This is NOT a review of the Fair Isle sweater (which was the only choice I was given), but of the Mid-Blue Heather sweater.
Shetland wool sweaters have become increasingly hard to find, for reasons unknown, and the problem with lambswool/merino/cashmere sweaters is that they pill badly and tend to stretch out of shape at the waist and cuffs.
That has not been a problem with the L.L. Bean Shetland sweater (although the cuffs were overly large out of the box), which I've been wearing regularly for the past four months. These sweaters are suitable for either true casual, with jeans, or dress casual, with slacks and a sport coat.
Were more colors, such as gray, burgundy, tan, and dark green available, I'd order them in a heartbeat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LongTimeFreeportfan Great fit at a great price
I bought this sweater in Navy a few weeks ago on a great daily mark-down sale. I was a bit hesitant based on some of the reviews but I can report that: the fit is fine and normal for LL Bean. I would err on the larger side if not sure. There was no odor whatsoever. It is a substantial material. I might classify it as an "outdoor sweater" although perfectly serviceable for indoors also. It's not soft, but certainly not the scratchy wool reported by some others. I would certainly recommend it for someone looking for a heavier weight sweater.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Clothingman Good Quality and Fit!
It's sometimes difficult to find a quality sweater in XXL size, but this sweater didn't disappoint. Shetland wool V-neck sweater fit me perfect and the wool has substantial weight to it that should last for many years to come. Yes, I would recommend this sweater to a friend.

I fully agree with my fellow New Yorker who cautioned about the excessive criticism of this sweater. I own several L.L. Bean sweaters, including a bulky Norwegian Birdseye-patterned sweater, two Commando sweaters, two Lambswool sweaters, and my all-time favorite...a 100% Cashmere sweater (in Black Spruce). They are all good quality and all are worth keeping. This Shetland Wool model, which I bought in a solid color (Black Coffee) was a great value (50% off retail price), is well-made and comfortable to wear. I am a very discriminating purchaser and have no qualms about returning an item that does not meet my expectations. This is a great sweater and I intend to keep it. I am very pleased with my purchasing decision and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a warm, solid-performing sweater, at the right price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LoneWriter Excellent sweater met every expectation
This review is for the solid Shetland V-neck, not the Fair Isle. I bought this sweater in Mid-Blue Heather and liked the it so much, I purchased two more in Navy and Gray Heather. I don't understand the negative reviews because I find this sweater to be neither itchy nor bulky, certainly no more rough than lambswool. I have no problems with this wool touching bare skin, but if you are very sensitive, consider Bean's merino or cashmere sweaters.
The Shetland sweater is densely knit, so it's quite warm and fairly wind/drizzle resistant. The only improvement I'd make is to have it be a little less trim through the torso, but I prefer classic (loose) cuts over the prevailing trim cuts these days. The wool does pill, but that's easily resolved with a sweater stone, and it couldn't be easier to wash. I turn it inside out, saturate it in cool water in the washing machine, let it agitate a maximum of 10 times using the "hand wash" cycle, let it soak an hour or so, rinse, spin, and dry flat. Looks as good as new. When it eventually becomes ratty or threadbare in the elbows, I'll wear it over a chamois or flannel shirt for fall yard work and expect it will keep me warm for many years to come.

I've learned in the past few years to be careful in letting the reviews that other customers write here infleunce me too much in making a decision about a potential purchase. When I was considering buying a Shetland sweater I was just about turned off by a couple of reviews stating that the Shetland sweater was itchy and/or bulky, but the many good reviews persuaded me to give it a shot. I am very happy that I did! The russet V-Neck that I purchased is neither itchy nor bulky and at 6 ft and 160 lbs,the medium fits me very nicely. The wool is not as smooth or light as the Bean Lambswool sweater,of which I have several, but it has a nice wool texture and is warmer. If you're looking for an attractive sweater to keep you warm, you won't go wrong with Bean's Shetland.I just ordered a Shetland Fair Isle V-Neck in navy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by NYWestSideShopper Shetland is not lambswool!
I don't think I have ever had a Shetland sweater before. I got this thinking it would be similar to the lambswool sweaters I have gotten previously from LLB (they were out of the color I wanted). It is not. I am sure it is very warm the the wool is very rough and not pleasant to even touch. So I am returning it and will await the lambswool weathers in the fall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by EastCoastSkier Great sweater, but can't get the right fit.
I purchased this sweater for a man only likes to wear 100% wool sweaters. I ordered a large, the size he normally wears, but the fit was too small. The sweater was exchanged for an extra large which is much too big. He loved the dark khaki sweater and was very disappointed. Sorry, I now have to return the extra large.
