Ok, so this is the 3rd review I've written about this coat, but this last one is one for the records.
Background: I spilled a milkshake all over the front of my beautiful teal duffel coat. Horrified, I immediately cleaned it up as much as possible and the next day took it to the dry cleaners, making sure to explain what had happened. Three days later, I picked the coat up from the cleaners and was speechless: they had ruined it! The soft wool nap was all matted down and rough looking. Where the stains had been looked scrubbed and there were still outlines of the stains in some area. What to do? The coat was sold out in my size and it was still bitter cold winter here in Maine. I sure in heck wasn't going to take it back to the dry cleaners to finish the job. So, resigning myself to its loss, I brushed the coat thoroughly with a clothes brush to loosen and restore what I could of the wool nap. When I was done, although the coat looked better, it was still only a poor facsimile of its original self.
Early in the spring, the thought of washing the coat came to mind. After all, it got wet all of the time from the snow, right? And if it shrunk to the size of a postage stamp, it didn't really matter as it was already ruined and slotted for discard. To make a long story short, last week I finally got up my nerve to do the deed. I washed the coat in a front loader machine on the gentle/delicate cycle using COLD water and Ecos washing detergent. When it was done, I took it out and evaluated it. The condition of the wool was definitely much improved, but it was tight and thick; it also had noticeably shrunk. For the 1st day when it was heaviest with water weight, I zipped it up, fastened the toggles, snapped the neck snap and then draped it over the banister to air dry. The next day, I hung it on a hanger, being sure to use one with enough slant in the shoulders that it wouldn't leave the coat's shoulders misshapen. I continued to air dry it for 3 more days. To minimize wrinkling, each day I checked to be sure that it was still hanging straight on the hanger and rearranged the hood as needed. As it dried, the wool got softer and fluffier, and it relaxed. When it was thoroughly dry, I made my final evaluation: it had come out beautiful!! And while it did shrink, it was only a VERY little and still fits fine. The wool is clean and soft again and it does not even need pressing as it is completely wrinkle-free. It also smells better than a garment from the dry cleaners.
Please note: I definitely do NOT recommend that anyone do this to their coat unless they are willing to risk losing it altogether, which I was. But, for me, it was a last resort that paid off and I DON'T HAVE TO BUY A NEW COAT NEXT WINTER. What a GOOD coat!!!
(Some may think it would have shortened the drying time to spin it out dryer in the washer, but that would have caused much shrinkage and wrinkling.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by asblover In defense of "that hood"
There has been a lot of negative feedback, including from me, on this coat's oversized hood. Now that I have worn the coat during the last 3 month of this extra-snowy winter, I would like to update my original feed back.
The hood design is quite longer than most and it is also deeper, so it comes more forward from the sides. This has proven a HUGH benefit this year for, no matter how cold it was or how much the wind blew, I was NEVER cold because the hood provided such great coverage and protection from the winter weather. Unless I was going to be outside for a while, some of the time I even got away with not wearing a hat under it!
Of course, I didn't initially credit the hood for this. But the light finally came on when I was back wearing my Bean parka while my duffle coat was doing time at the dry cleaners. My face was cold, I HAD To wear a hat under the parka's hood, and I felt I couldn't get away from the wind. I will tell you I was NOT happy to go outside for any reason.
So while it is not the most attractive image, "that hood" IS highly effective and I'm glad it's what it is. I still think it is too long, but not as much as I initially thought.
Note: I found that if I tied a scarf around my neck over the coat, it help to keep the hood in place better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by GreenMoth happy with this coat
I'm 5 ft 2 inches, and short-waisted (my back dress measurement is about 14.5 inches from neckline seam to waist line), currently weigh about 138lbs, bust is around 39 inches.
The coat in size Petite 10 works pretty well (I had tried a Regular size 10, that was too long in the waist. It looked messy).
Ideally, the petite-size should be a little bit shorter neck-waist, but, it is loose enough to make it ok that the waist is a little bit too low. The coat fits comfortably over normal winter clothes.
I wanted a casual coat that would keep me warm and look pretty, without the puffiness of down and without the need for multiple fleece layers underneath.
ALSO ... I wanted a wool coat WITH insulation in the sleeves (yes!),
and with a hood (to prevent drafts down my neck).
This is it!!
Very soft wool; zipper can open from the bottom when needed (for sitting in a car); hood has enough room to be pulled up over a hat without being too snug but is not floppy if pulled up without a hat.
Kept me warm on a 15 degree day with only a winter-wear ribby sweater (no fleece layer).
I wear it with a soft silky neck scarf to stop any drafts at the neck, but it?s not essential.
I Like this coat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by LLBeanAH2015 Defective Zipper
I ordered this coat to replace another LL Bean coat with a broken zipper. Unfortunately, this coat came with a defective zipper. It took me a dozen tries to get the zipper to work for the first time. Even after that, the zipper would work only a portion of the time. I never took off the tags or wore it- not worth it. A coat without a working zipper is useless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Femmetreschic Attractive Fitted Casual Wool Coat
Love this100% Italian Wool updated Duffle coat. The Thinsulate lining + the 100% Wool shell make this coat extremely warm without being heavy or "weighty." The style is fitted & streamlined, so it is flattering& doesn't add extra bulk to one's frame, especially if one wears a petite size. My only compliant is that the 2-way zipper is very difficult to zip up-requires a certain am't of time & fine motor coordination to insert one piece into the other so that you can actually zip it up.

I am very pleased with this coat! I read all the reviews before purchasing and don't understand some of the negative comments I saw. I am a curvy 5'9' (42-33-42); size 16 fits me perfectly, with plenty of room for heavier garments underneath. The shape is not bulky, is slimming with a slight indent at the waist, and the material is very soft. To address some of the negative reviews: Size 16 is true to size, the zipper works just fine and is easy to zip and unzip, the Cobalt blue color is an 'as expected cobalt blue', the exterior pocket is deep enough for my hands and my Iphone 6i, and the outside toggles do not look cheap. I agree that an interior pocket, and the addition of cuffs around the sleeves and neck, would enhance this coat, but the current sleeve style does not gape or create a wind tunnel effect as I saw i other reviews, and the hood does not gape open. The coat is definitely warm - with a scarf and gloves I was hot outside in 25 degree temps. I would have loved this coat in red, and would purchase again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by littlesnowflake looks are deceiving
At first, I was seduced by the classic look, softeness of the wool, general construction. My size 8P fit perfectly. I picked the Lapis blue But I returned it because: 1). the hood is great for glamour but not for keeping your head warm, even with a hat, I could not close it around my neck. 2). pockets not deep and no interior pockets. 3). closure around neck too open. By the way, the zipper can be tamed! but could be of better quality, 4.) Color: very odd: When I first took it out of the box it was a muddy dark blue, ...But in bright daylight, it turned into a gorgeous blue, almost royal blue...It does not stay that color
under artificial light(bus, train, car or indoor) Then the color is really not nice. I do not want a "camelion" coat...
But the main reasons for returning the coat were not just the color, but because I had trouble staying warm around the neck and head. as well at as above mentioned issues.
PLEASE fix the hood, put some practical outside pockets with a flap, Put pockets inside, and make the color stable and I will buy it, because I really liked the style.and would loved to have a choice of red color in my size...

Rated 3 out of 5 by KaitlyninChicago Really Mixed Review
I'll start with the negatives ... What other people say about the zipper are true... the zipper is pure garbage. I would say 50% of the time I literally cannot zip this coat up bc the zipper will not work. OR, the zipper comes undone from the bottom. I have had to rip the zipper apart to get to coat off me at times. If I am paying $230 for a coat, I expect the zipper to work. However, because I like the coat still, and it is very warm, I decided to keep it and perhaps take it to a tailor and have an entirely new zipper put in. (Due to other reviews, I doubt exchanging this coat for a different one will give me one with a better zipper- there is clearly a flaw.) Because of this, I would not recommend this coat to a friend.
The Sizing - I am a dress size 8, 5'7'', 160 lbs. with a large bust. The 12 in this coat was way too big, the 10 was good and I kept it. I wanted a coat that was both flattering and allowed me to wear thick sweaters under it in the winter. The 10 is perfect for this. I honestly probably could have gotten the size 8, it would have been more flattering, but I don't know if my heaviest wool sweaters would fit under. So I kept the 10.
However, I love the style of this coat, and it is definitely warm. Is it -25 as it says? I don't know about that. But I do know that I sweat in it walking a block to the bus stop in the morning with a sweater and scarf on underneath.
Overall, I decided to keep the coat because 1) it is warm and insulated 2) i wanted a winter coat that could be dressed up or down (and not have to wear my hardcore North Face winter parka all the time) and 3) because I think it will last a number of years (except the zipper)
