The title may be a little extreme but these shoes are the perfect shoe for me as an industrial general contractor and a disaster inspector. I spend a lot of time on my feet and these shoes give me the protection and comfort I couldn't find elsewhere. In fact, with the need for a EE width, I couldn't find a quality American made shoe of this style anywhere else. Even Chippewa had them on back order.
Some reviewers noted their weight but they are built strong with heavy materials; just what is needed in a tough environment. And I like the less aggressive sole which is not nearly as bad about tracking in dirt and debris as past shoes with Vibram lug soles.
I wore them into my cobbler's shop to get some other shoes fixed and thought he was going to cry! He pointed out the ability to re-sole them but promised I would be dead before the Vibram soles wore out. He noted the stitching through the entire sole and the leather quality. He stated that he rarely sees work shoes like these built to the high standards of expensive dress shoes. He even felt I may have done better buying a Chippewa shoe through LL Bean because of the company?s no questions policy backing their products.
If you just need a knock around oxford these may not be for you but if you need a heavy duty shoe, wider than just the norm, that feels great and is built to last in a harsh work environment you won?t find a better shoe out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by FlyingLizard Fantastic shoes, after a bit of work
I love these excellent, top-of-the-line shoes. They will last forever. They look smart. They are super comfortable and I can tell they will grow more comfortable with mileage.
A couple of points to understand:
- They definitely run 1 full size too long (I normally wear 8.5; 7.5 fits me in these shoes).
- The original laces were too long. I suggest you spend a couple of $ to buy new ones in the correct length. 36" - 42" seems ideal. I bought a pair of medium-thickness round-section laces and they work and look great. (>> Note to LL Bean product manager/buyer: why not specify the correct length laces??? That would be easy! <<)
- The LL Bean logo is invisible when the shoes are tied, so don't worry about it.
- When the shoes were brand new, I experienced a LOT of pain where the top edges of the heel counters would dig into the backs of my heels. I visited the local cobbler who showed me how to loosen up that area of the leather by hammering on it and flexing it with my thumb a few times. After 15 mins of effort the problem was fixed and I have been a happy camper since then.
I'm glad to see that there's still a market for a quality product like this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by 11231 Not a "Katahdin Iron Works" Oxford
These are actually Chippewa Work Oxfords (and are labelled as such on the box and the shoe), and can be found for much cheaper elsewhere on the internet, but the main reason why I am sending them back is that they have "LL Bean" stamped in large letters on the tongues, which is not disclosed at all in the description here. Other than that, they seem comfortable enough.

Wore these for the first time today. Examined them closely. They fit well and seem well constructed. A good product; expecting them to last years. And they look great.

by Parisia Very nice shoe
Good fit. True to size with "normal" socks. Maybe half size up if you want to wear thick winter socks but give the shoe a chance to break in. Love the rich color and the Vibram soles are classy as they don't have an aggressive look but I'm sure they would be good in rain, slush. All around a nice business casual, blue jean shoe.

An excellent "Derby" style shoe. Not an "Oxford" at all. You might as well get it right; it's a good shoe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Flutterbug Husband loves these
My husband tried these on and refused to try anything else on or take them off. He rarely dresses up but now he loves wearing his dress socks and shoes.
Only complaint is they are a tad tight in the toes.

Old fashion well constructed shoe that fits true to size. High quality materials that should last a long time. They are a solid and stiff shoe that I expected would require some break-in time, but they were comfortable from day one.

So far so good. Hope they stand up. bought a size down just as I would as typical quality boot and they fit perfect. the liner inside the front section is a bit rough to the touch if you arent wearing thickish type socks. Soles are awesome, leather awesome. wear 11s bough a 10. polish nicely, i work outside in hot environments, on tractors, concrete, grass, so I have to ditch by 8inch boots in the summer and these fit the mold. I am happy with them as long as they will hold up and not come apart.
