Rated 5 out of 5 by ExNewEngland Love these boots!
I received these as replacements for my previous pair (at least 10 yrs. old) when the soles on the old boots literally disintegrated. Though quite stiff, these fit great from the moment I put them on; perfect fit out of the box! Following the salesperson's recommendation I began wearing them at home for longer periods each day for about a week. They have broken in beautifully. I usually replace the factory innersole but haven't had to do so, yet, with these boots. I get excellent comfort and support from the factory innersoles. I can wear them very comfortably all day long. These boots are extremely waterproof; nothing gets through them. Though expensive this is a good example of "you get what you pay for". L.L.Bean truly stands behind their products!

I find this latest version of the mountain treads more true to size. My last pair was a 10W. Normally wear a 9 1/2 W so when I originally re-ordered the 10W I had to exchange them. The new boots felt a little narrow at first, but after about 10 miles they settle in and feel good now. I wish LL Bean would upgrade the inserts on this product; they tend to flatten out quickly....will need to replace with a third party inner sole to optimize comfort. Overall, they are a good buy when on sale, I would not pay the full $199 price.

I have worn Mountain Tread Boots from LL Bean for over 20 years. The changes to the boots have always been for the better. I purchased these boots several weeks ago and was a little shocked by the price increase. I remained loyal and figured the increase was just part of life. Upon receiving the boots I was amazed at the appearance. Gone was the thick tongue and the materials of the uppers appeared less than heavy duty. The fit was good and of course there is still the LL Bean Company standing behind them. My hope is that the boots will last and I am just being over critical. There must have been complaints because along with bright red shoe strings LL sent a second pair of good hiking boot strings. I wish I could recommend these boots but there are better designed boots for a whole lot less money.

When I got these I was a little skeptical about the fit so I called LL Bean to talk to them about it. We talked through how the boots should fit and what I should expect so I decided to keep them and give them a try. I was a little concerned that they were a little roomy inside for my size (I chose the same size I wear for by regular shoes) but I have used them a few times now and they are great! Super comfortable and cool looking to boot. Love these boots!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Rationalist2010 No Longer Offering "Wide EE"
I love these hiking boots and went online today to order another pair only to learn the company no longer makes the "Wide EE." This is really disappointing. I just lost the one hiking boot I could actually wear. Men with big feet, i.e., Size 14 very often also have wide feet, i.e., EE. I challenge anyone to go online and try to find a good Size 14 EE hiking boot. LL Bean had accomplished that, but now have eliminated a group of customers who would have purchased this "one of kind" hiking boot. PLEASE RECONSIDER and bring back the wide sizing. It's a 5 Star boot, but I only gave it 3 due to the lack of EE.

Rated 5 out of 5 by vtexteacher How do they do it?
I've worn a lot of boots; I'm a retired physical education teacher in Vermont- yes it does get cold and wet in Vermont's Fall and Spring when your classes are outside. Being waterproof and being light and comfortable are essential qualities when you are on your feet all day. I now walk a lot outside, so I still want the comfort and quality. When I first tried on these boots I knew. They're GREAT. How do they do it? How do they make a boot that feels like you're walking on air? I don't know, but I'm enjoying these now on my walks. No more tired feet, no more wet feet. Thanks LL Bean

Rated 2 out of 5 by TravelingRancher Will Not Buy These Boots Again
Similar to VAdiscgolfer the soles of the pair I bought started to separate from the upper after about 6 months. They are comfortable and light and very waterproof - much more waterproof than the previous version - but they don't stand up well to regular use. They are probably OK for someone who will only wear them occasionally.

Rated 2 out of 5 by VAdiscgolfer Not as good as the previous version
I've been buying these Italian made hiking boots for years. They have always been a great fit and absolutely waterproof, but after about 4-5 months of wearing them the sole is starting to come unglued.I would rate the older version 5 stars, and recommend them to others but these newer ones, not so much.

Rated 2 out of 5 by BrieflySpeaking Great Blister-Making Boot
Bought these in March but didn't take them out on the trail until July 10th, on the A-T in Central VA. I started getting blisters not too long into wearing these, but thought it was my fault as I had doubled up on insoles, putting my Superfeet inside on top of the factory insoles. That was a mistake - way too cramped, and my feet protested, as they should have. So out came the factory insoles, leaving the green Superfeet, but blisters and hot heels were still the outcome. I ended 233 miles of A-T in VA wondering if these boots were right for me, but decided to give them another "go" in NH/Maine a little over a week ago for probably the toughest 65 miles of the A-T, which spans those two states. After three days, I came off the trail because of heel blisters. I mole-foamed my heels and hit the trail again after a one day rest. That all helped, but the fatal flaw with these boots is that unless I am taping my heels up, the boots are cutting into them relentlessly on steep uphills (of which there is no shortage in NH/Maine). That's a shame, because the boots are otherwise very comfortable and tamed to my feet - but something about the heels just don't work. I took them back to LL Bean yesterday and switched them out for Oboz' Wind River boots. Let's hope they treat my heels with a lot more TLC and respect.
