Rated 5 out of 5 by KKGH Performed very well in a hard test of function!
I put this top through a 5 day backpacking trip in the Glacier Peak Wilderness this past week. Black flies and mosquitoes and strong sun are issues there, and this lightweight top kept my shoulders from being fried and my torso and arms from being devoured. I had black flies biting my legs right through my heavy hiking socks, but they did not even settle for long on this shirt, let alone try to bite through it. Hiking was hot work and yes, a tank top would have been nice to wear in the heat, but I wound up wearing this with nothing under it and found it very comfortable despite the long sleeves (which are light). Highly recommended!

Rated 3 out of 5 by whalesister Cute but too heavy for hiking
This shirt was advertised as light-weight, but it's definitely not. I liked the color and style and really wanted the bug-protection for a back-packing trip into the Wind-River Mountains during the worst of mosquito season, but the No Fly Zone shirt isn't light or breathable enough for hiking. Also, the sleeves aren't stretchy enough to slide up or wide enough to roll. I sent it back.
As for bug-protection, however, I can attest to the effectiveness of Permethrin (the chemical this shirt is treated with). I bought my own Permethrin and sprayed socks, pants, (a different, actually light-weight and breathable) shirt, and hat--and then went trecking through clouds of mosquitoes and biting flies and hardly got a bite. Spraying was a big pain, though, and after one wash lost most of its effectiveness on my daughter's clothes (was supposed to last through 6-7 washes). L.L. Bean claims bug-protection for up to 70 washes on their No Fly Zone clothes, so if they can come up with a truly light-weight, breathable, stretchy version of this shirt, I'd buy it tomorrow.
Three stars for the bug-protection and styling, a big meh for the fabric, which makes the rest irrelevant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by juko I love this sun blocking hoodie.
I wear a lot of LLBean clothing, especially anything that has sun blocking qualities. I am very fair skinned and sunburn easily if I am not careful. This hoodie is perfect, down to the hand protectors. I wear it for walking, biking, even when the sun isn't boiling. It keeps me cool and protected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Phloxy Great fit
I bought the top for bug control, and it seems to work effectively. The thumb holes and hood provide good cover. The material is a nice weight, although it is a little "clammy" when it is humid. Better in cool, dry conditions. I'm not thrilled with the grey color, but I kept it because it fits and will serve my outdoor needs. I'm 5'4" and 130 lbs., and the medium fits perfectly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by funseeker Bug shirt
There are several things I like about this shirt and several I don't--hence the 3 star rating. I like the color (emerald) and fit of this shirt. I like that it is slightly loose and it does look nice. I also like the back pocket. As soon as I received the shirt, I wore it on a quick 3.5 mile hike in the woods after work on a humid evening and it does seem to keep the bugs away. With that being said, the thing I don't like about this shirt is the fabric. It is thicker than I was expecting making it kind of warm to wear for warm weather hiking. Plus, I was expecting the fabric to be soft and it is really stiff and itchy against the skin. Granted, I did not wash the shirt before use. I may wash it and try it out a second time. If it doesn't get any softer or less itchy, I will likely return the item because it is too itchy to wear alone--especially for the steep price tag. I can honestly say I have never had a work out shirt be itchy and I own plenty of them! As a personal pet peeve, I also don't like the thumb holes but it is the trend in outerwear these days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TeacherSailor Just what I needed!
I originally bought this for hiking, but I threw it in my sail bag yesterday. An hour into our race the wind died, sun beat down, my liberally sun screened arms began to turn red, and the no-see-ums came out. It seemed too hot for long sleeves, but I was desperate. This shirt cooled me down, saved my skin, and seemed to discourage the bugs. I'm buying another so I'll always have a clean one to pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SurryShopper Bought a Second One
I liked this pullover so much that I bought a second one. I like the slim looking fit. I had read that the long sleeves were a problem. I either roll up the cuffs or push the rolled up cuffs up my arm for a three-quarter sleeve look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by KKGH fits just fine, looks good
In a few weeks I'll be checking out the bugproof aspect of this top. But I have great hopes for it as it's very light and fits well. I do wish it was a zip on jacket instead so it'd be easier to put on while hiking, as compared to having to pull something over the head, but that's a minor issue. The North Cascades valleys are horrible for black flies in early summer, so I'm counting on this top and will report back!

Rated 1 out of 5 by ARB80 YES FLY ZONE
I have this hoodie in blue (as well as other no fly zone clothes) and it worked very well in the Ranthambore Wildlife Park in India.. However, when I wore the Jade Citron hoodie, the gnats were completely attracted to it (not to any of my other treated clothes). In seconds, my shirt was completely covered with gnats both front and back---luckily I had a jacket with me and I was able to take off the shirt. I don't know if the shirt came through the factory untreated; or if it was the color that attracted the bugs. I returned it to the store; and the clerk told me that writing a review on the web was the only way to alert the manufacturer/LLBean company.
