The "collar" is way too tall - it comes up to my nose when zipped. The hood also attaches in a strange way. If not using the hood, it doesn't seem to lie down well and detaching it would be quite a production based on the way it is connected under the collar. There are things I liked about the jacket but the style just does not work for me. I'm disappointed. I was hoping to like this jacket.

I purchased the rugged ridge parka to replace my Penobscot parka that I have had since the 1990's. The Penobscot parka is the standard against which I compare all parkas. Adopting some of the features (really all of them) of the Penobscot parka would significantly improve the rugged ridge parka. First, replace the Velcro in the front flap with snaps. Second, use better quality zippers and zipper pulls throughout the jacket. And third, please, please, make major revisions to the hood. The hood needs to be roomier. I don't like the "hat hair" look and that is what happens when I wear it. This is my everyday jacket and I want to look presentable when I reach my destination. Also, make the draw string at the front of the hood longer, I frequently want a looser fit than I can achieve now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Rhubarb737 Pretty great!
I purchased this jacket in size XS Misses' Regular in the French Blue/Violet Blue combo. I'm early 30s, 5'7, 130-135lbs, hourglass shape. I initially purchased it in the plum colour, which is nice, but the one I received had a box cutter slash through part of it and by the time I exchanged it, there were no more left in my size in that colour or in fact, in any colour, sale or no sale, except for the one I got, which was also purchased on a daily markdown.
In terms of looks, first of all, as I explained I wasn't left with much choice for my colour, but it is pretty in the end, sort of periwinkle with a purple trim. I'm not a huge fan of these pastel/really vibrant shades necessarily, at least for day to day wear as opposed to the slopes, and would probably love it even more in primary colour/neutral type shades. Otherwise, the fit seems true to size to slightly roomy. The drawstring adds a bit of shape. I bought it more for function than for style, but it is not an unflattering fit either for this type of coat.
The main reason I bought this was to find something very warm-I get cold terribly easily, yet I enjoy a number of outdoor winter activities/commute daily and our winters here can be freezing. I do think this coat is a warm coat. At baseline, it is pretty warm. Add a nice sweater and put up the hood and it is definitely toasty. I am satisfied with it so far for trips outside say, to the dog park, walking to work, but need to put it to the test for more prolonged outdoor activities soon and am optimistic.
It's very well made, has excellent pockets. Minor complaint is the zipper takes some jimmying/careful aligning before working-interestingly this is an issue with this coat, but seemed fine on the one I had to exchange due to the box cutter slash. The Velcro flaps could be improved to snaps to avoid catchiness/scratchiness, but this is minor.
Overall, this seems like an awesome winter coat!

Rated 5 out of 5 by CrystalNH Best jacket I've ever had!
This is the best jacket ever! It fits great, so warm, it's a gorgeous color (I got blue) and it's an awesome fit. It has so many pockets and storage on the inside. This jacket is worth every penny. I live in cold, snowy NH and I sweat in this on the coldest days.

I am a long time LLbean shopper and recently retired my LLbean winter coat (so old I don't remember the name) with regret as it was so warm and just perfect. I thought this jacket would replace it. Warmth wise, maybe a yes as it is too soon in the season to know but it faired well at an early cold snap football game ....everything else - no. The zippers in the pockets are extremely scratchy and the opening is small so my wrist are covered with red marks. What I disliked the most was the velcro on the zipper flap. It is extremely scratchy and catches all the fibers in my sweaters and scarfs. It is abrasive on the hands when they come in contact. The velcro also makes it extremely hard to just throw the coat on and snap up to take out the trash...instead, spent minutes trying to zip up the zipper because the velcro pops open......I was so happy to have found a purple jacket to wear to the Ravens games but, alas, after several unhappy attempts to get used to this coat, it is going back. That's why I am still a LLbean Shopper...best customer service anywhere.

Rated 4 out of 5 by SJlady warm and comfy w/ lots of pockets
I"m 5'4'' & 135 lbs. The small fits me well w/ room for a sweater underneath. The zipper is a little finicky, probably because it can unzip from the bottom, a nice feature. I wish the hood folded up into the neck as my last (non LL Bean) parka did. This hood has to be removed if you don't want it hanging down your back. The zipper and hood are the reason for a 4 rating instead of 5. Still, it's very comfortable, lots of pockets inside & out, and it's WARM. I love the 2 toned teal color and I'm really glad I bought it! I like that the cuffs are darker teal since that's an area that gets dirty easily. The lining slides easily over any top.
I'd like to add I'm so pleased w/ the service at the Marlton, NJ store. Everyone is always pleasant, helpful and very knowledgeable about their products.

I ordered my boyfriend this jacket last year and Ive been waiting for it to go on sale for me to get one myself! I ordered this on the 2 a day markdown and couldn't pass up the deal! I got it in the mail this week and it came at the perfect time. I live in Pittsburgh where it can be very cold, which it begun to get this week. I ordered the small and it fits perfect with a sweatshirt or coat underneath im 5'9 and 150 (athletic build). I like the length how it covers my behind on my walks into work. I got the blue/violet combo and it doesnt look like it in the pictures, but the coat has a purple hood and the top of shoulders. I have no doubt this coat will keep me warm in the coldest temps for years to come.

I ordered this parka in the medium, in the iron/black color combo. It seems like it would be a warm parka, and of good quality, but I returned it because of the way it fits and looks. It is very bulky, especially in the back; very unflattering. Even though there is a drawcord at the waist, it doesn't affect the back. Also, I very much dislike the longer length in the back. I guess this is a trend right now with jackets, but I wish instead of making them longer in the back, to cover the backside, they would just make them longer all around. The silhouette from the side looks so bad, when the length is uneven.

I actually love the design, color and overall look of this jacket, however, I am very disappointed because it is not warm enough. We haven't even hit low temperatures yet and this jacket is not warm. The upper body and arms are cold even if I layer underneath the jacket. The jacket doesn't even warm up with my body temperature.... I will be ordering the Baxter Parka.....

I originally chose this coat because last year's thin wool coat (not from LLBean) didn't cut it. I wanted something that would fit well, with a lot of pockets, and would be warm enough to withstand last year's Northeastern sub-freezing temperatures. I spent a lot of time perusing the website and chose this for its warmth rating and reviews. And boy am I glad I did.
It turns out that my mother and sister were also looking for new winter coats this year, so I passed the link along to them. My mother was so impressed that she bought one each for all three of us. This was a very big deal, as she cannot afford such nice things for herself, let alone us, too. She picked the blue, which she loves (it's a little bright for my taste, but that's a good thing for visibility). There've been a few below-freezing mornings in the Northeast this winter and she is still thoroughly impressed.
The hood is big, but it fits well over scarves and hats as an extra waterproof layer (great for cold rain!). The sleeves are long enough to cover glove cuffs, and it covers the behind area very well.
I am a short and very pear-shaped lady, so it's difficult for me to find much of anything that fits well. To this effect, I emailed customer service asking about hip measurements, since they're not provided for this particular coat. A very nice and helpful lady emailed back the measurement of the bottom opening, saying that I should pick a size based on bust measurement. Since my hips are much larger than my bust, I'm glad I didn't. The bottom opening measurement did help me pick a size large, which fits around my hips perfectly and still allows room for bundling. The zipper that unzips the bottom of the coat for sitting is a huge help as well--no unnecessary bunching! There's tons of pockets, and I haven't lost anything out of any of them yet, which is almost a miracle.
In the subfreezing mornings, it's perfect over regular clothing. I'm sure with some long underwear and extra layers, it would be great for subzero temps as well. I really and truly love this coat and highly recommend it to everyone!!
