My 6 year old son is very happy with it. It is not too big nor too little for him. I can see him use it for the next 3 - 4 years.

I got Butterfly Orchid for my Kindergartner and she loves the pattern and I love the quality(- which is hard to find these days). It is very roomy, she can take her matching lunch box in that. I felt this is bigger size for her age but I couldnt find any one that has side pocket for water bottle in smaller sizes. I am ok with that. She will grow into this.

My 1st grader took his Jr. backpack through to the beginning of 3rd grade without a scratch so when we needed a bigger, but not too big, size we came straight back to LLBean. We are happily expecting a long life from this new backpack as well.

Extremely well made back pack that is also cool looking for my grandson's first day of kindergarten!
He spilled some berries in the side pocket & they rinsed right out.
Love that it's waterproof and has a reflective safety stripe.
Quick shipping...even with getting a monogram done.

This is my second Discovery backpack and I can tell you that I didn't even bother looking anywhere else for backpacks. My kids all have the same backpacks they bought in the first grade when I discovered LL Bean backpacks. The backpacks still look new and have no problems at all. This year I picked up the lunch boxes to match the backpacks and I hope they do just as well the backpacks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by bikegal00 Great backpack!
The backpack arrived today for my kindergartener. He's little under 4 ft. and it looks huge on him. Standing from behind, you are not able to see my child's backside when he has the pack on. It is definitely a backpack he will be growing into and last well into his 2nd grade year.
The quality is excellent as expected. All the zippers have a rubber band like extension looped on, so you are not tugging directly on the zipper. The pencil/card compartment is so spacious with a carabiner to hold keys. The main compartment has more then plenty room to hold a kindergartener's daily load consisting of a lunch pack, homework folder, and jacket, with ample room for more books. The 2 bottle holder pockets on the sides are tall enough to hold a Thermos full size water bottle w/o fear it will slip out whenever your child bends down to tie his shoe like some packs I've tried on. The handle on top where the backpack is to hang on school hooks, is made of thick material that look like it will hold up to the constant strain on hanging on school hooks.
Since he's still small, the shoulder straps are very wide and big across his shoulders. He hasn't complained and they haven't slipped off as he walks around with the pack on.
I wished it came with a clip across the chest to prevent the shoulder straps from slipping off the shoulders once the pack gets heavier. Also I wished it had a hip strap for additional support. That is the reason I gave it a 4.
Otherwise, this backpack delivered on what it promised. We can't wait to see how it holds up through the early elementary school years!

Rated 4 out of 5 by BluegrassYankee Attractive, sturdy, functional book bag
I have had an LLBean backpack for a couple of decades and it has held up college, grad school, occasional travel & hikes. We needed a 5th- grade pack for daughter, The Discovery is larger than absolutely necessary, but wearable; curved, padded straps help (when worn on both shoulders) but they connect too close together at the top of the pack to be completely comfortable. We lengthened the straps, as her load is not heavy, and the straps fit better. A sternum strap might help. The long straps at the waist are not necessary for her height as the pack is long for her, (especially with the shoulder straps slightly lengthened). We rolled up the waist straps and secured them with a rubber band so they don't catch in the bus seat door. The buckle-less waist straps could be tied together to help support heavy loads, if the shoulder straps fit, but I think this pack - full - could probably hold more books than should be carried on a middle schooler's back.
Butterfly print is pretty (dolphins and sharks were all gone). Daughter loves the glow-in-the-dark feature and I'm happy there is reflective trim. But Discovery pack lacks the large reflective panel of the "Bookpacks." On the plus side, it has 2 water bottle holders that the Origianals lack.
The little pocket in the front is longer than I'd anticipated. It is as wide as the zipper but extends to the bottom of the pack.
The second (thin) compartment has an organizer pocket/ pencil holder/ zippered sections for "stuff" and includes a strap with a clip for keys. (Check "other views" on the LLBean site.) The organizer pocket is in front of -and attaches to -a deeper pocket section (approx. 7" x 8" deep) This pocket can close with a strong "hook & loop" velcro to the backside of the organizer panel.
The large compartment easily holds a binder, notebooks and school books. (Again, see Bean site video.) In the back of the large section is a pocket to slide in a small laptop or tablet. It is only nylon and not padded (except at back), not suspended nor protected from other things in the large compartment, but adequate for occasional transportation of bigger devices. This is designed as a school pack, but would work as a day pack, if not full.
The pack could be improved with better placement of the shoulder straps, a sternum strap & buckle, a stiffer separator for the device sleeve, more reflective material, and (perhaps) reinforced bottom (although my old bag has lasted 20+ years).
Generally, great pack and good price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by back2schoolcool Best backpack if it was wider at the top
The LLBean backpacks are hands down the best for durability. This one is no exception and has a lot of great pockets and compartments for organizing things. The only tiny issue is that it's just slightly too narrow at the top to fit a 1-inch binder into the sleeve closest to the back. It's great when the binder and lunchbox can be kept separate, but in this pack they share the large compartment. Not a deal breaker. It's smaller than some of the other LLBean school backpacks (which is great for a tiny kindergartener), but we will probably have to upgrade to a larger pack in a year or two when he has to carry bigger binders to and from school.
