Somehow, the materials and/or making of these shoes seemed flimsy compared with usual Bean's standards. I returned my pair.

It's been hard to find a good sturdy Oxford-style men's shoe lately. I've had these Monhegans for two months now and they are holding up well, good support, fit is right on, yet roomy enough for thick socks. Good traction on all surfaces. I've added a comfort insole, because after a long day on hard concrete floors at work my feet were aching. I was a little leery of the "blown rubber" sole, but they show no signs of wear and I wear them daily, not much "give" though. Hey, the laces even stay done up all day. Highly recommended if you're looking for a sturdy all-round shoe. I will definitely purchase another pair. I gave them only 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the all-day comfort issue, I think there has to be a bit of a trade-off between real sturdy and comfy soles.

The shoes are very comfortable, and can be worn with thick winter stockings. The nubuck finish requires only periodic saddle soaping and snowshoe waxing when necessary.

The shoes your inquiring about were too big. I don't have any tounge filler's so, I had to return them for another shoe. I received L L Beans shoes today and one's too short and the shoe laces don't close tightly when tightening the laces. I guess I'll have to re-order a wider pair. I sure wish the company would have more stock in the stores. Everytime I have to order something, because it's not in stock, I have to return 90% of whatI order.

Comfortable, and after two weeks a better fit than other LLB shoes that only come in medium and wide. I put in a thin insert for comfort and a better fit.
Good looking, and looks like they'll last a long time.

Had an older pair of this shoe with the regular finish. This model has an oil finish, so the leather is a little softer, but the shoe is more casual. Seemed to fit a little wider than normal, but within the acceptable range. A very comfortable shoe, great with jeans or khakis.

I loved my Brown Bears -- no longer available.
So I was elated to discover the Monhegan handsewn shoe. It is a most worthy successor, to my immense delight.
One caveat. My normal shoe size is 9.5 or 10. I ordered a 9.5 medium width. Too large, quite to my surprise.
I was apprehensive about ordering the size 9. But from the moment I tried it on I was 90% satisfied. YES, the shoe fit rather well. But even in the size 9 it is a mite loose, but I wouldn't think of returning them.
A message enclosed with the order advises that the shoe adjusts to the foot within a few days. I would say that within the margin of error that this is accurate.
I loved the look of the Monhegan handsewn shoe in the catalogue. And they feel eminently comfortable on my feet.

The shoes are just as Advertised. They are very comfortable and should stand pretty rugged duty. They are not for well dressed situations but fine for everyday use.
