It does a good job blocking the wind.
With the exception of the main zipper.
If the wind is blowing towards you from your left side, you still manage to feel it in spite of all the Velcro.
Just wear a thicker sweater on the windy days.

by JoeHSV Extremely Durable
I purchased this jacket in petite medium for my daughter with Down Syndrome. We always have trouble finding clothes that fit her short stature, and this jacket fit the bill nicely. I was impressed by the heft of the jacket when it arrived. We live in AL, so normally it is fairly warm here but at times, due to the dampness, it can seem brutally cold. This jacket is perfect for one of those days. My daughter has a tendency to take her jacket off in the car and pitch it into the back seat. Well, the other day, unbeknownst to me, she did that and the jacket ended up caught in the door and dragging on the highway. Eventually it caught and flew up under the car. I was annoyed when we arrived at our destination and the jacket was gone. I realized immediately what had happened because we heard the jacket fly up under the car. We went back and found the jacket in the busy road (5:00 traffic). This was the only damage done.

I bought this coat for a trip to the very cold and snowy East coast. It worked perfectly. I walked in the snow and wind and was comfortable the whole way. There is room for layers and the hood is a great wind blocker. If you are looking for a warm jacket, this is it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by truesizewoman XL vs 1X sizing
I have never understood the difference between an XL and 1X sizing. I really needed a warm jacket with a little more coverage than a waist length jacket. I am a nurse and wear scrubs to work so layering is not always an option. I checked LLBeans sizing chart and could not tell a significant difference between the XL and the 1X. I ordered both. The XL fit perfect. I love it. Nice long arms. Not too tight. Great rear end coverage. Warm with my scrubs but can layer a turtle neck and light sweater under it to wear with my jeans. I like that it looks slightly fitted through the waist.
The 1X is definitely for a pear shaped woman. The sleeves were 2 inches shorter. It was tight in the chest and the hip area was significantly wider. It will be returned.

Rated 1 out of 5 Disappointed
I've always loved LLBean products, but this jacket was a disappointment. The main problem is that the arms of the jacket fit very tight. I was not able to comfortably wear a sweatshirt under the jacket, due to the tightness of the sleeves. The rest of the jacket fit fine, and I don't have weightlifter arms. Unless you have toothpick thin arms, I doubt that this jacket will fit well. Maybe if you only wore a thin sleeved shirt under the jacket, it might work. Also, the material used to make the jacket did not seem to be high quality. I will be returning this jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by FallsChurchCustomer Mostly good improvements to previous version
LLBean has tweaked the design of this Rugged Ridge parka over the years. I have an older model from 2010 and a newer one purchased at the end of 2014. Some pros and cons:
PROs: it is definitely lighter, has longer sleeves, and the sizes are more generous (the new Medium is like the old Large). The waist adjustment is now more accessible, instead of hidden in the chest pockets where they were before, which is better. It is very warm, especially if you layer with a sweatshirt or sweater, so it's been great this winter.
CONS: There used to be two snaps at the top of the collar, now there is one snap and a strip of Velcro. The Velcro always catches on gloves, so it's really annoying since you have to use your gloved hands to open and close the collar when zipping or unzipping. Plus, if you just use the Velcro to keep the collar closed halfway, it doesn't hold securely like a snap would. I have no idea why they got rid of the second snap. There are Velcro strips along the flap that covers the main zipper on the parka; these also catch on gloves and sweaters and over time collect threads and fuzz and become less effective. I would prefer snaps. They got rid of the two Napoleon-type chest pockets and now have one small zippered compartment. The two Napoleon pockets were great handwarmers, and handy places for currency or receipts, etc., whereas I find the new small zippered pocket to be useless. If you put your phone there it feels bulky and it's too high up so you end up putting small intems in the lower two pockets. A minor quibble, I guess.
I wish LL Bean had less boring color combinations for this jacket; I went with the French Blue, which is not bad, but I think they could do better in this regard with some brighter, more interesting colors.
All in all, a solid, durable and warm winter parka that competes pretty well with what's out there.

This is the best parka I have ever owned, and I have owned parkas from most every upper-tier company. I bought the Rugged Ridge Parka thinking that if it's good enough for the forecasters on The Weather Channel, it's good enough for me. And I was right. PROS: I bought a Petite/Small and it's so comfortable. The fit is generous enough for a heavy sweatshirt underneath without me looking huge; yet, it still fits and looks great with just a light layer underneath. Lots of nice pockets, and the zipper is great. The zipper is typical of high quality ski parka zippers. Line it up and your good. The color I bought is Black/Iron and it's really nice. I like that it's a neutral parka and, because of that, I can go color-crazy with accessories. Literally, any color scarf, etc. looks fabulous with the Black/Iron - even camel and brown look amazing with it. I didn't want to get locked into a color, or be known as "the lady with the blue (or pink or purple, etc.) parka". I add whatever colors I want via accessories and I am good to go. The level of warmth of this parka is superb. I really, really dislike the cold, and this parka is amazing. Today, as a test, I wore just a light, long-sleeved t-shirt underneath and, although the temperature in my snowy little town is in the teens and the wind chill is minus 20, I felt warm as toast. The wind was no problem for this parka and I remained dry. The warmth/wind/dry factor alone cements it for me: I LOVE this parka. The phone sales people who helped me with the related transactions were all amazing. They made shopping for it, returning the first one (it was too big), and getting my new one as easy as pie. What a great team, what a great company and what a fabulous parka! CONS: Absolutely none.

I am 5'4", 128 -130 lbs. 36B and usually wear a size 8 or 10. I purchased a Regular Medium Rugged Ridge Parka. It is just the right size for what I need in a winter coat. I don't like coats to be tight anywhere, especially in the shoulders or arms, and this one has enough room for a heavy sweater or fleece underneath. Yet it doesn't look huge and shapeless either. My arms are a bit short for my size, and the sleeves on the regular are not too long for me. The coat comes down to my upper thigh and covers my rear, which is essential for me in winter.
I bought the French Blue/Violet Blue, and while the colors do not look at all like the picture shown on the website, I like it even better. French Blue on the body of the coat is a pretty deep royal blue with a hint of purple, and the shoulders and top of arms are definitely a deep purple. The colors on the website show it as a lighter periwinkle and a darker periwinkle/violet. Not sure if this was a mistake on the website or in the factory during the sewing, but some people might be unhappy with the surprise. I like the darker colors and am really pleased with the quality of the coat. It should serve me well. Great coat, LL Bean!

I am 5'6" average built and I ordered the large. I debated on ordering both large and medium but didn't. The large will let me wear a sweater underneath or blazer. I love the fushia/plum! And the design of it being longer in the back from the front...no bulky at all. Just plain warm!
