This year's model makes changes, and I don't like any of them. Two snaps at the neck become one snap. (I used two snaps to keep my neck warm while hiking with jacket open.) Two interior mesh pockets are now just one on the right side. I used to carry a camera lens in each for good weight distribution, or keep gloves in each so the gloves are inside the jacket to keep warm when you need the heavy outer gloves. Two exterior upper pockets are gone. I used those for headlamps or micro-spikes, so I could use the bottom two for my hands, but keep the upper ones zipped up and secure. The outer upper left pocket near the zipper isn't as deep any more, but my big cell phone still fits.
The previous year's jacket I liked, even though the plastic zipper broke and the exterior fabric was starting to come undone under the arm and at the neck. Despite all this, the jacket is the warmest non-down jacket, and I still will use it on winter hikes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by EngineerByDay Waterproof until you wash it
Positives first - very warm and comfortable, I like the length (covers your butt, keeps the wind out), inside of the sleeves have a stretchy fabric which keeps the wind out without being a nuisance when taking the coat off, and a functional hood (stays on).
Negatives - zipper isn't great, and it's only waterproof until you wash it. I followed the care instructions and when the coat came out it doesn't bead up water at all. That said, I've never had a waterproof coat that has stayed that way for long, so this isn't an exception.
Bottom line - I'm keeping it because it's warm and comfortable but it's not going to function as rain coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Roundhouse2 Excellent Winter Jacket!
This jacket works as advertised in ALL kinds of winter weather! I received mine the day before the latest big Northeast snowstorm, and got put to work right away while shoveling the next three days. With a base and middle layer underneath, I was plenty warm in negative single digit wind chills. The coat was most impressive a few weeks later wearing it on a series of outdoor photo shoots over a week in snow, sleet, rain and wind - it kept me warm and dry the whole time. The adjustable hood is big enough to keep my camera eyepiece dry. Plenty of pockets for a phone, extra gloves & batteries, memory cards and a second lens. The storm cuffs in the sleeves and the longer cut of the coat help keep the cold and wet out.
I appreciate that LL Bean continues to carry Tall sizes!

Rated 5 out of 5 by maplescones Very warm and lightweight jacket.
My husband is 6' and about 165 lbs. with long arms. The size large fits him perfectly and leaves enough room to wear layers underneath. He appreciates how warm and lightweight this jacket is, and he is picky about clothes. One request: Please return to classic colors like navy, a dark spruce, and dark grey! My husband does not like the vivid colors for any of his clothes, but especially for his outerwear. Thank you for a great winter jacket!

During the recent below zero weather this jacket has proven to be a great purchase.
With just a turtleneck and button down this jacket performed well in 11degree below zero weather. I'm 6 feet and 175 lbs, a medium fits well with minimal layers needed to keep warm. Another winner from LL Bean.

I bought this jacket online for my husband since we weren't able to find a reasonably priced, warm jacket for him. We take walks almost every night and he comments on how warm this parka is just about every time. The jacket is nice looking, lightweight but keeps him very toasty warm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Verified Reviewer The perfect winter coat
I've searched 3 years for the perfect winter coat and finally found it here. I especially appreciate the removable hood because I don't use hoods or hats. Removable is better than roll-up because it doesn't create the bulk around your neck. I've read reviews here that say this coat is sized too large or too small, but I wear an XL and ordered an XL and it fits perfectly. I also dislike zip-out liners or "3-way" coats. This one is the classic one-piece, insulated, single zipper coat that is warm, comfortable and not too noisy considering the waterproof fabric it is made of. Also love the super-soft fleece collar and pocket linings. Top quality all around.

Rated 4 out of 5 by RLECC Nicely constructed, lightweight, but too long.
When I first picked up the package from the steps where FedEx had left it, I thought Beans must have made a mistake and sent a summer jacket. Very lighweight coat with great zippers. Excellent cord adjusters on the hood and waist. Though I prefer a permanently attached hood, this one protects well because it zips on instead of using snaps and velcro (worst coat idea ever). Lining does not grab clothing. Very warm. Standing in -10 weather for 15 minutes waiting for the bus was no problem.
I sent it back because the front pockets are so far down on the coat that I had to lift the coat up to reach the bottom of the pocket. The sleeves went halfway down my hand. Coat fit like a Tall even though it was marked Regular.

I am very pleased with this jacket. It is very comfortable and warm. I selected the color "Spruce/True Teal" and received many compliments on the coat's looks.
Although I found the hood somewhat large, I have not had any need to use the hood because it has been a snowless winter.
I am a very happy customer. The coat is what I wanted and has met my expectations for warmth and a comfortable fit.

I finally had a reasonable test of this coat today. It is 11 degrees F with a -3 F wind chill. I wore my standard LLB river driver shirt base layer, a LLB fleece-lined flannel and this coat. After about 3/4 mile walking with my dog, I was too warm and had to take off the hood and unzip the coat slightly. The last half mile was quite pleasant.
That is exactly what I wanted in my new coat.
