I purchased my first sweater jacket two years ago, and liked it so much, that I purchased a second. I use it for around town wear on its own in temps from 20 to 40. It is very comfortable and not bulky for driving. My favorite use is wearing it under a shell skiing at Sugarloaf with wind chills down to minus 20. I use it with a base layer, a wind-shirt and the shell, and I am very warm. The zippered chest pocket sets it aside from some of the competition. I enjoy a roomy fit, and at 5' 8" 190 lbs, the extra large works well. I keep a L L Bean sweater jacket and a Gore-Tex shell in the back of my SUV year round ready for any conditions.

I bought the Ultralight 850 Down Sweater for an upcoming vacation in Europe where light and compact packing will be the watchword. This jacket (it's a jacket, not really a sweater) does not disappoint. It's light as a feather and build quality is superb. Large pockets nicely placed. Perfect for my needs, even if I wasn't traveling. In just a week I have had many unsolicited compliments. Another plus -- Bean's fast delivery.

I wear the Ultralight 850 by itself and under a water- and wind-proof shell depending on the weather. It is amazingly warm considering its weight (almost nothing)! The fit is trim but I can comfortably wear it over a shirt and sweater. The construction appears to be very good - although I've only worn it for one season, so we'll see how it wears in the future. The map/cell phone pocket is really helpful as is the option to store it without taking up much space.I'm very pleased with this product and would highly recommend it.

With respect to the sweater?s ability to keep the down clusters and feathers inside the garment, where it belongs, this year?s ultralight 850 down jacket is miles ahead of the 2013 model that I owned and quickly returned. My 2013 model had a very unacceptable amount of down and feathers leaking through its shell and seams. I returned it a short time afterwards and bought myself the 850 jacket in December 2016 for myself and one for my wife and the 850 down sweater for my brother for Christmas. These newer models are superior to the 2013 models, due to the newer models? liner and shell being made of Pertex Quantum, which claims to be downproof, and to their models? much tighter stitching.
Although the down in our new jackets do leak from both the seams and the shell (almost exclusively from the seams) the amount is very acceptable and in-line with the best of the competition. In the relatively rare accounts of the jacket and sweater leaking down or a feather, I pull it back in from the opposite side of the jacket - doing this has prevented more down from escaping from the same vulnerable spot.
The sweater is amazingly light, with the right amount of down loft for a sweater. I think that it should keep most people comfortable in temps as low as somewhere between 35 and 40 degrees. Due to it being super light-weight and relatively think, it is great for serving as mid-layer. I think that this sweater is so versatile that it can easily be worn 8 months out of the year in the northeast.
The sleeves on the sweater are better than those on the jacket, as the sweater hugs more closely to the wrists. Both the jacket and the sweater have the great feature of a drawcord at the hem, which is great for sealing in the warmth. Much of the competition do not have this.
The only negative that I have found is that the down shifting on the arms. The down sweater and jacket are bound to have some cold spots. My 850 down jacket has one right now. My brother?s down sweater will eventually have one. The reason that this happens is that the baffles are too large in the arms. These garments should have more than just one vertical seam. I will fix my cold spot by placing my garment in the dryer for about 15 minutes with a wet towel and a few tennis balls.
The fit for the sweater is a little slimmer than the jacket, as it should. I think that athletic types and slim types should choose their usual size, but folks like my brother and I, who are not slim or athletic by any stretch of the imagination, have no choice but to order a size up.
Overall, my brother is very happy with his down sweater. I intend to buy myself one next year, at which time, I am hoping that the sleeves will have more baffles so that the likelihood of cold spots will be greatly reduced.

I received the Ultralight 850 Down Sweater for Christmas and now have purchased one for my husband. They'll be perfect for our European bike/barge trip next fall. We both picked the red color for visibility and the light weight down will provide warmth without taking up all the space in our suitcases. The Down Sweater actually stuffs into its own pocket! While the 850 down sweaters are expensive, they will serve us well on all our adventures. I generally wear a misses 12 and the woman's "large regular" fit me perfectly. The XL Tall fits my 6'4" husband and his 37" long arms.

The 850 down sweater is a terrific product and perfect for the Pacific Northwest. I liked it so much that I bought a 2nd one in a different color. They are expensive but well worth it.

Got 2 jackets for my hubby and son. We are in sunny Calif so didn't get to wear this jacket a lot without feeling too hot. But when we do get those "cold" days, the jacket kept them warm without the weight. Another good buy from LLBean!

Not often do I have to return product to LLBean. However, the armholes on this "sweater" are too small. I had anticipated using this as a layering, or outer garment when active. The smaller armhole issue was definitely a no go. Unfortunately, had to return, but would purchase again if that issue is corrected.

I ordered an XXL expecting space for a fleece underneath and it was extremely tight in the shoulders to the point I could barely get the sweater on.

ORDER UP ON SIZE, sent medium back and a few days later large arrived. Great customer service.
Used in XC ski trip and was impressed with wind resistance and warmth. Base was just a wick away t shirt and was very comfortable. Very light and new size is great. Would like to have Velcro cuff adjustments to custom fit wrist. Great for walks in cool evening and waiting to try in really cold conditions.
