Got the beanie for indoor use. The Mrs. likes the living space much cooler than I do. While I bundle up, I was still cold because of losing too much heat from my head. I tried a variety of hats, but all were too thick and I'd end up sweating. This beanie is perfect; lightweight and keeps my head just warm enough.

This is an outstanding cap. I swim and don't have time to use the blow dryer. I pin my hair up, throw this on and out into the cold winter air. Absolutely no problem with the cold. I wear it TO the pool as well, and it is surprising. The material is quite thin, but don't be fooled by the thin weight of the material. It packs a punch and keeps you warm. Added bonus - this looks great on!

I've only had this beanie a couple of days but I love it. It feels great to wear. I can wear it under some of my other hats plus under my bicycle helmet. I'm a hat wearer most of the time except for the hot summer months but still wear them outside. This beanie is very thin but just about the right warmth for inside the house in the cooler months. In combination with my boonie hats, it's a great for outdoors. I like a brim to shade my eyes so I have a hat on outside year around. I haven't tried it with a visor yet but I bet this beanie does well with it also. This merino wool beanie is a great addition to any wardrobe. Buy yours today!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by YukonCornelius More a skullcap than a beanie
Constructive criticism: I can get away with wearing a 7 3/4 size fitted cap. However, this beanie is very tight, and quite small. Notwithstanding my large melon, I would better describe this item as a skullcap or dome cap instead of a beanie.
The product I received did not look like the listing. The listing purports an all black beanie with a small, subdued tag. The product I received was black, however there was a thin greyish stitching around the bottom, and the logo appeared to be screen printed.
Positive feedback: Smartwool is a great thing. It is warm, yet not too warm, and it is quite thin. Although this beanie was too small for me, if you have an average sized head, or are looking for something to wear under a helmet I would recommend it.
LL Bean's is without peer in terms of customer service. One phone call and LLB took care of me and with no additional S/H cost.
Just because this item did not work out for me with my large skull, doesn't mean it won't for you. I would recommend LLB to anyone looking for durable, quality products and excellent customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by chowdahs not up to SmartWool
This is more like a liner for a hat or beanie. It's very small and it's so thin I'm not sure it would even work well as a linter. It's on the way back to llb.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MIRunnerGuy Seems OK but not what I expected...
I am a huge fan of SmartWool and would love to give this 5 stars, but it just isn't what I expected. Apparently SmartWool found a way to weave merino wool as thin as possible, because this cap is nearly as thin as a nylon stocking. I used it while cross-country skiing and will plan to use it on cold runs, but it fits a bit loose over my ears as compared with a cap that has a heavier weave. Other than that, it kept the rest of my head pretty warm. If you are looking for a cap to wear under another cap or under a balaclava, then this would probably be perfect for that. If you are expecting this to be your one and only go-to cap for all your winter sports (as I was), then you may be disappointed with the lack of heft. If the weave was just a little thicker and provided more of a tight fit, it would be great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by odanny Super thin, super lightweight
This is an extremely thin and lightweight beanie that would be perfect for someone who is very active outdoors. To give you an idea of its size, you can fold this beanie up smaller than you could a handkerchief. It could slip into your front pocket of a pair of pants. It would also make for excellent layering outdoors as the base layer. I don't give it a higher rating based on durability issues. Mine has a small hole in top where the tags were attached to it, even after I very carefully removed the tags. I expect the hole will eventually get larger, but I'm still keeping it.
