Rated 1 out of 5 by fishermann design flaw -- line gets caught in between drag /
There is a design flaw in this reel, the smallest version of the reel. The drag adjustment / nut sticks up above the bail, rather than being recessed into the bail. These means that about every 500th cast, your line will find its way on bail closure in between the drag nut and bail. You probably wont notice so you will start reeling in, and the line will wrap around the shaft rather than the bail. To get it out you can try unwinding but by the time you notice, you probably would have reeled for about 1 minute with no retrieve. The tangled mess can be removed by unscrewing the drag nut and removing, hopefully you dont drop it in the water. Remove the tangle and cut line, and hand line in your lure.
Retie, respool and start casting agin, perhaps on the next 500th cast you will notice, if not repeat.
II love LL Bean product and the company, but this one......they didn't actually ask a fisherman to try. Seems like they simply rebranded and cheapo reel.
Probably alot of better options for small cheap reels that dont have this design flaw.
Again, i have the smallest combo, so cant speak to the larger reels.

by Jaynathan Great rod and reel
I picked up my combo last summer at the Freeport LL Bean HQ. Didn't get a chance untill this summer to use my purchase. Wow, more than I expected. After a few casts it felt like one of my old favorite rods, comfortable and easy to use. I was throwing lures and chunck bait with ease and very comfort. Drag was easy to set and positive clicks for adjustment, bail was light to pull and a dream to set. Reeling was easy and with out any effort. The rod performed great when I had a striper take my lure. Great flexability and very strong for the fight. Stood up to a couple ten pounders with out a problem. I would say this once again, another excellent product LL Bean has and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great rod & reel combo.

I haven't used it yet but it looks to be solid quality as most LL Bean products. Perfect size and build for the type of fishing I do.

PRODUCT IS GOOD HOWEVER, ONE MAJOR SUGGESTION. FOR THOSE PEOPLE THAT HAVE NEVER FISHED WITH A SPIN OUTFIT, YOU URGENTLY NEED TO INCLUDE DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO FEED THE LINE FROM SPOOL THOUGH EYELETS AND PURPOSES OF BAIL.

by VegasSAR Rod is not gray or high gloss
My rod and reel arrived today and it is a GEM.
My rod is all dull black but I have no problem with that.
I grabbed a few worms out of the refrigerator and using no weight,I was able to cast out 50+ feet just from the weigh of the worm.
I hooked a 3 and a half pound cat fish and he gave that rod a work out.
The tip really bent hard but it never broke.
After that I was playing with the drag setting and I let the fish tire himself out.
The reel is silky smooth and the drag works like a champ.
Shad run starts in about a month and this rod and reel combo will be what I will use.
I would recommend to any one who can cast but for younger kids I suggest a 5 foot rod.
Excellent product from China

Great dependable rod and reel. I am really a fly fisherman but sometimes I want to go spin fishing. You can always depend upon LL Bean quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by FishinBeanerME Great entry level combo
I bought the 5' 6" combo for my girlfriend when she tags along on my fishing adventures and she loves it. This is definitely a quality outfit for beginners. She can cast twice as far with this rod then her previous Berkley combo which I returned after finding the Angler Spin Outfits at Bean for nearly half the price.
I myself am a strong supporter of the Discovery spin series but am thinking about picking up another one of these to stash in my truck as a backup. Regardless I'll be picking up a few extra for when family visits. Can't beat the quality at this price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Jaynathan For the price...
Bought this rod & reel combo while in Maine on vacation. Felt good in the hand, bail set is positive and felt. Pre-loaded with about 200 yards of 12lb test monofilament.
Used it the very next day for some smaller stripers, No bird nests with all kinds of different lures and baits. The one thing I did notice was this two piece does have a tendency to not hold together, Multiple times is while casting I could see the upper half of the rod come loose and almost come apart. Over all, an very good rod. action and sensitivity to a light hit were great, handled the big hits with out a problem. Drag was set to just below about three quarters and was easily adjustable. I would give this an 8 to 8.5 out of 10. But for the price....can't be beat.

Negative reviews baffle me on this item. As with anything, you get what you pay for, and here, you are not paying for a $1,000 fishing combo. I have a couple of those, and they are outstanding. This item, however, is outstanding for what it is. You will not find a better $50 combo on the market. And as with everything else, LL Bean backs it 100% for a lifetime. They've made a believer out of me.
