Overall it is a nice bag with some well placed pockets, etc. However, I can suggest some significant improvements. The retracting name tag is a total waste of space to me. Instead, an open top pocket where one could put plane tickets and ID's while going thru airport security would be really handy on that side of bag.
Also wish bag had two padded handles. Instead it has one plain handle that must be attached inside the other handle to have a padded handhold. That means one cannot quickly get into one side of bag without opening the handle thing and separating the handles.
The slide thru for attaching case to a rolling suitcase works great.

Definitely a keeper. This is the best briefcase for travel that I have found. Lots of space and lots of pockets that are well thought out. Well made. The slot on the back that slides over the handle of your carry on luggage keeps the briefcase secure and stable. I just made my first business trip with this bag and am thrilled with it. I expect to put a lot of miles on this one.

This is a much lighter weight bag than my old one. Many spaces for organizing plus a spot for the laptop and any paperwork necessary. I'll be using this bag as a second piece of luggage.

I've had this bag / briefcase for 6 months, black with grey stitches. There is a pocket for everything: MacBook, iPad, iPhone, pens, sunglasses, legal pads / files, meds, everything you can think of. One of my favorite zip pockets is the cloth lined pocket for sunglasses & eye glasses. There are also cloth lined sleeves for tablets and phones within a section. Everything has its own place in the bag. I love it.
The one downside to the briefcase is the shoulder strap, it constantly slides off the shoulder. However any should strap will work on this bag and I got one from another e-retailer.
Even with the shoulder strap being what it is, I still give the briefcase a 5 star rating. I don't know how I managed before this bag. I'm much more organized and efficient with this bag in my life.
Thanks LL Bean!

I have a 20 year old LLBean bag that I used as a briefcase for work. The old bag was designed before laptops/tablets/cell phones became common. This new commuter briefcase has specific storage for these items as well as for their associated cables and chargers. It also is designed for easy access to everything without opening a main flap. It has a large main compartment to store bulkier items. The only thing it lacks is a water bottle holder as was noted by a previous reviewer.

Bought this for my husband who takes the train into work everyday. He said it holds everything his old one did, except he wishes it had a side mesh pocket for his travel coffee mug. The insides are padded in many places so your laptop and cell phone will be safe. We bought the one with the yellow color on the zippers (because it was cheaper) and he said he likes that one better than the all black.
His other one lasted years, so we'll see how long this one will hold up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Hollywood Great bag for work & Travel
This bag works great for my double duty - work and casual. It has numerous pockets to hold small items such as pens, business cards and paper for work travel. It also has other pockets to hold snacks and similar items when I travel alone or with my family. The laptop sleeve holds my 15 inch laptop with room to spare. The lined sleeve beside it is more than large enough for my Kindle Fire. I like the lined external pocket for my phone and glasses.
Two items I miss and think would make the bag even better - a key holder inside (I don't need to carry keys to my personal when traveling with a rental car) and a larger zipper on the front pocket (this large pocket would be perfect for boarding passes if it had a long horizontal zipper).
Overall - a well designed bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TJinDC Best LL Bean Briefcase Option
I have been using the LL Bean Sportsman's Deluxe Briefcase for several years now. The clip holding the strap ALWAYS breaks in about 6 months, but I have a way of rigging it so it is still usable. I decided to try a different Bean briefcase this time. Much to my dismay, there was something critically wrong with just about every case, messenger bag, etc. sold by Bean including ripping, clasps that unbuckle, WAY too heavy, etc, etc. I finally came across this Commuter Briefcase. Whoa! No complaints!? In addition, I could see that the clasp holding the strap appeared to be heavier duty than that found on the Sportsman's deluxe. Well, only been using this one for about a month, but it is great. It holds a 15.6 inch laptop with no problem. There are plenty of pockets -- all of a useful size and logically designed, the strap is sturdy, there is a pad on the strap, etc. These were all problems with all of the other briefcases, which seem to have been solved with this Commuter Briefcase. I highly recommend it.

I have had a number of briefcases over the years, of varying types and prices. This is my favourite. It has lots of space and ways to organize things, and it is also tough, not too bulky, looks good, and is well-priced. I like it so much that I'm purchasing a second one for organizing one of my hobbies!
