Love these boots, but they do run small, had to return first pair which were my regular size for half size larger. I wear wide and ordered wide, but they were still narrow, they did loosen after a few walks. I walk 2 miles in them every day, very comfortable and so glad they are waterproof. A store opened close to me, so from now on I will go there to try on shoes before I buy them.

Years ago I purchased a pair of day hikers that I loved. When the time came to replace them, the same model was no longer available so I purchased these. Unfortunately the tops on these are higher and stiff and make walking very uncomfortable. I was hoping that they would soften up with time, but they were too uncomfortable to continue, so I returned them.

These boots rubbed on the bony bump on the outside of my ankles. It really hurt. I broke them in a little to see if the ankle shaft would loosen, but it didn't work. I had to return them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by nimott Best hikers I've bought in a long time
These hikers were a great find. I have a hard time finding hikers that are comfortable and durable - and water resistant. I found the hiker to be tight on the ankle while breaking them in, but now they fit great and I wear them on 10 hour hikes and my feet are just as happy as if I was only on a hour long walk in the woods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TNEDGE MOST COMFORTABLE HIKING SHOE I HAVE EVER HAD!
I wear a 10 or 10 1/2 medium and ordered a 10 1/2 medium. THe fit is amazing. I am a landscpe architect and have to move over smooth and rough construction sites walking all day long. Not only are they durable, clean up well, and look really cool they feel like tennis shoes! I LOVE these boots and should be a must have for anybody that hikes or walks all day. I plan on taking these rather than my northface boots to hike this fall in washington!

I have an older pair of these boots which have been very comfortable, as long as I wear thin socks. I wanted a larger size to accommodate heavier socks for cold weather, so ordered a half size longer. However, as others have pointed out, the width was not sufficient (even though I usually don't need a wide shoe). I ended up getting the "wide" model, and they are great. Very comfortable, even on first wearing. Yes, the ankle was a bit stiff at the start, but within my first walk, it softened up and didn't bother me at all.
My only complaint now about these boots is the color selection - I wish there were at least ONE choice that was simply tan or brown!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by qfMarg Great hiking boots!
I wore these boots on a work trip in Guatemala's western highlands--and they were perfect. The break-in period was almost non-existent and they were comfortable over 12-14-hour days in the mountains. Highly recommend.

Rated 2 out of 5 by HikeAlong Stiff and stiff
Many have mentioned the stiff ankles. The problem is that they are cut to be the same width from the ankle up, but most of us have calves and our ankle is the waist of an hourglass, with legs that are larger above the ankle. I decided to "break" them in, so I put a heavy weight on the outside continuously, then wore them 2 miles a day with the last two buckles undone. Now after 20 miles, they are getting better and I can lace them up for short walks. By the time I get to 40 miles, they might be wearable. But at this point, I need to let the bruises on my leg heal first.

I had ordered a pair of hiking boots from LL Bean six or seven years ago and they were wonderful. Unfortunately, they were recently lost along with my luggage, so I wanted to order another pair. I need a wide boot but that style was no longer offered, so I ordered the waterproof Trail Model Hiking boots in 8 Wide. The boot was labeled 8W but is NOT wide. I should have listened to previous reviewers who said the same thing, but I thought maybe Bean had corrected the problem. If you need the wide size, do not order these boots. I had to return them.
Also, I agree with other reviewers that the back of the top around the ankle is very stiff. Otherwise they seem to be well made.

by PetDocMom Novice Hiker Loves Them
Bought these for my 16yr old daughter just before a family trip to Canada. Even without much breaking in, she said they felt great during (and after) long days hiking provincial park trails. When others in our group detoured boggy (wet and muddy) trails, she stomped right through the middle of them! Kept her feet dry and comfortable. We ordered 1/2 size larger than usual and she wore light weight hiking socks for a perfect fit. And the most important thing, of course, is that she loves the way they look on her!
