I am now 51 years old and have been shopping with Bean since 10 years old. The quality just keep getting better and better and the product line is first rate, which is why my grandchildren love all Bean products, judging by how frequent they raid my closet and request bean items for Christmas.

The Sport pack for my son is great. It is very well made, roomy and durable for an 8 yr old boy. I'm sure he will get plenty of wear & tear from it. Three out of our 4 children have LLBean packs & they are well worth their price! 100% Guarantee was a big seller for me as well.

This pack fits my tall 1st grader perfectly; it's durable and just the right size. Monogramming was completed quickly and looks great.

My 4th grade daughter LOVES this bag. First, it fits so well to her small frame and she loves all the compartments. She likes to hook lots of fun things to her bags, so this gave her plenty of room. The front compartment and pocket are deep and fits pencils straight up perfectly! We definitely give this bag an A+++

Great backpack. Purchased for my 7 year old nephew and it's the perfect size for him. The quality is obvious, plenty of pockets, and good zippers. He did ask me why the straps are so wide, and I explained they are thick and padded so it doesn't hurt his shoulders. Nice backpack.

by BuckeyeBrood Fantastic backpack for older elementary kids!
My 8 year-old son chose this backpack in the bright blue "blue jay" color. It's just as vibrant in person as the website depicts (yet it's not too bright that it will get filthy easily).
The backpack fits his small 48 lb. frame nicely with room to grow. As the photo shows, standard-size folders and notebooks fit inside with plenty of room to spare. The red backpack pictured on the right is the Discovery Backpack, shown for size comparison (it's slightly smaller).
The middle zipper pocket is perfect for organizing smaller accessories like pencils, a small pad of paper for doodling on the bus, tissues, rubber snakes, rocks from the playground, etc.
The small exterior pocket is quite tall and narrow but could prove quite useful for winter gloves. Bean's flip-top water bottle fits well in the side mesh pockets. My only concern is that the large mesh pocket on the front will get snagged easily at school (such as on the bricks of the building).
Since I have an embroidery machine with a free-arm, I personalized my son's backpack myself (he wanted metallic thread). In case it helps, you can use a small metal-frame embroidery hoop with sticky stabilizer and temporary spray adhesive to hold the bag in place during stitching. Or, just let LL Bean personalize it (though I'm not certain where they place the name/initials).

Rated 4 out of 5 by HoustonCarKidsMom Depth from top to bottom varies a lot
I was looking for a backpack similar in size/capacity to the Original Book Pack, but with outside pockets for water bottles. OBP is 1404 sq in. This is 1350 sq in. So I tired it.
I found what another reviewer said, that it narrows at the top. For clarification, the interior depth of the bag in the main compartment - where binders, textbooks go - is about 5.5" at the base/bottom of the bag, but only just slightly over 3" in depth at the top. So the interior is not a rectangle or a rectangle with rounded corners.
Depending on your needs, it may work for you. But it wasn't what I was looking for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Litehiker1 Perfect day hike pack
I bought and returned probably 20 packs before finding this one. I needed a day hiking pack that could also work for other things like a seat bag on a flight or for a quick bike trip to the library. The perfect features this pack has that were so hard to find all together in other packs are as follows: 1. It stands up on its own. Why would you want a pack that falls over when you put it down. 2. It has no hip belt. Not needed for a pack this size. It is always comfortable even when fully loaded. 3. No compression straps all over the place. Again, not needed on a pack this size. 4. Perfect amount and placement of pockets/compartments. 5. Lightweight. A day pack shouldn't start at 3 pounds empty. 6. No zipper flaps to get stuck in the zipper. Zippers are beefy and work smoothly every time. A rain cover or small trash bag is more effective anyway. 7. Shallow depth. One doesn't look like a pack mule when wearing the pack. Will be buying two more to put away for the future as I have found my perfect day pack.
