This is a "grown up" backpack for smaller kids, made of the same rugged materials as their adult backpacks (dernier nylon). On sale, the price is close to the much smaller (and cheaper appearing/feeling) Jr. backpack (for school). We wanted something the kids could use on hikes and adventures around the house. The layout is better than the school pack as there is a large central compartment surrounded by 4 smaller (but still capacious) pockets. Perfect for snacks, water bottle, compass, whistle, etc. Got the Berry color because it was on sale and were pleasantly surprised by how much nicer it looked in person. Highly recommend for kids (and smaller adults).

I am reviewing this rucksack for casual daily use. I use it to transport basic things I need for biking to work: a 13" Macbook Air, my lunch, an extra sweater, some notebooks, and other miscellany. I am a petite 5'2" woman, and although I was initially hesitant about purchasing such a small backpack, it turned out to be the perfect size for my daily use (I also ordered a Continental Rucksack to compare, and that one is way too enormous on me). ~1100 cu. inches (~18 liters) may seem small on paper, but it fits my frame much more comfortably than my old 30 liter backpack ever did, yet holds everything I need. The side pockets are indeed rather small, but perfectly sized to hold bike tools in one, and first aid supplies in the other. The waist straps conveniently tuck into the back panel if you decide not to use them. In particular, I want to note that the laptop/water bladder compartment is very impressive, since it is slightly elevated above the bottom of the rucksack and prevents accidental damage to a laptop whenever the rucksack is placed heavily or dropped onto a surface. I don't know if this feature was intentionally designed for laptops, or if it serves a more pragmatic outdoors-equipment's purpose, but for my use it is an amazingly thoughtful feature. And my laptop fits very comfortably; I can see all laptops 13" or fewer fitting comfortably, regardless of their thickness.
The one complaint I have, like those of previous reviewers, is that the main compartment draw cord doesn't cinch shut by a long shot, but it doesn't matter for my purposes (and kind of makes sense, given that the back of the pack is stiff. I do agree that it would have been better if they had mimicked the side pockets and used a thinner material to extend the main compartment, and then put a drawstring through that), and I'm confident that the top hatch will keep everything dry during precipitation.

Just exchanged an old campus bag for this newer version. Wow, LLBean took back a pack purchased around 1995 and gave me 39.00 towards this pack. I was planning on getting the $79 larger Rucksack, but this one does fit me well and I am 5'8. Planning on mostly short walks, and use for trip out to Co by car to hold shoes and socks. Like the cobalt blue color which also was less expensive, on sale from $49 to 45.00. Other colors, same size, was $59.00. Therefore, I only paid $6.00
So, for now on, I only plan on using LLBean for my packs and outdoor gear. Customer service is great at the Freehold store.

While it appears to be of good construction, the product description on line clearly says it has an interior sleeve that will hold a laptop. Simply put, it will not. It might hold an ipad or similar tablet but is way too small for even a 'normal' laptop. I will be returning it and now scrambling to find a pack for my trip. :-(

Rated 5 out of 5 by InksterArtGirl Great for smaller framed & short people!
I originally ordered the regular sized LL Bean Rucksack but I felt it was too long for my torso, even with many adjustments. I am only 5 foot 3 inches and weight 125 pound and although my torso is 3 inches longer than what this rucksack is recommended, it fits me great! So glad LL Bean was willing to send this model while I still held on to the larger Rucksack. I was then able to try on one at a time to truly get a good feel for the fit. This model is just as high quality in the materials as the larger model. The only change is the waist strap is not as wide. That is no problem for me, but if you do like to tighten the waist belt pretty tight some adults might find it cuts in. This is my first backpack purchase in over 20 years and I am very happy with my purchase. Great model for carrying your laptop or pad, but I will be carrying a sketch pad along! Thanks again, LL Bean. Fine products and I also appreciate the help when I called to order this item.

I am very happy with this purchase of the Continental S Rucksack. I bought it as a bug-out bag...did find it small for what I needed it for and as I am a small woman..it fits perfectly on my frame size. The only thing is I'm a woman with a waist and the belt couldn't fit me. But no problem anyways since I could tuck it in on the sides (nice feature) and the shoulder straps was still comfortable without the waist straps.
I love the squared look of the bag versus all the other hiking/camping bags as I'm an organizer freak, and don't like just shoving things in. I also love the color, Sea Holly, and the pricing! Beautiful bag. Very well made, too.... I don't intend to use the inside pocket for a laptop...but you never know as I have many electronic gadgets. Love the inside pocket that can carry your IPhone and it has earphone cord slots going through the bag. Cute (I'm into cuteness...)
I think I will order the larger Rucksack for my bug out bag, no matter. Need it bigger but will pass this one to my daughter who is a minimalist. She can't wait to have it...she's already taking my things out of this bag. :)
Thanks, LL Bean for your high quality items. I've bought your ergonomic bags years ago and they are still beautiful, well made and has traveled all over the US' airports. Especially Hawaii...where my family resides.
