I frequently conduct visits to job sites outside of the office. Often time, I am in an unfamiliar setting and don't know if there will be a microwave for me to use. I purchased this food container and am so grateful. It keeps the hot food hot and cold food cold. The trick is that you must prepare the container in advance. If I plan to use this as a hot food container, I pour hot water in the container and cover it for 15 minutes (I heat water in a coffee cup and in the microwave for 90 seconds). Afterward, I reheat my food on the stove at medium low. I prefer reheating on the stove because it heats the food evenly. My favorite hot foods to put in this container are spaghetti, chili, and curry. When using as a cold food container, I insert ice cubes and water for 15 minutes and cover. I leave my food in the refrigerator until the timer rings. My favorite cold foods: Japanese somen noodles and salads. I also place dressing in one of those tiny Tupperware containers and store with the salad/noodles. After six hours, the food is the right temperature. Once, I didn't have enough time to finish my entire meal. I covered it and went on with my day. I opened it two hours later, and the food was still warm. One might think that taking the extra step of heating/cooling the container for 15 minutes is inconvenient, but the time goes by quickly. I make breakfast for my children and pack lunches, so the time goes by so fast.

It keeps my salads cold in the summer, and my soup hot in the winter. Cleans very easy, and scraping with steel scouring pad will eliminate odors. The smaller one fits nicely in lunch coolers and boxes. The engraving is a nice touch that resolves any territorial disputes.

Rated 5 out of 5áby Derya 9-oz container keeps food warm for school kid
My son has used the container a few times now for his school lunch. Compared to the old thermos we had before, this is a huge improvement. It keeps food warm after 4-5 hours and does not leak. I warm it with boiling water for about five minutes before I put hot food. I have not used it for keeping things cool. The handle is very handy and he (6-year old) can open the can without any issues.
The LLBean customer service has been excellent -- efficient and effective.

Rated 5 out of 5áby SunbeltGirl Nice thermos that keeps the food warm for hours!
I sent my 8th grader to school with this full of homemade macaroni and cheese. He leaves at 7 and does not have lunch until noon. I'm happy to report that 5 hours later his food was still very warm and he was thrilled.
We've tried two other thermos bottles and neither of them kept his food warm like this one.
The reviews are right. This is an awesome insulated food container.

I purchased this for my 5 year old son when his started Kindergarten. I wanted him to be able to open his own lids. His hands could not grip the lids of the Funtainers.
With the LLBean Food container, he opens his own container with the ergo lid. Food stays warm. Durable.
The school year is almost over and he loves it.

I have bought and tried more thermoses than I care to count, especially because they aren't cheap! My kids have always complained the same thing, can't eat the food because it turned cold, even after letting it sit with boiling hot water for about 1/2 hour before I filled with piping hot food. I read the reviews and because of LL Beans generous return policy, bought the 9oz to try. I have not been disappointed. My son said the food is steaming hot when he goes to use for his school lunch. The size is perfect, fits a normal bowl-serving size amount of food. I will now be purchasing 2 more for my other kids.

Rated 5 out of 5áby SUPmom Great at keeping food hot!
Does a great job of keeping food hot! I use it daily for my daughter's lunch - she says her food is still steaming when she opens it 5 -6 hours after I've packed it. Preheating is a MUST and making sure it's full helps too (add a ball of aluminum foil if it's not going to be full of food).

Rated 5 out of 5áby olliebob Great product...
This is a great thermal food container. I preheat it for a few minutes with hot water from my Keurig, before adding the piping hot food. After 5 hours, the food is at a perfect temperature for eating. We have the 9 oz. size, which is perfect for my pre-K girl for lunch. Larger eaters might want the 14 oz. size. Don't buy larger than what you actually need, since partially filled thermoses don't keep food as hot as a totally filled one. We also own a Foogo thermos, but it doesn't work nearly as well as this one. I also like that this LL Bean container has a wider mouth.

Rated 5 out of 5áby smalldogwalker keeps cold
Keeps food very cold longer when I put 3 or 4 ice cubes in first; even next day the cubes haven't completely melted at the bottom. Try it, you'll like it.

Rated 5 out of 5áby ramboralph It keeps food warm! And, cold as well!
I teach. After 5 hours, it is still warm. It is important to pre-treat the the container with hot water. I've learned to like my other vacuum containers with foldable spoons which would be a plus.
