I originally ordered my normal size, M (am 5'7", 145 lb), but found the top a bit too snug. Re-ordered in Black, L, & now have quite a roomy fit - enough to wear a blazer or thick sweater underneath - ideal for where I live. I had no difficulty whatsoever with the zipper on either coat I ordered. Cuffs are a touch loose for me on the Large, but can live with that. Overall, I find this coat high quality, very warm & soft, fantastic length for cold weather, & I love the extra detailing, like the heavy-duty ribbon sewn alongside the zipper, to keep it from snagging on fabric. Would have given 5 stars if there were a detachable hood. In any case, I think this will be a wonderful coat to have when the cold weather hits again.

I received exactly what I expected: a lightweight but warm winter coat with a clean, slim line without a hood to blow around or off of my head in the Chicago wind.
I am 5'4'' and 110 pounds and the XS Regular hits at the top of my knees. This size, rather than a Petite size, changes the line/look of the coat slightly but I made that compromise for the extra warmth.
Other customers have referenced the zipper....mine is fine and I would just say that I have to put on my reading glasses and take a deep breath to work the zippers correctly on ALL my winter coats.

I read the other reviews and ordered it anyway because it looked perfect. It's only a zipper -- how hard could it be? The answer: impossible. I might have considered keeping it anyway because it WAS exactly what I wanted... but it was defective as well. The zipper wasn't sewn straight (even if you could get it zipped), the hem was sewn so crookedly that there was a three-inch tail hanging down, and there was a snag in the fabric. What is happening to LL Bean?
It also frosts me that I have to pay to return a defective item. This is the second time this month I've had to return something to them, not for fit or preference, but because it was defective. So I'm out $13 and have nothing to show for it.

I bought this for a trip to NYC in February and was so glad I did, as our arrival coincided with a major blizzard. I am happy to say it performed beautifully and looked great because of the fitted cut and simple stitching. The length was longer than expected?the medium was knee length for my 5'6". Yes, the zipper was frustrating. Sometimes it zips easily in one shot, other times I struggled, which is the reason for the 4 star rating. Still, I love the coat and would recommend it.

I ordered both this coat AND the Microsuede Quilted Down Coat at the same time. Both were comfortable and fit well, but I chose the 'warm and light' in dark violet, because my neighbor said the down coat in dark mushroom made me look "washed out." I am 5'4" and 135 lbs, and the regular medium fits well. It hits just below my knee. Great coat!

This is warm, good looking, and lightweight. But, please, the zipper!
Why can't Beans make a coat with a zipper that does not require a 5-minute struggle to align properly so the coat can be zipped closed? It really tarnishes an otherwise terrific product.

I wore the coat the day after it arrived (quickly, as usual). The small fits perfectly and the length is good. I'm 5' 6.5", 118 lbs. I was a little hesitant reading about the zipper since I had to send back a raincoat because I couldn't get the zipper to work. I ordered another raincoat just the same and the zipper was fine. I think I am double zipper challenged. I ordered the purple rather than one of my "safe" colors and love it. As others said, a detachable hood would have been nice.

For warmth, this is fantastic. Double zip, pockets, wonderful. Plenty of room in the arms for layers.
But the top is too tight & the bottom too big. Very disappointed to send back

I bought this coat in Flint, a warm, neutral light gray -- light enough to be seen in the dark, Petite Large - my usual size -- fit perfectly, knee length on me, and I usually wear it every day. It is lightweight enough for California but warm when needed. Washes beautifully, too.
