I bought this jacket for my wife a few months ago. The ultralight 850 down jacket belongs in the ?packable down jacket? category, and as such, the jacket is not expected to be a stand-alone in temperatures below 25 or 30 degrees, depending on mid-layer and activity level. Therefore, this jacket?s warmth is not competing against the likes of the Baxter State Parka or the Wind Challenger Down jacket. Packable down jackets are designed to be extremely light, packable, and work well with activities like hiking, backpacking, and camping. They are also liked by city folks like my wife who wants to wear a jacket comfortable enough in temps above 30 without the bulk. The jacket can also be great to wear under a parka, in temps below zero. The jacket is stylish, and looks very nice on her.
Although the down in my wife?s jacket do leak from both the seams and the shell (almost exclusively from the seams) the amount is acceptable and in-line with the best of the competition. I believe that this is due to the Jacket?s Pertex Quantum shell and liner and due to tight stitching. When I see down coming out of the jacket, I pull it back in from the opposite side of the jacket - doing this has prevented more down from escaping from the same vulnerable spot.
The ?packable down jacket? category faces fierce competition, and L.L. Bean does very well in it, especially considering its price. The jacket is super light, stuffed with very high quality down with the right amount of it ? not too little, not too much. The down is treated so that if it gets wet, it will do a much better job of staying lofty than down that are not treated. The back of the jacket is longer than the front, which is nice. The hem has a pull cord to tighten the bottom of the jacket, which is an excellent feature, as it does a great job of helping to prevent the warmth from escaping and the cold from entering. The zippers have worked flawlessly
The end of the sleeves do not hug my wife?s wrists closely enough, and this slightly reduces the warmth of the jacket, unless she wears gloves to cover the gaps.
Overall, my wife is very happy with the L.L. Bean ultralight 850 down jack. It is effective in keeping her comfortable in temps 30 and above with no mid-layer, and it has a flattering look to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by heliskimom Change in quality
I have 3 of these jackets, each bought at a different time and each one different from the other 2. The newest version, bought in the fall 2015 is disappointing because it has much less down in it than in the others and also no longer has the microfiber lining around the neck.
This is not the first time that I've been disappointed by an unanticipated and non-disclosed change in an LL Bean product which has resulted in a lower quality item.

Ordered this coat in Brilliant Blue. While I love the color I am only keeping it for warmer weather! This coat is definitely not for -25 weather! How do I know? It has a test at -8 with a windchill of -25!! Yes I live in northern Wisconsin and I tried it yesterday with layers and I was COLD!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by pacificNWlady Perfect jacket....EXCEPT
I received this as a Christmas present and it is amazing...how can I be so warm wearing it outside, yet not be overly warm wearing it in a store? Perfect fit as a large regular - I am 5'4" and 140 lbs - and allows me to wear another warm layer under it, if needed.
BUT feathers started coming out after only 1 week. I made the mistake of pulling one out and a whole bunch came with it. I ended up using a round toothpick to carefully push them back in and closed the hole with a tiny dot of clear glue. A major hassle! More feathers are coming out, as well.
For an expensive jacket like this, I expect much better of the outer material in keeping feathers in. I hope LL Bean, one of my favorite places to order from, takes this issue on right away. I would love to have another one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by qwe456 beautiful but not warm
I ordered the brilliant blue jacket. The color is beautiful. Fit is nice. Good if it's 50 degrees or warmer. I have to wear this layered under another coat, with long underwear and a wool sweater. And still not warm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Flipperfeet16 Good jacket with a small design flaw
I like the jacket but when zipping it up; fabric sometimes gets caught in the zipper. It's frustrating but I can usually work it out. Today, I was doing my usual finagling to get the fabric out of the zipper but this time the teeth of the zipper broke. LL BEAN quickly arranged a QUICK EXCHANGE but hope they can take a look at this small but annoying flaw.

I bought this in the Ruby/coral, and the color actually sold the jacket. I also love that it is so light weight. What I don't love is a $200 jacket with dark down spots all over it. Not sure I can live with that. I was looking for something to wear on the "in between" days. My down jacket would keep me warm at the North pole, so given our mild winter; I need something else to take me through spring. Also, what happened to sizing? I am a small to medium, but all of a sudden they don't fit in the shoulders anymore. I bought a large to get a comfortable fit, but now it is big everywhere else. Not sure if this is a keeper yet! Really expect more from LL Bean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Princepuppy Lovely Jacket
I gave this jacket only 4 stars due to the fact it is not as warm as advertised. It's warm at 30 degrees but when it drops to 18 even an added fleece doesn't help that much. Was walking my dog the first time it was worn and it started to pour yet I stayed dry. I am pleased at how waterproof it is. It is a lovely jacket that I highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lowertech A very nice addition to my outerwear wardrobe!
This down "sweater" is unusual, in that it does not pretend to be a jacket: it does not have cuffs, but has siightly fitted bands at the wrists. It is thin and very light-weight, but immediately adds a layer, creating warmth without bulk. It has 3 zippered external pockets and one large zippered pocket inside, which is handy, and which might work to compress the sweater for travel in a duffle or daypack. It zips up the front into a turtleneck closure, providing good protection for the throat. The material is sleek and a little shiny, but not objectionably so. I agree with a prior review, the logos are just on the very edge of too much, being light grey on the sweater I chose, which is black. The style is attractive enough to be worn as the top layer if the logos don't bother you. All in all I like it very much, and I am sure I will get more than my money's worth from this affordable, highly practical and packable item!

This is the flimsiest excuse for a "warm" jacket I've ever seen. I am a native New Englander, and expected something of substance for rated a good cold weather down jacket. This was like a thin layer that I'd have to put several other layers under to actually be warm. I will be returning it and looking elsewhere. Very disappointing for LL Bean.
