Bought last fall for my 11 year old son (we chose the gray). We loved it right off the bat - great looking, warm, comfy, great fit. However, it does shed, and shed, and shed, and shed. I was hoping it would lessen over time, but no - little pieces of down all over my car, all over his clothes, etc. Not enough to return, though. However, I recently noticed that the inside fleece (near his mouth/nose when he's 100% zipped up) was getting gross & dirty (his fault - not the coat's). So I figured I'd wash it. I followed the instructions to a T - gentle, cold, tennis ball in the dryer. First of all, it took 3 spin cycles to get the water out of it - it was like a giant sponge! I had to physically ring it out so it was light enough for my washer to finish the job (have never had this happen before with anything). After drying, I was unpleasantly surprised - some of the outside stitching looked worn out, and the down did NOT redistribute - so there are areas in the coat that are empty, and other areas that have a ton of down. It won't keep him warm anymore!!! I would not recommend that you machine wash this coat!

I already bought two of these, one for each son. They wear their clothes hard, and both coats have lasted beautifully. One looks good as new, even though it's two years old, and sometimes my son even sleeps in it. The first one I bought has lasted four seasons-- two for the older boy, and then another two for his younger brother. The zipper finally just broke, and yes, the down is shedding through a hole. But it has served us so well, for so long, no matter how rough and tumble the treatment. I looked at most of the more expensive brands for a replacement, but my son insisted we get the same one. It's super warm, super comfy (they love the fleece lining, and appreciate the fit of the hood), the pockets are deep, and the zipper works well and is good quality. My boys LOVE this coat. They can wear it over their basketball uniform in 0* and they're still content. I just bought another one, and hope the quality is the same.

Rated 4 out of 5 by ActiveTwinBoys Good Coat but Poor Hood Zipper
I have twin 6 year olds who both received this coat for Christmas. It's very warm and has worked well. We followed the size chart which suggested they need size large, which was perfect despite the fact they wear size 6 in most other clothing and size small in shirts. While I am overall pleased with the coats, I am very disappointed with the plastic hood zipper. Little boys are active, and one tug on his brother's hood broke the cheap plastic zipper. The zipper really needs to be sturdier plastic or metal. And as suggested by others, some of the small feathers do escape the lining.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Dkwangok Great coat for price
This is the 3rd winter coat I've bought for my 7 year old son from LLBean. You can't get better quality coat for this price anywhere else, The quality of their kids outdoor clothes are excellent. We love everything about the jacket except the fuzzy liner often gets caught in the zipper. It's easy enough to fix but still a bit of a hassle. Otherwise it's a great coat.

We got the boys down jacket in grey with an orange in line, at the beginning of September. By the end of December my ruff and tumble 10 year old had already gotten a rip in the front of the jacket, with feathers flying everywhere I had to tape it until I could return it. Its a great warm jacket and fits well, but for my kids active life style it just couldn't hold up to our standards.

This jacket sheds feathers like crazy - my son is full of them whenever he takes the jacket off. The fleece lining on the collar is dirty and matted after one month of regular wear (and washing didn't help!). Very disappointed - there are many brands I would expect this quality from, and LLBean is not one of them.

We just received this last week and my 5 year old son has worn it 3x in the snow. He has stayed warm and dry and LOVES the fuzzy material on the inside. I gave him the choice to pick out which coat he wanted and he immediately went for the blue plaid. I agree with another reviewer. It is so hard to find boys coats that aren't plain and boring. Paired with LL Bean snow pants this is going to keep my son warm all winter!

Rated 4 out of 5 by m3n4gd95 great coat, many positive feature you dont see in
Yes, you can see the feathers through the outer shell when you look closely. My guess is that it will look worse when it gets wet. But it has so many terrific qualities that outweigh the one negative....especially for a boys everyday winter coat. The fit is great, the warmer cuffs, the detachable hood, the fuzzy fleece inside the zipper make this a wonderful value. I will wait til the first snow to speak as to its water resistance.

I ordered this jacket for my grandson, and the fit and color were great. However, the material looked like it had oil or grease spots on the inside of it, and could be seen clearly on the outside. Called and ordered another one, and again you could see black marks. I finally gave up on this jacket and ordered another type of jacket from LLBean and I hope it doesn't have the same problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by lovingllbeanmw Great jacket
I had viewed this jacket online and was scared by some previous reviews until we finally visited the store and both my husband and I were sold by this jacket. It is great quality and while we've yet to try it out in the snow, we've had some cold days and our son has been nice and warm. I like the idea of down, as my outerwear also has down and I'm never cold. The sleeves have a soft fleece extension on the inside to keep out any snow. The inside of the jacket is a soft fuzzy material. The only thing I think would be an improvement would be a waist snow guard. It really doesn't matter as we purchased a pair of navy snow bibs. The pattern is very sweet and looks good. I often find most patterns are very tiring to look at, especially for boys. This one is sweet!
