Rated 1 out of 5 by Glau Like everyone else - Broken laces
Shoes seem to be good quality, but like almost everyone else has stated the laces are a very weak point. My son's broke after about 2-3 months, and he was not hard on them. The stitching near the front also let loose, so there was a big hole. We shipped them back and won't be buying another pair.

These shoes wear the best out of any shoes I ever purchased for my son. The only reason that they do not get 5 stars is because of the laces. I really wish that LL Bean would change these to be the tie laces or make these thicker.

Rated 4 out of 5 by MaryNH Great durable kid shoe, but not durable laces
My very active 6 year old son wears these shoes everyday. They are comfortable and have great tread that doesn't wear away. They are also a nice looking go-to shoe for school, backyard, or hiking. The only flaw is the toggle shoe laces, which break before the shoe even begins to show much wear. I have to hand it to LL Bean though, because I have now returned 4 pairs (yes, 4) due to broken laces and each time was sent a new pair. Between April 2014 and June 2015 we have seen 4 pairs returned and replaced. That's an average of a 4 months shoe lace lifespan. At my last order I requested the replacement shoes be in the next size up and a different color. No problem. And no extra cost to me. So, if we continue the way we are with replacing these shoes due to faulty laces, and LL Bean being so accommodating, my son will be wearing these Shock Mocs through high school!

Rated 4 out of 5 by CampingMom Shoes are great, toggle, not so much
Ordered these shoes in October, and by last month (May), the toggle isn't staying in place. Sending back for another pair via exchange...

I have bought many pairs of these Mocs for my older son over the years, and I loved them because they were so sturdy, durable, and comfortable, and I still have the older versions to pass down to my younger son. My son didn't want any other shoes, so he wore them nearly every single day, and the soles are still good! I like the design and color selections and the slightly wider toe box.
HOWEVER, the pairs I've bought in the past couple of years for both my older and younger sons have a KEY FLAW. They've changed the laces from nylon elastic to cotton laces covered in nylon. I'm guessing they did this so the laces wouldn't spring back and hurt little fingers. But this means that the laces wear down, the covering comes off at the pressure points, and breaks long before the kids outgrow them. Both of the most recent pairs I bought for my kids have had one of the laces break. This is a problem. I hope L.L. Bean will fix this. Until then, I don't know if I'll be purchasing any more.

Rated 2 out of 5 by adventuremom2 great shoe but it doesn't hold up!
My son and I were both excited about these shoes and bought a pair last fall before school started. By Christmas he already had broken the laces off one shoe and we had kept trying to tie it together so he could keep wearing them. Finally I couldn't tie them anymore so I returned them and got the same shoes just thinking maybe it was my kid being too rough on them but the same thing happened within a month this next time. We have finally reached the point where I can't tie up the elastic lace to make them work anymore. We're so bummed but I just don't want to keep exchanging these every 6 months for another pair! Elastic laces are great but only when they actually stretch and not break. Maybe they shouldn't be sewn in in the middle so they could be easily replaced?

Rated 4 out of 5 by SheilaFromBama Slightly narrow
Besides being slightly narrow the laces are flimsy. The shoe itself seems comfortable enough-my grandson is autistic and unable to testify to that! But to tighten the laces one must pull on them a bit, and each time I do, I think they will break this time. The shoe itself seems substantial for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lisant Great shoe for active boys
My son knows how to burn through shoes. Other name brands will last maybe 2 months before they're falling apart. Although those cost more, they are poorly made. These shoes last around 4 months and it's usually the stitching at the toe that comes loose before any wear on the soles occurs. We have not had any problems with the laces breaking but then again he just pulls them on and doesn['t mess with them too much.
I am about to order our 3rd pair. I think we've found his "forever shoe"... they are comfortable and durable and a great price.

by MsCC Needs a bungee-lace redesign
So, other than the laces....these shoes are great. This is the second pair of these shoes to fail due to the laces. I just don't want to have to return them every couple of months. We wanted a bungee lace shoe for my son. They appear to be failing where the lace rubs against the plastic eyelet at the top of the shoe. The laces do not have enough elasticity and are a bit on the thin side.
I have had bungee-laces on many of my own athletic shoes and sport sandals but they are usually much sturdier/thicker and a lot more elastic-stretchy.
LL Bean has a great policy of standing behind their products and that is why we keep coming back. My suggestion to LL Bean would be to improve this shoe with better quality bungee laces. Thanks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Jandrezz Great quality, except the laces
I was tired of buying my 5 year old new shoes every 6 weeks because the sole separated from the canvas in the toe area. These shoes would be in the $15-$20 range, so I thought I'd up the price range a bit in the hopes of getting something higher quality. Also, LL Bean has a reputation for an excellent return policy.
These shoes were initially awesome. Very comfortable and cute. My 5 year old wears them every day and believes they make him as fast as a cheetah. They're easy for him to slip on himself.
However, as many other reviewers mentioned, the laces are the downfall of these shoes. After daily wear for about 6 weeks, one of the laces broke. However, the rest of the shoe is in excellent shape, no separation of the soles at all (which has usually been our problem). Fortunately, it's true that LL Bean has world-class customer service; they sent replacements via two day shipping at no charge to us.
It is disappointing that the laces snapped so quickly, and that the laces can't be replaced separately. It should be noted that my son doesn't do anything with the laces (eg, doesn't tighten them or anything, just slips his foot in). I'll keep replacing these when the laces snap but I don't think I'll buy them in the next size up unless the lace problem is fixed.
