I have the black version of the bag, and being a backpack/man-purse sort of guy (Boy Scout...so everything ends up in my pack...Be Prepared!) I was initially worried that I wouldn't have space for all my toys...er...I mean equipment.
Laptop, cords, umbrella, 1.5 inch binders, paper, a handful of pens, a phone charger, a phone battery, a knife, a multi-tool, eyeglass case, an index card case, a first aid kit, several types of useful medicines and some business cards later...and I have to say, my worries have past.
The bag looks professional, is well constructed, has a decent handle and is easy to get in and out of.
My one concern is that the bottom is not more rugged. I would like leather or a very rugged synthetic material to get that 5th star.
All in all, I recommend it.

This pack has to be returned because it is not large enough for 3 laptop computers. My son is a web developer and has his personal laptop plus 2 work related laptops to carry. He also wanted one large enough with which to go hunting and to carry gear in place of the laptops. I also thought the material was a bit thin. There were many compartments, both little and big.
For someone other than my son, I believe this would be a fine pack as long as very heavy, large items are limited.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Littlehelper Just what I was hoping it would be
I was looking for a replacement backpack. I wanted something that was going to stand up to local hikes and plane travel. I always use a backpack for plane travel to hold most of my personal items like cosmetics, but also to hold a laptop or ipad or anything else I want to carry besides my purse. Being female I also needed it to be comfortable on my back and also have easy access to all compartments. This is the perfect backpack for me. It is very attractive and seems to be made to last a long time. I like that the material is water resistant and the zippers seem extremely durable. I am sure I will be enjoying this backpack for years to come.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Jcb122 We'll made, but my back hurts
This pack is very well made. I love the metal top handle, and the open pocket was very convenient for stashing items at the end of a train ride. It fit my laptop (15 in), iPad, some folders, and notebooks. I liked that the folders stayed upright and none of the contents spilled out, since there are many folder pockets. The strap pocket for phones was a nice touch, and the water bottle pockets fit my camelback snugly. I also appreciate that the material is water proof, although I never got to test it in the rain.
The weight distribution seemed off to me, so that most of the weight rested on my lower back and the pack did not even touch my upper back. Adjusting the straps did not help. My back hurt the entire week I used the pack. Also, the pockets could be considered a bit small. I ended up exchanging for a quad pack and my back seems to be feeling better.
The excursion bag looks really cool, is well made, and has so many pockets! I really wanted to like it but the bag just rested wrong on me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by HandyMom Compartments are small
My husband purchased this pack for his commute. Initially he was very excited, as it is a well-made pack with many thoughtful details. However, what would usually be the main compartment in a backpack is divided into two sections in this pack, both rather narrow front to back. His laptop and papers fit nicely into the one compartment, but the space that is left (the second "main" compartment) is too narrow to fit his soft-sided lunchbox! This was a disappointment. I also tried the pack after he decided he didn't want it, and found the large number of compartments and pockets to be a bit too much of a good thing.
This pack is also a bit short on my husband - I think it's a 17" high pack and he is well over 6 ft. tall. In the end, we returned this for a Quad backpack, which he adores, and which has a very roomy main compartment (with a laptop sleeve, like this pack). The Quad is also 19" tall, which is a more comfortable length for him.
In summary for a tall person, or for anyone with something bulky to tote (bike helmet, boxy lunch cooler) this is not the right pack.

This is the best backpack I've had in a LONG time! First of all, the jade citron color is amazing. It's unique, bright, and clashes with everything I wear which makes me very happy! It stands out and fits my personality. I get lots of compliments on it.
Second, the material. This was the most surprising thing about it. The material is almost soft. Like a canvas bag. Right out of the box it was ready to go. I was prepared for a lengthy period of "breaking" in, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it wouldn't be necessary. I received this bag while on a family vacation and I just loaded it up and went about my buisness. No stiff zippers and it handled diaper bag duty like a champ! Very impressed.
Third, the bag itself. Wow! Pocket nirvana! I'm not overly fussy about "organization", but when it comes to backpacks, I like to put things in one place so I know where they are at all times. It took a little bit of time, but after just 2 weeks everything has it's place and I'm totally in love. When I first got a good look at this bag, I was worried that the pockets would take away from the main storage ability of the bag. Again, I was pleasantly surprised. Shoes, diapers, chang of clothes (for big sister), bottles, blankets, baby wipes, baby dolll, and then my wallet and phone...no problem at all for this bag.
I should mention that my usual stuff doesn't take up quite that much space in the bag, but I don't carry a purse so my bag is with me all the time. I'm confident that when I need to load it up, I can. But on a day to day basis, it's only maybe a 1/4 full.
Fourth, it is very comfortable. It's not awkward and sits as loosely or tightly as I want to my body.
The only thing I would change about this bag, if I could, would be the organizer in the front pocket. For me, it needs a couple more dedicated pen holders and the divided pockets could be a little deeper with elastic along the top of them so that they didn't gap so much. I haven't had any issues, yet, with stuff falling out of those pockets, but I'd like at least one of them to be a little deeper. That's really the only thing I don't like. Everything else about it is just awesome! Thanks, LL Bean!

Rated 5 out of 5 by scbeancounter Great backpack!
My son needed a new backpack so after extensive research I came across the Excursion. This looks to be the perfect bag for my son. It is sturdy, has all of the space he needs, looks great and will hopefully hold up significantly better than the last backpack we bought him from a company other than LL Bean.
