While this is of solid construction and when closed properly will not leak...the button that flips the top open pushes so easily that if you brush against it it flies open. So if this is meant to go in a backpack for a child it is a total failure. It will come open and will soak everything in there.
However if you can use this water bottle by leaving it on a table or in a cup holder where it wont be accidently opened...then its fine. As a water bottle though that's pretty useless as they are usually used on the go!

by Adirondackpaddler keeps the mouthpiece clean
I got this to use in my kayak so that when it rolls around on the dirty kayak floor the mouthpiece will stay clean. That feature is great. I carried it up Goodman Mountian, Adirondacks, in my fanny pack and it did not leak. At home I tested it by putting it on its side on top of a towel. In some positions it leaked, and in others it did not. I am very happy with the way it works, but I can tolerate a bit of leakage.

Rated 2 out of 5 by BostonBeaner Leaks, and moldy spout
At first we thought we had found the perfect water bottle. The snap-down design of the mouthpiece seemed like the perfect solution to all the other bottles -- it would prevent leaks and keep the mouthpiece from contacting dirty surfaces. And our son loved the design on the bottle. We've used this bottle for about 9 months now and are ready to search for a new one. To pop open the mouthpiece, you push a button on the front of the lid. The problem is, that the slightest touch or rub against the button will pop it open. Putting the water bottle in a school bag almost guarantees that it will pop open on its own -- and then it leaks, and you've got the mouthpiece exposed to dirt. So that aspect of the design needs improvement. We hand wash this bottle every day, and leave it in the dish rack to dry overnight. The rubber mouthpiece does not easily separate from the lid for washing, like you see on some other bottles. For this reason, we leave the rubber mouthpiece attached to the lid because it is a fairly short section of tubing and we never thought drying would be an issue. We were shocked then to recently discover a whole bunch of black mold growing inside the stem of the mouthpiece. It is very narrow and there is no good way to clean it. We've never had a mold problem with other kid's bottles, and I'm wondering whether the snap/pinch closure system -- which essentially folds the rubber stem in half -- is contributing to the problem, because that is the specific area where the mold formed.

My 8 year old son drinks tons of water and goes through water bottles fast. All leakproof bottles eventually leak, and most don't hold up to his use. This bottle in general has been good. It is a bit big in his lunch box, but it does just fit. The straw on occasion has come loose and made it difficult to actually get water out. Also the internal tubing eventually twisted and prevent all water from flowing. I was able to fix this after I figured out what was wrong. The locking mechanism is poor. I find that it hardly stays closed and will open if a gnat flies by. I had purchased another water bottle from an outdoor store that was great until it shattered. So much for unbreakable. I am still searching for the perfect bottle.

I can't figure out how to put the straw back in after the initial wash. The valve piece that connects to the straw keeps popping out and is not secure. I am returning this and buying Camelbak or Contigo kids' water bottles.

My child loves this water bottle and that's why I'm giving it 2 instead of 1 star. After rigorous use, it leaks, the handle keeps detaching and there is black mold growing in the spout that won't come off with a spout brush.

Rated 2 out of 5 Leaky, Difficult to Clean, and No Replacement Part
I really wanted to love this bottle. My son loves the shark design, and the flip top. However, I still have not figured out how to remove the mouthpiece for cleaning, it leaks when stored in a lunchbox, and most importantly, I need to replace the straw, and there are no replacements for this. So, now, I have a completely useless cute bottle. I expected better from L.L. Bean.

My 2-year-old son was very excited to receive his new water bottle. It holds a lot of water, which is great, seems pretty sturdy (it has already had a few tumbles from the table), and a very fun design. I got it for him in anticipation of our first family camping trip, so we are on the right track...
