I'm on my 10th- yes, 10th- pair of salomon Xa Pro. I have had both the normal and 3 pairs of the waterproof. They fit my foot like they were made just for me. I have a high arch, semi-narrow foot, and they fit incredibly. I have done hiking and lots of running in these, as well as having a pair to wear to work. They are super tough and when causually wearing them everyday to work I generally get 18-24 months of every day use out of them. Running/hiking they easily last 700 miles depending on terrain. The waterproof ones are great for winter running as they both shed water and provide some extra layer of warmth.
I'm an 8.5 in most running shoes and wear an 8.5 in these.
I can't believe anyone would give these bad reviews, they're literally the perfect shoe for what they're designed to do, and have been around for >decade completely unchanged in fit, and only slightly in design. I also have several pairs of Xa comps, and they're good too, but not as good as the 3D ultra.

The tongue of the shoe gathered inside the shoe and wore blisters on the top of my feet. Returned after three days.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Anselm Good shoes with substantial arch support
These shoes are great-looking and seem quite well made. They have significant arch support. My husband has relatively low arches and said that they would be uncomfortable after standing in them a long time. We had to return them but think they would be fine for someone with medium-high arches.

Rated 2 out of 5 by chefJP Their Ok, Not like my previous ones!
These are ok but not as comfortable and don't have the support or stability of the previous pair of Salomon's I purchased a year ago! Not even close, they felt ok at the store but seem to not fit as well now, being unable to tighten them like I could the others I had. My bad I guess and I'm hoping that with some beefed up inner soles I can get by with them. the tongue on these is harder to pull up and seems a little shorter making it more difficult to get a got snug fit.
