Rated 5 out of 5 by NSbirder An Investment
I purchased this jacket (red with blue lining) 2 years ago and look forward to wearing it every year. Winter birding involves standing still a lot and this jacket is the best investment ever made for comfort. I often get compliments on the pop of colour it gives! Inside pocket adequate for a field guide. Goes from uptown to forest floor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Maveric09 Stylish, functional jacket true to form
Just returned from Iceland where this down jacket was broken in. It is very packable, very warm and very versatile. It managed to hold up during mist and light drizzle, but its water resistance was not able to withstand continuous drizzle/light rain. I was impressed nonetheless. My only complaint is that the sleeves are little too long for a size Large.

by longtrailshiker Selectively Versatile - backpacking & town use
I wrote a 2013 review & now have more experience with it. I'm 6', 170 lb & bought a M tall. The extra length is beneficial, especially when sitting in a frigid campsite or tent.
Purchased primarily for backpacking, it's become a go-to garment during winter around town (northern IL) when a heavy shell is insufficient & down parka is an overkill. Wet snowfall isn't a concern.
I don't wear down garments while carrying a backpack (except at -10F or below), but have while hiking w/ a daypack. Down compression & sweat are concerns. This jacket has performed to my standards when carrying a daypack & humping along trails when the temp is near and below freezing.
At camp on backpacking trips, the number of int & ext pockets are very helpful. When misty, foggy, very light rain, or wet snow, I don't shy away from being outside (knowing that I can wear the jacket in the tent & allow body heat to help dry it). Nice, snug collar when zipped. Headed to the Smokies for T-giving week 2015 - this jacket is my alternative to carrying a fleece or other insulating garment. Long underwear, Ultralight 850 jacket, & lightweight shell keeps me toasty & dry at camp in cold rain or wind & temps in the 20s. The new Pertex outer fabric appears to be an improvement over my version.
Should you wear this bushwhacking? No, the outer fabric doesn't have high abrasive resistance - less than average in my estimation. Buyers...use common sense and ask yourself, for what purposes are you purchasing an 850 fill, water repellent down, lightweight jacket for? I hope your answers tilt toward utility rather than fashion.

I wore my Ultralight 850 jacket to Pike's Peak yesterday and found it very light and warm in pretty brisk wind. There were ample pockets at the hand level for a knit hat and gloves. There also was a zipper pocket on the outside to hold my iPhone. I think this is a definite winner. I plan to take it to Switzerland in December, too. (If anything, the zipper might be improved by being able to unzip a bit from the bottom.)

This is the 2nd Ultralight 850 Down Jacket I have purchased. I bought a navy blue 2 years ago and still wear it. Recently bought a black model. Very warm and very light. Is excellent to take on airplane when traveling as does not take up much space.

I've been looking for a light weight down jacket for a while and ran across this one. True to size. I worried it might rip, but wore it the entire season with no problems and it kept me waaaaaarm. It was great in the car too because it did not restrict my movement. I priced competitors for a while and nothing comes close to this price. A great buy.

I love my down jacket! Very light, packable for trips, and warm. Abundance of zippered pockets make it a wonderful travel necessity.

Rated 1 out of 5 by misrepresentation Poor fit!
I have ordered a man?s ultra light dawn coat for a gift. I was very happy to receive a package at time but, I was so disappointed when I opened it. It is a nice jacket but sleeves are almost 5 inches longer then it supposed to be according to LL Bean?s size chart. It is obvious misrepresentation.!
I have ordered size Large with sleeves measuring 34-35 inches and I got almost 40!!! In size chart even for tall man size XXL sleeves measurement is 38 inches. I was not able to exchange the item because it?s out of stack now. I had to return the coat and start to look for another gift. I am very disappointed and upset. It was my first experience with LL Bean and definitely the last one.
