item, as I really like the jacket overall. If you have shorter than average arms you may find the extra long sleeves unacceptable. I have shopped at Mr Bean's store for more than 30 years, and I have been completely satisfied with at least 90 percent of my purchases.
