Rated 2 out of 5 by kaybee37 Could have been my favorite coat
This could have been my favorite coat except for one thing -- it has a very thin double zipper that goes down to my knees. I hate double zippers when they're thick -- this one is even worse because it's so thin. It's hard to get it zipped up, which kind of defeats the idea of having a nice warm wool coat that's longer and has a hood.
I don't understand why you would put a double zipper on this coat. I am going to save up my money and have a tailor remove it and put in a proper zipper. Then it will probably be my favorite coat.
I would have returned it, but we had a mild winter this year and by the time I got the chance to use it and found out what a pain it is, it was too late to return it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by LeAnnDorothy Great fit for me!
This coat served me very well over the colder months! I ordered a size up than what I would normally order, with the intention to be able to layer thick sweaters or a fur vest underneath, and it is a wonderful coat.
Ordered a size 12, I am 5'10'' 160lbs with a very large chest so the 12 fit fine for me. The cut is a bit boxy but when you button up the front it looks very cute. This is definitely not a fitted style. I would normally order an 8 or 10 but have issues with sleeve lengths/tight fits in the chest area. Size 12 solved all those problems for me, and it is a WARM coat!

I bought this coat last year and this is my second winter trying to wear it.
For reference, I'm 5'2" and weigh 110 lbs. I bought this coat in a petite size 4, the smallest offered. It's huge. The shoulders are like a linebacker, which causes my purse/gym bag to slide off during my whole commute via subway.
The sleeves are very wide, allowing lots of cold air in.
The hood is terrible. It's shaped so that it won't stay up for long, and when it is up, it obstructs about 70% of my vision. When it's down, it sags sadly over the shoulders, looks unkempt and further complicates my attempts to rest my bag over my shoulder.
The toggle material is vinyl, not leather, and looks cheap.
I give it two stars because the wool feels nice and the color #plum# is pretty. Other than that, this coat is a huge fail. Every time I wear it, I regret purchasing it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Techbrarian Nice Coat!
First L.L. Bean purchase. Ordered the purple. I'm 5'3" 160-170lbs usually size 12. Got a size 16 based on the reviews and size chart and it's good. Has a good few inches of room for layers. Probably could have gone petite since the arms are a bit long but didn't want to chance it fitting strangely as petites sometimes do in my experience. The zipper wasn't a problem for me but I'm experienced with dual zippers. Looks absolutely gorgeous. Just spent an hour shoveling my car out of the snow and was very hot toward the end so it does well. Love it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by ninag Tight fit, cheesy button detailing!
Unlike the other coat I bought, I couldn't get this xl buttoned up. Really tight sleeves, too. Pretty color but the plastic buttons and details looked really cheap. Sorry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Superb So glad I bought this..
I was hemming and hawing about buying this coat but then I tried it on in the store. I bought it online in a petite and I am SO glad I did. It is very warm but not bulky. It has a roomy hood and is generous in the body to wear a really bulky fisherman's sweater. I love it. Very soft, thick wool too!

This coat isn't true to size,You need to order one size up. I have never had this happen at LLBean, their sizing is always perfect. But not with this coat. Someone dropped the ball in the sizing department. So I ordered a size larger than I usually ware and I Love this coat .

As soon as my wife adorned herself with this product she commented about the comfort and agility this Lambswool Duffel Coat offered. She immediately ventured outside amidst the New York City winter weather and felt confident with the quality of this product and the warmth it offered.

Love the coat...wanted a camel colored duffle for years! BUT ....that YKK zipper has to go! My friend got a coat at 1/4 the price, it has a double zipper that works just fine! This one is horrible! I sent one back, second one isn't any better, but I like the coat, so I put up with the bad zipper!

I've had this coat for over a year, so this is my second winter wearing it. I have the Royal plum, and get compliments constantly, even from strangers. Last February I wore it on a trip to Butte Montana and the temps were single digits to -15. This coat kept the wind out and was warm and comfortable.
The only drawback is the zipper. The problem is not because it can zip from both directions. I have other jackets with that feature and it's never been an issue. I think it's just a cheap zipper that doesn't measure up to the quality of the rest of the coat. Sometimes I have no problem getting it to engage, and other times it takes me three or four attempts.
If you can, buy when Bean is offering some kind of discount to help ease the annoyance of the goofy zipper!
