A disappointment. As day wore on, sweater drooped and got longer and longer until it reached mid-thigh -- and I'm 6'1". Didn't keep shape and looked like a billowy, misshapen dress by the end of the day. Beautiful sweater, although not quite the same color as what I ordered. And washing instructions -- available in several languages; none are English. Headed back your way.

Washed sweater according to directions at the end of last winter before storing the sweater. I put it on this morning and much to my surprise it had shrunk. It also shedding like crazy. I can't pull of the little fuzz balls fast enough. They just keep coming back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JWD4 Great sweater, weird buttons
Sweater is pretty amazing. Thick and warm. I'm 6'4", 225 and the large tall fits perfectly with just the right amount of bagginess that you'd look for in a heavy sweater. It's a teeny bit itchy if you wear it over a short sleeved shirt but it makes up for that in warmth. I got one in oatmeal and one in navy, and quite like both.
The only complaint i have is that if you look really closely at the buttons, you'll see they are emblazoned with something that looks very much like a swastika. Very odd, i'm sure the detail is accidental and it's not obvious at all. You can hardly see it; but now that i've noticed it i'm a little weirded out. Probably not the best gift for your WWII vet grandfather.

Not very scratchy - I can even touch it! (I'm the buyer, not the wearer as I am allergic to wool) and very warm without being too bulky.
Runs large, I would say (my wearer is a Medium Tall) and extra long. He's 6', 160 pounds but all "medium talls" have fit him well so he's a standard "medium tall" albeit thin. This would be "too long" but for the fact that the bottom is well-knit to stay close to the body and not look baggy.
We were pleased that the negative comments about the wrist cuffs aren't in evidence. We wanted wrists that were "quite tight for warmth" and it seems to be that.
Haven't washed it yet, so we'll see. Too soon to comment on whether it will pill. Fingers crossed.
It is so rare to find real wool these days. This is the "old LL Bean" that we knew/loved. Now if we could just have some GOOD mock turtlenecks with fairly tight necks and thicker cotton.

Wonderful sweater! I'm 6'1" and 175 lbs and generally wear a 16.5 x 34 shirt and the medium fits great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by delf33 Chemical Smell!
I ordered the medium, tan color. Great, loose fit, and the material is really comfy and warm, definitely not too itchy. It's thick but still really moveable- a quality wool sweater. When I first took it out of the packaging, though, it reeked of chemical smell and was damp. I tried hand washing it out, but it still really stunk, so I just tossed into the washing machine- twice. It shrunk a lot, so now it's a fitted sweater, but I still like it. Washing it softened up the fabric and gave it a worn feel. It doesn't sound like this is a common problem, but I thought I'd put it out there. I'm still planning on ordering the crew neck version as well, so obviously I think highly of the sweater, just maybe not the packaging or shipping so much.

I have purchased 3 of these sweaters over the last 6 years or so. I live in them during the winter. This winter I got the oatmeal model. The wool is heavier than previous years which is a plus but I have a minor quibble.
The neck has gone from a 4 button to a 2 button which I think is less useful. My only other suggestion for next year maybe a hunter green?

I've worn many different types of Bean sweaters for many years, and this Bean's Classic Ragg Wool Henley Sweater with the stripes is right near the top of the list of my favorites.(The Bean navy Cashmere Quarter-Zip tops the list).I had received this sweater, solid carbon/navy,for Christmas and just loved everything about it! When I quickly decided that I wanted another Bean's Classic Ragg Wool Henley Sweater,I sprung for the extra 10 bucks and ordered the oatmeal with stripes. Just got it and I'm delighted with it!Like the one that I recived for Christmas,it fits perfectly, looks sharp, and does a great job of keeping me warm in the cold outdoors.Being able to unbutton the buttons at the neck allows me to remain comfortable when I'm inside. This style also comes up higher on the neck than a crew and helps keep the back of my neck warm. - I'm 6 ft,160 lbs. and the regular medium fits perfectly! ~ All and all,an excellent sweater that I highly recommend!

Rated 2 out of 5 by CareyG Such awful colors...
As a longtime L.L. Bean customer I was excited to see this sweater being offered again, but am rather disheartened by the color choices offered.
I'm 6'4", 220lbs with broad chest/shoulders, and a Large Tall fits me very well (a big plus for Bean offering us taller gents "Tall" options). The ragg wool is noticeably warm (i.e. of suitable weight & thickness) and serviceable against the skin (not itchy, or terribly itchy with a short-sleeve shirt) and the styling is classic (also a big plus; "classic" never goes out of style).
However, and this is the deal breaker with me, the color options are/look very dated (decidedly not "classic"), most notably how the colors are heathered. This is especially problematic as they look far different in person, than on a computer screen. This is a shame as I like this sweater in every other regard save that.
For the price I'd recommend this sweater to someone provided color weren't an issue for them.
Bottom line: good sweater, bad/dated colors/heathering.

Needed a warm sweater to wear in the elements and got a lot more than I bargained for. I've had this now for 3 months and the lambswool is extremely comfortable and warm. This is the article of clothing I get the most compliments on.
