Rated 5 out of 5 by Pursuit1 The best there is:Gränsfors Bruks Small Forest Axe
I bought this axe 5 or 6 years ago when they were a lot more expensive thinking that with my luck, it might last a year or two. I am happy to say that it is the finest and most handy tool I own. In fact, I would rather have it than a chainsaw, loppers or limb saw pruner. I do not go anywhere without it and keep it in my truck all the time.It came very sharp and I keep it that way with very little effort.
It is an essential piece of hunting equipment and a tool I will always have as it does so many things besides chop wood.
If anyone knows where i can get a new sheath, please let me know. Also, if you have used a smaller personal belt axe of this quality. please advise. The best money I ever spent and now they are priced at a real bargain..

Rated 5 out of 5 by Will1992 High Quality Small Axe
This small axe is very high quality and comes very sharp, almost razor sharp. The handle is unfinished hickory and will need several coats of boiled linseed oil. I enjoy taking care of tools, so that's fun for me, but take that into consideration. The leather sheath's quality is as high, and while it looks like you should baby it, don't. It's an axe; use it! If you purchase a sharpening stone and hone the edge after each use, it will stay extremely sharp and last well beyond your lifetime. It is unlikely that you will find a higher quality small axe anywhere. Do your research and you will see that the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe is the gold standard of small axes, period.

Well, there are less expensive axes around, some of them are very nice, but for the best out there, get you one of these: Gränsfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. Short enough for one handed use but big enough for felling smaller to medium trees, this is THE axe for camping, hiking, survival, or bushcraft. The price if you can catch it on sale is the way to go, and to be honest, you get what you pay for. I have used others with poor results to be honest. None had the grind, or the razor sharp edge this thing has. Buy once, cry once is the motto. Don't be a cheap and settle for something else. You will be glad you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Biobum Great axe, couldn't be more satisfied
I ordered this axe yesterday and received it earlier today, so yet again a great experience with LL Bean. As for the axe itself, I had read in other reviews that this axe comes sharp, but I still was shocked at the edge this axe came with. I'm not sure that the factory edge put on most pocket knives could hold up to this thing. Other initial impressions about the axe was that the leather used to construct the sheath appears to be of good quality, and overall the fit and finish of the whole package is exceptional.
As stated previously, I received this axe today, so my actual hands on use is a bit limited. However, in my short time using the axe the first thing that struck me was how well it is balanced throughout the handle. It feels completely natural to hold it at the butt, or to choke up all the way to the head. After splitting several smallish rounds, the
edge is still shaving sharp and shows no appreciable wear.
As an avid outdoorsman, as well as a field biologist often plagued with low hanging limbs this axe is absolutely ideal for my purposes. No, it would not be the best to fell an established tree, but this axe is very capable for its size. Overall, this is an extremely effective, well made tool that I look forward to passing down to my son one day.

Ordered beginning of Feb 2014. Received mid June. Razor sharp? Wasn't even ground. I couldn't get it to stick in my chopping block! First time I ever saw an axe bounce! Took it to local hardware store that advertised sharpening. They made the edge shiny and uneven but no sharper. When questioned, the sharpener admitted to only having ever sharpened lawn mower blades. Took it from his hands and left. Now I have a very attractive, expensive, but useless ...What?
Hope you have better luck. I'm pretty upset and disappointed.
