Rated 4 out of 5 by SSMaine Plush, very firm
I have been on a pillow quest for what seems like a very long time. I wish I thought to blog about it when I first started if only to help others......This pillow came as promised, was generously full, no odor and had a sateen cover which seem to give it a bit extra firmness. I wanted very badly to like this pillow but found in the middle of the night I would be reaching for my old pillow due to the extreme firmness of this pillow. If i had a mirror, I bet my neck was not parallel to the bed but angled toward the ceiling. I am a side sleeper so I always go for the 'firm' support but in this case it was just a bit too firm. I returned it and ordered the medium. I still cannot believe I am spending this much for a pillow but, I figure I can invest in something that works or give my money to a chiropractor........I love LL Bean products and their commitment to stand behind what they sell. I'm crossing my fingers that the medium will be the winner!

Rated 3 out of 5 by LongtimeBeansfan Soft standard 700-fill down pillow
A good pillow is hard to find. I ordered the soft standard because I sleep in all positions and that was the recommended type. And I committed to keeping this pillow even though it is expensive because I got it on sale and with a coupon and wanted to give some time to try it out. I've never owned a down pillow but have slept on ones that are very comfortable but that are much more expensive. The positive thing about this pillow is that it seems well made and fluffs up really nicely. However it also packs down during the night and I have to re-fluff it. Also when fluffed it is very full and puffy and fits tightly in a standard size pillow case and that makes it feel firmer. The soft is fairly firm to begin with. Furthermore the label states that it has guaranteed 75% down fill; no idea about the other 25%. For these reasons I would not personally recommend this pillow to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Jumpingjoecool Excellent pillow and particularly for the price
Great, firm down pillow. May be a bit short compared to regular length pillow, but wouldn't hesitate to buy again. I'm a side-sleeper and pillow fussy.

Totally worth the price. My sleep quality and neck pain have dramatically improved. Soft, easy to get into just the right shape, a joy to sleep on.
After years of getting expensive well-known brand of memory foam pillows (and changing them every year or two) I found they weren't helping anymore and actually giving me new neck pain. Glad I switched to goose down!

I've never written a review before and have loyally purchased from LLBean for 40 yrs.! Unfortunately this purchase was a real disappointment. I've been looking forward to replacing my goose down pillow for a while. Saved up my $10 coupons and waited for a sale. I carefully read the reviews, followed the advice and ordered a medium fill. After the first night I woke up with numbness in the fingers of my left hand. This pillow doesn't allow for shaping to support the natural contours of the cervical spine instead it's like a non give foam pillow. I'm hoping this will help LLBean make a better pillow.

Rated 2 out of 5 by WestportBear Way too firm
I have used the Damask Down pillows from LLBean for many years. I thought I would try the Sateen Goose Down pillow because an increase in firmness would be helpful (I am 6 foot 200 pound man with a LARGE and I assume HEAVY head).
This pillow was not just firm. It was unyielding. And I woke up a number of times during the one night I slept with it. At pne point during the nightI removed the pillow case in order to unzip the pillow protector to let the pillow "breath" and hopefully soften. But no dice.
I had ordered two and they were returned promptly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by dddvvvzzz Why would you make this pillow far too big?
Quality of the pillow is excellent but why do you make the pillow so large that it pushes far beyond LLBean shams effectively making the pillow firmer because of that. Even Soft pillow was firmer than average Medium.

I tried a "down alternative" pillow on the suggestion of a friend that hers was better than down. Yeah, not so much. It was more like a sleep alternative--the alternative being NOT sleeping while punched and prodded the pillow to make it comfortable.
Now that I have my new down pillow from L.L. Bean, I'm back to getting plenty of sl...zzzzzzzzzzz.

I have always used a goose down pillow, so when my existing pillow started showering feathers every time I laid on it, I felt it was time for an upgrade. The issue, in my opinion, is that pillows are sort of like hiking shoes. What one man loves, the other hates. So I went ahead and placed my faith in ol faithful LLBean to select my new closest friend. It ended up being a great fit and I look forward to many years of zzzzzzz's. A few thoughts:
1. The reviewers are correct as to the firmness of these pillows. I went soft, although I was concerned I was going to get a flimsy overly soft cloud. I ended up with a pillow that was as firm as I would ever want it. If it was any more firmer, I would have to send it back. So, if you want a semi-firm pillow, go with the soft.
2. As soon as you get it home, spend three to five minutes fluffing it. It makes all the difference in the world.
3. The comments about the fit into a pillow case are correct. It was like stuffing a sleeping bag into a stuff sack and it looked a little funky after I was through, but the comfort factor has me concluding, "who cares."
4. This might sound weird, given we are talking about goose down, but the pillow does sleep warm. In January, it is wonderful. But I live in Scottsdale Arizona, so I wonder how I will feel in August......
