áby bostonbeanlady Withstood the travels of an intrepid paddler
I am foxyny's sister, and I bought this as a second LL kayak. The first is an LL tandem kayak that my husband and I use when we are at a vacation home we have in Michigan. Foxyny and I recently went on a 7 day camping adventure, and we used the kayak at least once, sometimes twice a day. It proved itself over and over again. We got caught in a strait with a strong undercurrent and our kayaks tipped over, but we managed to push them through the strait, righted them and got safely home. I strongly recommend a kayak tether (not sold at Beans) so you don't have to worry about saving your paddle while busy saving yourself.

Well, the standard advice for buying a kayak is to never buy one you haven't tried. I broke that rule with this purchase. I had read other reviews, seen it recommended for women, and kept looking at it for several years before I bought it one day on a whim (if you can call it a whim after those years I watched it!) in about five minutes. As a 54-year old single woman I wanted something that I could carry to and from the water and also wanted to be able to put it up on my car myself. I'd been warned about the lack of stability of a lighter kayak, so had some concern there. I've taken it out twice now and am totally pleased. The weight is definitely manageable for me....lifting it and putting it in the rack on top of my car has not been an issue. I felt stable in the water. Granted it is a bit less stable than the 52-lb. kayak I was used to using, but after the first few minutes I felt very comfortable. In fact, I think as I get more accustomed to it I will love being able to use my body more for steerage. Now if I can figure out how to get out of the kayak gracefully, it will be perfect! (And...the color is pretty too!)

áby foxyny Great Kayak for Women
I recently used my new calypso kayak for the first time on a 7 day camping trip. I am new to kayaking and purchased the 12 foot calypso on the recommendation of the Discovery Course instructor. For reference, I am 5ft 3, 125 lbs and I can easily manage this kayak by myself. I was on the water every day. It tracked well and was very easy to maneuver. I also purchased the women's Discovery pfd which is extremely comfortable for paddling. Two thumbs up LL Bean!

We kayak in the relatively calm waters of Morro Bay, CA. I was looking for a 12' sit inside kayak that I could load on the car and carry to the beach on my own. I love my Calypso 12! It paddles like a dream, and tracks really well. I like the narrower width, easier for me to paddle, so I can stay out longer. I thought the foam flotation in the front might be in the way, but it doesn't bother me at all, or impede getting in or out of the boat.
I was a little worried about having the boat shipped to California from Maine. What if I wasn't happy? The great customer service representative at LL Bean told me how to inspect the kayak when it arrived and assured me if I didn't like it I could return it.
I'm so glad I took the chance and ordered it, I love it!

This kayak tracks well in the water, and adjustments to the seat and foot rests are easy to make. The slightly narrower than usual design makes it easier to get into the kayak for people like me who like to straddle the kayak to get in. It is light enough that I, as an over-60 woman, can easily carry it around and put it on top of my car for transport.

I have used this on lakes, rivers and even for overnite river trips. It is comfortable, lightweight (very important), tracks very well and has good storage options. It is my "go to" kayak. Love it!

I purchased this kayak package for my wife, who loves to exercise and who worries about me when I take my canoe out to fish by myself. Now she can paddle around the pond, check in on me when she wants, and get all sorts of exercise. The boat came securely packed, and the quality seems excellent. The paddles were inside the hull. The set up directions were simple and straightforward. Unfortunately, we live in western Wisconsin where it snowed last night, April 10!, go figure, so the kayak has been explored thoroughly indoors, adjusted and sat in as we wait for the Spring that will surely come, won't it?
