Rated 4 out of 5 by Longridehome Hand Warmer Pockets an Issue
I think that llbean must be making their coats larger than in the past. I have a barn coat that I purchases quite a few years ago that is a medium and it fits perfectly. This coat in a small is actually a little on the large size for me. The reason for only four stars is that I don't like the hand warmer pockets located so high in the jacket. It's an odd angle and the extra material used to create them just adds extra bulk around the middle of the jacket which I don't really need. It's not as flattering as it could be without these pockets. If they were lower, perhaps behinde the front pockets, than the fit could be smoother and the pockets would provide a more relaxed and comfortable position to place my hands when needed. The corduroy is very soft and other than the pocket issue I'm happy with this jacket.

Rated 3 out of 5 by BlueOwl Great coat, poor cut
I was really excited to get this coat at a great sale price but sadly it really is way too big. I usually wear L/XL and even with a big sweater underneath the L is too big for me. The cut is also a bit disappointing. The shoulders are very slouchy and the cut too boxy. In the pictures it looks a little fitted in the waist but it is a wide, straight cut. The fabric is beautiful and it is well made but I'm pretty sure I'll be sending it back because of the poor fit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Irishfolly The fit of this coat didn't work for me.
I looked forward to getting this coat at a wonderful sale price, but alas, it didn't fit me well. The quality, fabric, and warm lining were so nice, but this coat was very big and bulky around the mid section. It was like there was extra fabric that made it ballooned out. A real disappointment as the coat was otherwise well-made. So, it's going back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Beanie7 I miss the long version
Years ago I bought this coat in a long version. I love it. A few years later you started making it with a removable liner. My intention was to buy a new one with the liner, but you stopped making them before I got around to it. My unlined version is still going strong, but I'd like to get a new one (with lining). I wish you would start making the long barn coats again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NorthernCalBeanShopper Love this coat!
Roomy enough for a pretty chunky sweater underneath. I find that sleeves are often a bit skinny for me in LL Bean clothes, but not the case with this jacket. I considered getting the XL to allow for this, but most reviews said that it ran big, so I went with the L. Glad I did. I'm 5'6", and the coat comes to mid-thigh. I wear a 12 in LLB pants, and a L in tops, and the L in this coat fits just how I wanted it to--loose, but not too baggy. The pockets on the sides unbutton to put keys or whatever in, and there are hand warming pockets hidden on the seam of the torso, which is useful. Flannel lining is soft, but the sleeves are lined with a soft but slippery quilted material so your sweater sleeves don't get hung up when you put it on. The corduroy is very soft and the navy is a beautiful shade of blue--very rich looking. It's been unusually cold in Northern California lately, and this coat has been put to good use already. I wish I could buy another one to store away for the future, because LL Bean always seems to discontinue the things I love best. But anyway--buy this coat!

Rated 5 out of 5 by LadyHiker101 I don't understand how this coat could be on sale.
I have no idea why these coats have been slashed in price. I've bought FOUR, two before they went on sale.
I describe myself as a young Senior that enjoys taking walks all over the City. This coat is a coat I can be proud and comfortable to be seen in walking through my neighborhood or into a very nice cafe I may pass on the way and want to stop for coffee or lunch. It is so beautiful that it encourages me to get out and walk. If I get asked out for coffee, as I am a Senior single, I very confidently wear this coat. It makes a great first impression on a blind date. Now, that says a lot--coming from a former, very picky NYC model.
This is the most comfortable coat I have ever worn. You could sleep in it. To me, it feels like I'm wearing a nice housecoat. Sometimes when I don't want to turn the heat up in the house so quickly, I use the coat for just that, a housecoat. When I go outside, the beautiful navy blue color and stylish details always turn heads. People just excuse themselves as they reach over to feel the fabric. I have the same reaction with the coat in beige.
I haven't had any problems with the faux suede collar and cuffs. If they were made of real suede, like many manufacturers thoughtlessly incorporate into such a piece, the coat couldn't be washed but would have to be sent to a cleaner. There the cleaner would proceed to charge lots extra for the mixed fabric piece, and then ruin the coat because real suede trim just doesn't clean well with wool or cotton. Further, I've had every suede coat I've ever owned destroyed when it has been cleaned. It turns stiff no matter what expert I take the piece to. So, I have NO complaints about the suede not being real. And yes, it is a 100% cotton faux suede so you don't have to worry about it acting like an oil base product which could melt on you or worse if you should reach over a heat source.
I'm 5'5," 34 bust, 125 lbs, 37" hips. The Small fits perfectly; there is enough room for me to wear a thick sweater. There is plenty of shoulder room to feel comfortable doing any outside activity--even winter tennis. The style is classic, beautiful, very feminine, and not overly and inappropriately tight fitting, but tasteful, and in keeping with the design intent of the coat.
When I go for a walk, there is so much expandable pocket space that I can carry keys, credit cards, money, sun glasses, gloves, reading glasses (if I want to read a newspaper at the coffee shop). There's even space enough for small purchases I may pick up during a walk. I can carry an expandable LL Bean nylon shopping bag in one of the front pockets and usually do. The fuller the front pockets, the more interesting the coat becomes--the same effect that simply wearing a camera around your neck creates. Remember Captain Kangeroo's pockets? If you can't, google him. If the coat's pockets are empty, the ingenious pleats in them allow the pockets to lay back down perfectly flat. The side pockets are deep and roomy enough to keep my hands warm even without gloves in the event I've left home without them.
Oh, finally I am not a person to take time to write reviews. For these coats, I will. That's how much I love them and want LLBean to continue them. As I said, I don't know why these coats are even on sale. A bad review by one person? I don't get it. For me they are a well-kept secret at the sale price, but not one I want kept if it means they are discontinued.
The coat is not for someone who wanst to look like they've been poured into it along with everything else they wear. It's classy, a classic coat--one Jackie O would have worn on her walks along the East River in Manhatten. She would have worn it with a simple scraf around her head along with her dark sun glasses.

Rated 2 out of 5 by FirewoodChopper False representation, too bad.
Online it says this coat is cotton corduroy and cotton flannel lining. I was pleased because I need a natural material coat for work. It wasn't until after I ordered that I found out the sleeves are made of synthetic material. Why ruin a coat in this manner? I'm returning it. (Any synthetic exposed to heat or flame will melt, not burn.) Anyone who works closely to extreme heat should avoid this product and consult customer service to get the full details on their products and whether or not they really are "100% cotton".
Quality wise, this coat was very nicely constructed. Note, I did order down two sizes (M to an XS). I put it on just to see before I packed it up for the return, and from the brief moment it was on, it fit nicely. For someone who doesn't plan on being near open flame, this may be a nice coat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by SandHillGarden Barn Coat--for Town or Country?
The other reviews seem to ignore that this coat is specifically a barn coat--that is, meant to be worn in a barn, while doing chores. That is why it runs large--in a barn you want something roomy you can move in and layer more clothes under, with pockets to store stuff in. Not to show off your figure, and not for town. That said, for the barn it is wonderful, although if I had my druthers the corduroy would be heavier and the flannel lining thicker. It is so well made, it almost seems too fine to wear in the barn. However, that is what I bought it for, and I love it. It feels great, and I ordered my usual size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by iowaliving Not Fitted
This is a really nice fall jacket. But it's not fitted with narrow arms, shoulders and chest, like many other jackets these days. I read other comments saying they sized down 1 or 2 sizes. I ordered my usual size according to the sizing chart for the chest, and this jacket fits just right. You can get a light sweater underneath. I've already tried it out and it's warm. The corduroy is so soft and the trim really looks like suede. It's a keeper for me. So glad to find a jacket that isn't tight fitting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by DogzMom Nice Coat but...
First impression upon receiving - beautiful blue color, soft corduroy, collar & cuffs looked like suede. I was excited!
Tried jacket on, & was very disappointed that it was made at least one size too large. I normally buy large/x large, depending on the brand - I'm 5'8 & 175lbs, but I could have moved the buttons over about 6" before it would fit properly. If you are tall, have a 48" bust & hips, this coat in size large would probably fit perfectly!!
I've reordered in a medium, so I'm hoping this will do the trick. Otherwise, very nice coat.
