I have an older pair of these boots which have been very comfortable, as long as I wear thin socks. I wanted a larger size to accommodate heavier socks for cold weather, so ordered a half size longer. However, as others have pointed out, the width was not sufficient (even though I usually don't need a wide shoe). I ended up getting the "wide" model, and they are great. Very comfortable, even on first wearing. Yes, the ankle was a bit stiff at the start, but within my first walk, it softened up and didn't bother me at all.
My only complaint now about these boots is the color selection - I wish there were at least ONE choice that was simply tan or brown!!

I wore these boots on a work trip in Guatemala's western highlands--and they were perfect. The break-in period was almost non-existent and they were comfortable over 12-14-hour days in the mountains. Highly recommend.

Many have mentioned the stiff ankles. The problem is that they are cut to be the same width from the ankle up, but most of us have calves and our ankle is the waist of an hourglass, with legs that are larger above the ankle. I decided to "break" them in, so I put a heavy weight on the outside continuously, then wore them 2 miles a day with the last two buckles undone. Now after 20 miles, they are getting better and I can lace them up for short walks. By the time I get to 40 miles, they might be wearable. But at this point, I need to let the bruises on my leg heal first.

I had ordered a pair of hiking boots from LL Bean six or seven years ago and they were wonderful. Unfortunately, they were recently lost along with my luggage, so I wanted to order another pair. I need a wide boot but that style was no longer offered, so I ordered the waterproof Trail Model Hiking boots in 8 Wide. The boot was labeled 8W but is NOT wide. I should have listened to previous reviewers who said the same thing, but I thought maybe Bean had corrected the problem. If you need the wide size, do not order these boots. I had to return them.
Also, I agree with other reviewers that the back of the top around the ankle is very stiff. Otherwise they seem to be well made.

by PetDocMom Novice Hiker Loves Them
Bought these for my 16yr old daughter just before a family trip to Canada. Even without much breaking in, she said they felt great during (and after) long days hiking provincial park trails. When others in our group detoured boggy (wet and muddy) trails, she stomped right through the middle of them! Kept her feet dry and comfortable. We ordered 1/2 size larger than usual and she wore light weight hiking socks for a perfect fit. And the most important thing, of course, is that she loves the way they look on her!

I walk for miles daily on country roads and these offer excellent support! My feet would always be sore after my walks until I got these. These boots ensure that my feet are well cushioned to absorb the impact of walking. Love that they're lightweight too. I wear these with the LL Bean lightweight longer length socks and I never have to worry about the sock bunching up in the boot and causing callouses. Highly recommend!

I had a pair of trailblazers that I loved for the past five years. The fit on these were so uncomfortable. LLBean why do you change a good thing? Thought I'd be always getting LLBean boots, but will have to look elsewhere.

Rated 2 out of 5 by MillaJ I really wanted to like these boots . . .
I wore these boots an average of 3 times a week for 11 months and I came to dread putting them on my feet. They never felt like they "broke in" and were still rubbing blisters on my heels when I finally bought a new pair to replace them. The insoles were hard and uncomfortable and the ankles very stiff and constricting. I know that LLbean would have refunded my money and that is clearly what I should have done, I just didn't want the hassle. But save your money. These are not comfortable boots. Please bring back the Pathfinder hikers in wide sizes!

Rated 3 out of 5 by ErinMA Great sturdy boot, but even the wides are narrow
I normally wear an 8.5 Wide, sometimes a 9. I ordered an 8.5 and a 9 as some reviews said these run narrow. I tried them on with mid-weight hiking socks as recommended. I could barely fit my feet into the 8.5 pair. The 9s were too narrow and felt like they were crushing the bones of my feet. (I have what are called tailor's bunions or bunionettes on the outside of my feet).
Otherwise the boots looked great, like they would provide a lot of ankle support, which for me is the main purpose of sturdy hiking boots. Unfortunately I have to return them due to the width. I have 8.5 Wide hiking boots that I bought from LL Bean about 16 years ago that still fit, but they don't have much cushioning left so they're not really suitable for hiking anymore. Since then I haven't been able to find any LL Bean hiking boots that fit, though I keep trying.

Almost didn't get these because lots of reviews say how stiff the ankle is, but, isn't that the point? Not too stiff for me. My feet feel great in these, ordered a size up from my usual size. Great price too, boots can get expensive. For the quality, the guarantee, and the name, these are terrific boots! Thanks Bean!
