Rated 4 out of 5 by Rick8264 nice build quality, but fit is restricted
This jacket is fairly well made for it's price point. I have only one problem with it - it does not seem to have adequate gusseting or other features to allow full freedom of movement and it binds in the upper arm/shoulder area when trying to reach forward or upward. That also prevents wearing it with a sweater. It is not too bad while driving, but is not suitable for outdoor sports where freedom of arm movement is essential, such as riding, shooting or fly casting. This was surprising, as other Bean jackets like my original field coat in the same size have plenty of room to move as needed.
It is fine as a casual town jacket, but not well suited to "field" use, which the name implies. I can recommend it with that reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ChaplainFolkGuitar Great coat for Central florida Winters!
This is a great coat for north-central Florida winters.
I am a hospital Palliative Care (Hospice) chaplain in the Tampa Bay Area. I am often called out in the middle of the night to minister to our dying patients. Sometimes the evening / early morning winters in the Tampa bay Area can be from low 30's-low 50's with a howling wind and damp weather light rain. this Jacket will work perfectly for me. I purchased the town and field coat about 5 years ago and it is much heavier and bulky. it is good for below 40 degrees but is somewhat stiff. this new improved version is much lighter, it has nicer fabric and details including both snaps and a zipper. the fabric is a considerable upgrade. I was looking by comparison at a famous brand from England which cost twice as much and this coat seems to be just as nice for half the price. there is ample room for a sweater vest or lightweight sweater underneath for layering if needed. this is a very sporty, almost, dressy but very rugged jacket-and will be perfect for those who wish something rugged, distinguished, and warm -and yet not bulky and can wear it from low 30s-low to 60's
I have dealt with L. L. bean for almost 10 years and their products and customer service is outstanding. I cant wait to wear this coat1..Perfect for professors, chaplains, scholars, outdoorsmen, and folks who want something both rugged and dressy. .I am also a Folk guitarist playing Peter Paul and Mary and John Denver Music and this goes with the look that I like.

Rated 4 out of 5 by MrMinnesota Great quality, trditional fit, runs large
This coat is of amazing quality and is a good mid to late autumn jacket. However, it is a traditional fit so you may find that it runs larger than you would like. I had that issue and had to exchange it for a smaller size.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Nickname99 Not a barbour....
The title says it all. I was hoping for a poor mans (with long arms) Barbour this wasn't it.
The fabric is good and the overall construction is fine. The tall sizing worked for me too. I am 6' 2" usually 44 L, 17/37 shirts, the Large/Tall fit me trimly- not much room for layering, fine over a shirt or light sweater.
My issues... skimpy zipper, only partially lined with cotton, and, the deal breaker was the vestigal pockets, upper handwarmers too high and too small to use, the lowers too small as well.
This would probably be ok for wearing around town town for a season or two...
I sent mine back and will bite the bullet and get a Barbour.

Rated 2 out of 5 by dwa1 too short
Even when I ordered the tall, I found this otherwise fine coat to be extremely short.

Rated 4 out of 5 by myjoecalledlife I'm not sure I'm sold yet...
I've this coat a few wears- mostly right now on the drive to work on chilly mornings. Quality feels good- sleeves are a little long, love the color and the added bonus of waxed cotton, such a beautiful thing. One big downside for me is the size of the pockets, especially those on the upper chest, they feel small and other than putting my hands in them I can't imagine them safely holding much more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LLBeanEverything Great Jacket
I'm really excited to see LL Bean offer a jacket like this. I live in North Carolina and purchased this jacket to use for "light duty" winter sporting (shooting/hunting) activities. Winters in the Carolinas are fairly mild with daytime temps. in the 30's to low 50's. So, I'm hoping that this piece will be a longtime and favorite staple for sporting activities here. The construction of this jacket is very nice. The waxed cotton has a nice hand but still feels strong enough to withstand limbs and thorns. The cotton flannel lining, I think, is very well done considering my geographic locale. It seems worm enough to knock off the chill but not too worm that you couldn't wear a sweater underneath on a colder day. The light weight cotton lining produces a fit that is not bulky or cumbersome, and, in my opinion, offers good flexibility and range of motion for any type of wear. The burnished brass hardware feels high quality also; the zipper functions smoothly and the buttons are not aggravating to snap or unsnap. The soft corduroy appointments on the collar, undersides of the cuff and pocket flaps produce a nice finished look to the overall construction of this jacket. The loden color combined with all other aspects of this piece, in my opinion, produces a look which captures the classic function and heritage of waxed cotton field sport jackets. The only change I might suggest is a double zipper to offer a more custom fit around the bottom of the jacket. The price point compared to the quality of this piece is outstanding. If I can, I will write a follow-up review at the end of hunting season. I'm excited about this jacket and look forward putting it to the test!
