I thought these would be the biking shorts of my dreams-and in every way except the essential one they are. Great quality, the shorts are sort of a silky material that hangs well but doesn't cling a good longer length and a lot of wonderful zippered pockets. My husband has a pair like these that I was coveting.. BUT...the padding is very thin, flat, not contoured, not like the padding in bike shorts that I am used to (Pearl Izumi). This is more like an insert.Since the group of gals I ride with all like real padding, I would not recommend them. But if you don't want that much padding, these are lovely shorts. I will try to find very light shorts with pockets to pull over my bike shorts to get this effect.

As with most clothing I have received from LLBean, these cycling shorts are of high quality and well constructed. I love the longer length, the detachable padded liner, and the soft feel of the ripstop nylon. However, I usually wear a medium in Bean shorts but needed to size up to a large, so I sent them back for an exchange. The item description says that they are for mountain biking, but they can be worn for any type of cycling and even around town--with or without the liner.

I have these in both colors. I love them, they are comfortable, the pockets zip shut, they don't snag on the seat, and the waist is adjustable so you don't need a belt. There is no gaping at the waist and they don't slide down and give plumber butt. They are also super flattering! The padded liner is detachable so you can use a different liner or go without.

I have been a road cyclist for years but have just started mountain biking. These shorts have gotten decent reviews around the internet so I thought I'd give them a try. My jeans are a size 2/XS but in all cycling gear I seem to need a small so that's what I ordered. Plus, LLBean does not have the XS.
The shorts liner with the cycling pad feels a little loose, which wouldn't be a big deal but the cycling pad is a definite no-go. It is so stiff that when I put the shorts on it sticks straight out in front looking, uh, male. And in the back the pad comes way high up. It covers my sacrum. I'm not sure going down a size would fix this. Washing them might soften up the pad or it might not. Doubt it would shrink it any.
The outer shorts are only slightly big, certainly workable. The seem to be made well, plenty of pockets and would resist a snag on the trail.
They are going back.
