by ChagrinFallsScott I Own Both the Small and Large GB Splitters
I just bought the Large splitting axe because my son monopolizes the Small one.
Both the Large and Small axes are great splitting axes. We've split logs up to about 8-in dia pretty handily with the Small axe. The large axe handles these with authority, but there's nothing magical about the Large axe -- it took me a few whacks to halve an 11" dia red oak log. Once halved, quartering was a breeze. I'm sure a more capable woodsman would have done better.
It should be noted that at the time of this review, the data on LLBean.com about the axe weights needs correction and length information could perhaps use clarification.
The Large axe and the Small axe are not the same 56 oz weight, as LLBean.com states in the Compare Item view. Gransfors Bruk reports the Large axe head weighs 3.5 pounds and the Small axe head weighs 2 pounds. That sounds about right because when I put the axes on a shipping scale, the Lg is about 5.5 lbs and the Sm is about 4 lbs.
Their lengths are as reported, Lg 27" and Sm 23", and these lengths are from the butt of the handle to where the handle sticks out of the top of the head. Interestingly GB specs report the Sm Axe handle to be 20" which is only the length of the handle from the *bottom* of the head to the butt.

The large splitting axe I purchased is an excellent tool although the 27 inch handle takes some getting used to since I have to stand closer to the work!!!
The axe is well made and is as advertised in the LL Bean online catalogue.
Read the book it gives some great tips and advice!!!
I would, however, opt for the longer handle but I don't recall seeing any choice from LLBean.
Overall I'm happy with the purchase and since I use a woodstove for heat in the winter I think this axe will make splitting wood easier in the years to come.

What a wonderful, hand made tool. It is all I expected it to be and more. In addition, this axe powers right through oak logs with minimal effort.
The Gransfors Bruks Large Splitting Axe has made splitting firewood so enjoyable that I have had no less than 6 fire pit fires in the last two weeks. The forged head is very high quality, the blade is dead sharp.
I am a casual log splitter / fire pit user so I did my homework on which axe to get and HOW TO USE IT. And that is the caveat here. If you are going to own this beast you need to understand how to use it. First, read the book that accompanies the axe. Then go to YouTube and watch instructions on how to place a log, where to place it and how to swing the axe and the all important foot and leg placement.
This is not a tool for the trial and error crowd.
