Left shoe fits, right toe jammed up against toe box. These look like shoes that could take a beating, but I have two feet of the same size. I'll try Targhee Bryce in a 10 medium and pray for a good fit. At least the returns are easy.

I really wanted to like these shoes. I typically hike 350 to 400 miles per year and need reliable, comfortable shoes. I ordered them a half-size larger as per suggestions in the other reviews -- this turned out to be good advice.
It took about twenty hikes (~150 miles) to break them in. On the plus side, they are warm and waterproof and I have worn them in temperatures ranging from -10 F to 95 F and slogged through mud with no problem.
The problem is that these shoes literally started coming apart at the seams after about 25 uses, and after a year the rubber soles are separating from the uppers. The treads themselves are still in pretty good shape but the entire shoe is just falling to pieces. I expect I'll get another season out of them but I can't take the chance of having them self-disassemble while I'm out on the trails.
I have some LL Bean gear going back thirty years, back when LL Bean was synonymous with quality. I was pretty excited when the shoes showed up and was impressed with their weight, but that turned to disappointment when I realized these shoes are not meant for frequent hiking.
Don't expect to get more than a couple hundred miles out of these. If you intend to keep your shoes for many years, spend the extra $ and get something that will last.

I have just received my second pair of these shoes and am glad to see that LL Bean has chosen to keep a winner. I used the first pair for two years of day hikes, and international travel. The uppers and lining are in remarkable shape and if not for wearing the sole through to the mid sole, I would be wearing them still.
For the type of hikes I use them on, I often experience steep rocky trails or slickrock, deep ruts and short water crossings, nothing technical but not just walks in the park either. For travel, they have stood up to long days of walking city streets and cobblestones with no soreness issues the next day of wear.
The "waterproofness" is OK, not like wearing rubber boots, but in 40 years of hiking I can;t say that I have ever found a trully waterproof hiking boot. Last Spring my daughter and I hiked Zion in 6-inches of new snow and they did not appreciably wet-through. The support is excellent for a low shoe;I have never had a twist or sprain. Break-in is relatively easy and with the right sock, blister-less.
The wide size provides ample room in the toe-box (I take an EE shoe normally). For my first pair I bought my regular shoe size and had no complaints. For my second pair I sized up a half size to allow for a titch more swelling-room. I am not sure I really needed to do that.
With regard to the shoe-laces that some commentators have remarked on, I actually like them. They do not fray at the ends, and after two years they still look pretty good. Round laces always come undone, so just double tie them and you will have no problems.

Now they are on sale I might purchase another pair. That's how much I enjoy these.

Good fit but heavy and the way they're built makes my gait very awkward and uncomfortable and I'm returning the shoes for a refund.
It's difficult to describe, but it feels like a chore to take every step, as though I'm wearing weighted clown shoes, even though the fit is quite nice. I'm a backpacker and own and wear heavier footwear than these, but for whatever reason they're just not compatible with my foot and gait.

I tried to order the above shoes and was told the color I wanted was not on sale, but yet there it is advertised. What has happened to this once honorable company?

I would only recommend these shoes conditionally. Overall this is a good pair of shoes. However, like all of the LL Bean shoes I have bought over the last few years, it has an annoying design flaw. I don't remember when this started, but it could have been when they stated making shoes in China instead of the US. For the first year after you own the shoes, the shoe laces come untied on their own, just by walking around. I may have to retie my shoes several times a day. This lasts for about the first year, then it gradually stops. This may seem like a petty complaint, but I am getting a little tired of the same problem with every pair of shoes I buy.

I have purchased these twice for my son and his ever growing extra-wide feet. They fit well, they last, and they are attractive. And good price too!

I was wary about ordering them a 1/2 size to big but I did and can say it is the correct thing to do as they fit perfectly with the added 1/2 size.... Shoe could use a little more padding on sole other then that it is a very good product. Ben
