Rated 3 out of 5 by 6009 Nice but has issues
First of all, sized way too big. I am 5 ft 1 in muscular 125 lb and ordered the petite small, a full size too wide even with heavy layers underneath.
The cuffs are very stiff and are uncomfortable. I might have gotten used to this, but why should I have to deal with the discomfort? Other jackets don't have this issue.
Finally, the person who designed this parka obviously doesn't ski or ride. The exterior breast pocket which is the obvious place for the ski pass is on the same side as the interior secure pocket for the cell phone. As we all know, the cell phone interferes with the RFID register of the ski pass. So you cannot use the interior pocket for the cell phone. You would have to put it in the opposite breast interior pocket which is a big goggle pocket, not a big deal But it does not have a closure and if you bend down, there is a good possibility your phone will fall out. This is such a stupid oversight. For that matter, why not two exterior breast pockets? I got an $18 ski jacket from another retailer that has far far better pockets.
The only thing this jacket has that I really wanted was the two way zipper and it does have some very heavy duty insulation that I feel sure would be extremely warm. But the fitting and design features are inexcusable. Oh, and did I mention, there are no pit zips for ventilation if things warm up a little? What on earth is Bean thinking?

I have been wearing this coat for 2 winters now and still very much appreciate how very warm this coat is on very cold days. I'm glad I bought it! People fuss about the zipper- I found it's because I don't have it lined up right to shut it. Otherwise I've had no problems with my coat. I especially like the many pockets it has-Great idea- since I don't like to carry a purse!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Muinme Great coat EXCEPT....
This coat promised to be all I need for being outdoors in the Maine winter, BUT....I ordered the fuschia one and found the zipper difficult to work from the beginning and after a few weeks, it gave up the ghost. Wore it with just Velcro (snaps would be SO much better!) until a replacement came. The second one's zipper was also hinky, so I decided to try another color, the blue. This one's zipper is also weird, but in a different way, but I will keep it until it breaks. Has nobody else had this zipper problem with this coat??

The Rugged Ridge Parka is really toasty. It's roomy and the sleeves are long, so it should be perfect over lots of layers. Fashionable? No. Functional? Yes. The blues are as pictured.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Ontariodogwalker Almost Perfect
A week ago I might have given this jacket a five-star review. I love the colours - I ordered both the French blue and the dark fushia. Both are vibrant and the kind of cheery colours we need during a grey and dreary winter. It's a warm jacket with lots of large, roomy, useful pockets, which are perfect for dog-walkers like me, who often carry a lot of gear. The hood is a bit overlarge, but it will easily accommodate a hat when you just want to pull it up for added protection from the elements, and it is fully adjustable. The sleeves are long for me, but the velcro tabs make them adjustable so I can tighten them to fit. I agree with other reviewers that the use of velcro along the front closur, rather than snaps, is unfortunate, particularly at the neck where a snap is needed. The jacket is almost perfect, but unfortunately the workmanship is lacking. I have worn the blue jacket for the past two months almost constantly when outdoors and just noticed that the inner lining is already coming apart. This jacket is not being used for a lot of rigorous activity, mostly walking and shopping. It should be able to stand up this and a lot more. As for the colour, the blue jacket is a light royal, trimmed with indigo - a lovely combination. The pink version is magenta trimmed with dark red. Both are great jackets, but time will tell how well they last. I'm a bit disappointed - I expected better from LL Bean and from a jacket with "rugged" in the name.

I couldn't decide between this coat and the shorter more flattering ultralight down jacket (which I also loved). Now that we have -20 temperatures I am glad I chose this one! Went skiing last night and I was toasty! Plenty of room for layers, lots of pockets and room to zip up the chin area, and there is nice soft fabric for chin and face. No wind was getting through this thing. I am 5 ft tall, and shop petites but I ordered a medium to be sure I could layer under it. Only complaint- it may be TOO warm for normal winter days. If you like to be outdoors, comfort needs to take precedence!

Rated 5 out of 5 by LovnItInChgo Really warm and rugged, hence the name
I bought this coat in 2014, and I absolutely love it! The hood is wonderful, and adjustable. I have fat arms, and the arms are not too tight, and have the velcro tabs at the wrists to keep the wind out. The bottom of the coat is also adjustable, so you can keep the wind from going up the bottom of the coat. I have been commuting by train, and walking, and waiting for the bus and train, and boy do I love this very technical coat! the pockets are a nice size, I can jam big gloves and a hat in them. The coat is really warm. I were a size 14-16, and an XL is a little roomy, but I would not want it tight, as I don't want to look like a sausage. Thank you LLBean! I wish you would come out with a knee length version of this coat!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Nutkinknits Very warm without overheating
My husband bought this jacket for me in December as an early Christmas gift. I have been wearing it almost daily for about a month and a half. I have noticed that this coat is very comfortable and warm without being too warm. I can wear it inside for awhile without getting overheated. I have worn it in multiple weather conditions, temperatures from 45 degrees down to the teens, rainy and snowy, I have felt quite warm.
My previous winter coat was a 10 year old Columbia 3 in 1 ski jacket that was big and bulky feeling and I still had a chill when the temperatures dipped into the teens. I am so glad that I took the plunge and tried a different brand. I was so scared that this would be a waste of money. It's not, I would buy it ten times over!

The "collar" is way too tall - it comes up to my nose when zipped. The hood also attaches in a strange way. If not using the hood, it doesn't seem to lie down well and detaching it would be quite a production based on the way it is connected under the collar. There are things I liked about the jacket but the style just does not work for me. I'm disappointed. I was hoping to like this jacket.

Rated 3 out of 5 by CyclistBobbi Fine tune the parka to make it exceptional
I purchased the rugged ridge parka to replace my Penobscot parka that I have had since the 1990's. The Penobscot parka is the standard against which I compare all parkas. Adopting some of the features (really all of them) of the Penobscot parka would significantly improve the rugged ridge parka. First, replace the Velcro in the front flap with snaps. Second, use better quality zippers and zipper pulls throughout the jacket. And third, please, please, make major revisions to the hood. The hood needs to be roomier. I don't like the "hat hair" look and that is what happens when I wear it. This is my everyday jacket and I want to look presentable when I reach my destination. Also, make the draw string at the front of the hood longer, I frequently want a looser fit than I can achieve now.
