Rated 4 out of 5áby CrystalBlue Wanted to love it, but...
I loved this coat when I saw in it in the store. They had limited sizes so I ordered it. I ordered it in regular small, regular medium, petite small, petite medium - trying to find one that would actually fit. It just did not work out. The fit is just weird. I was disappointed. I really wanted this coat. I loved the feel of the exterior material as well as the coziness of the fleece. The pockets were a bit shallow and placed in an position that did not feel comfortable - no matter what size I tried. I really feel with a bit of redesign, this could be a great coat. All went back - sadly.

After wearing this jacket for two winters, the only good thing I can say about it is that it's warm. Otherwise, it's heavy, bulky and wrinkled. The fleece lining clings to most other fabrics. The zipper is difficult to close. The attached hood is awkward when sitting in a car. The sleeves are too long, and the pockets are too narrow. Not what I expected from an L.L. Bean product.

Parka was nicely made and comfortable. On me, I thought the outer fabric was too thin for the fleece inside layer, so didn't hang as well as I thought it could (my shape to blame? - slim 5'6", 135 lbs). Returned.

Rated 5 out of 5áby Meadows1209 Wonderful parka
Just received my parka this morning, it's beautiful. The eucalyptus shade is lovely, a tad more muted than expected, which is ideal because I spend many afternoons around horses, who are generally less than pristine. A bit of horse slobber is less obvious on neutral colours.
I'm 5'4", ~130 lbs, kinda curvy but slim-hipped, and the medium I ordered fits beautifully. Another cold snap just hit Upstate - down in the teens this week - but this coat with its fleece liner, a long tee + a warm wool sweater kept me cozy & comfortable in serious cold. The extra length is much appreciated compared with most down jackets. I'm puzzled about so many other medium-sized women ordering up to accommodate 'tight' shoulders & arms in this coat.
Sleeves are a bit long, yes, but I folded them up one turn and since they're nicely finished on the inside, they look fine. Finally, it's a real treat to have a warm, good-looking coat for business in town on the way home from a horse stable. I'd thought only a down jacket would see me through our coldest winters.
Thank you, LLBean!

Rated 4 out of 5áby Tmm14 Comfortable, True to size, Perfect for spring
I spent a lot of time reading the reviews for this coat before purchasing... I'm studying abroad in Europe this spring so I wanted something warm and light at the same time that would somewhat protect me from the rain. This coat is perfect. The only complaint I have is that the pockets are pretty small and placed lower then normal.
I'm 5'2 120 pounds and wear a size small. I would say about 80% of these reviews said that this coat runs large, so I decided to purchase a petite medium. When I got the coat it was HUGE. I had to exchange it for a petite small, it fits much better now and I still have PLENTY of room to fit sweatshirts and heavy sweaters underneath. Overall i'm very happy with my purchase, it took less than a week to send my item back and receive my new size!

Soooo happy with this incredibly cozy all-weather, all-season coat! I'm extremely cold-sensitive, and prior to purchasing this dream-parka I had to return two LLB microfleece/TEK -down combo winter coats -- supposedly good for sub-zero conditions (not!). (Note: Beanie, please dump the TEK combo and bring back the good old 85%+ pure down.) The slightest wind blew right through the coats in spots (e.g., especially upper back and arm areas).
Definitely not so with the Fleece Lined Explorer Parka, which has kept me warm and chill-free for long walks in sub-zero winds with temps in the single and teen digits, and is equally comfortable when temps climb to the 30's and 40's. For coldest temps the arms could stand a bit more insulation, but a Heatkeepers Everyday Underwear turtleneck and a Fitness Fleece jacket pretty much solves the cool arms problem.
As just about everyone else as noted, beware the sizing. I heeded the much-appreciated advice in the Comments section and chose a large, even tho' I'm a medium in LLB coats and most LLB jackets. I also ordered a medium, just in case. It fits nicely without the liner, but I look like a sausage when the liner is in. I'm sort of carrot-shaped -- therefore while the A-shape lower half of the parka probably works very well with "pears", I'd be happier with a straight cut. Nevertheless, overall the Explorer is the closest I've come to LLB coat perfection!
Some comments mention the longer sleeves which I, however, like -- no riding up to the elbows when driving a car --. Also, mittens or gloves tuck up under the generous cuffs thereby preventing drafts.
Also appreciate the hood design -- no cold ears or drafts around the neck when the parka is zipped all the way up -- and the visor is long enough to shield my eyes from rain, snow, sleet, or sun. On especially stormy cold days under the hood I wear the best ever winter hat with earflaps (Beanie's Polartec Windchallenger Fleece Baseball cap).
Now for the "Exception" to Perfection: The parka itself would truly be pure perfection if it had large functional patch-type pockets as befits something with the name "Explorer". As is, guess the two skimpy wimpy narrow pockets are fine for someone with teeny tiny hands and extremely long slender fingers enabling them to reach waaaay down to the curved "pit" . They certainly don't work for me...I carry kibble-sized dog treats and since I've been wearing the Explorer Parka my usually easy-going Beagle is coming close to melt-down stage waiting for me to extract a treat as I fumble and poke at the impractical, annoying non-functioning pockets. Grrrrr!
Hey, but on the bright side: can't wait for springtime days when the liner is removed and I can wear the parka as a slouchy trenchcoat. Yay Beanie!!! Tra Dah!!!

The sleeves are way to long, the cuff way to wide- only has one button- so not adjustable.. The pockets are very strange.. cut the shape of a mitten.. but very tight and no room for your full hand..

Rated 5 out of 5áby tourmalineblue Superawesome coat!
I love this jacket! It's soft and worn in feeling and the fleece lining rocks. It's a jacket I feel I can move around in, which is great as I am outdoors a lot. The fit is really good too- I had read reviews that if you have a sweater/layers on underneath- that it may be too tight and you should go up a size. But, I purchased my regular size and it fits fine with a wool sweater and t shirt on underneath. The color is awesome and it's refreshing to have metal zippers. The only mild drawback is that the pockets are a little hard to get into but I guess that helps whatever you put in them to not fall out. This a snazzy jacket!

Great coat. Bought it for late fall/early winter weather but it has seen me through some extremely cold days. The shell blocks the wind and the fleece lining is great. Love the little zipper pocket inside.

I love the way this coat looks, but it is very snug with a sweater shirt on. I ordered the size I always wear, but it is too tight with another layer- I wish it fit. I think if I got a larger size the sleeves would be way too long.
