Rated 2 out of 5 by GreatLksLvr Needs extra care in washing
Ordered in black, large, about a month ago. Worn 3 times. First two times in laundry, washed with similar clothing on gentle-cycle. Hung to dry. Looked and wore great. The 3rd wash cycle, it was put in with heavier clothes, still on gentle-cycle, but unfortunately went thru dryer on low/delicate. BIG mistake. It's so horribly piled it's unwearable, and nothing comes close to removing the piles. After the first 2 washes, it was still a smooth, black, pretty shirt. Now it's a very fuzzy, ugly dark grey.
Love the shirt. Armholes are conservative, nothing shows. Fits well, wears well, and is very comfortable. Tad short, but tolerable. However, am returning. Not wearable the way it is, even tho it's a cute and very comfortable shirt. If you can take extra care during laundry (or hand wash/hang dry), it's a great shirt. Otherwise go on to something else.

I have this shell in three different colors! I absolutely love the classic simplicity, design, and style. I have washed these shells multiple times and they stay true to their shape, no pilling!

I wish I had read the reviews on the eggplant shell before I bought it. My other indispensable knit components held up well, but this one faded and frayed around the collar and arm holes on the first washing. I thought it was something I was doing wrong, but apparently the problem lies in the fabric. As always the L L Bean staff were extremely accommodating, especially after I ordered and returned the second eggplant shell. Hopefully, the blue strip doesn't have the same problem.

I liked this top when it arrived. I got the purple one. It fit great. It felt oh, so comfortable. It looked cute with just a simple pair of black Indispensable Knit pants. However, it didn't hold up in the wash! The first time I washed it, it didn't look great. But the second time I washed it, it came out looking like it was 15 years old! It had pilled pretty much all over, but particularly right on the front -- to the extent that the purple fabric kind of looked white in that large area! Same thing happened under the arms, around the neckline, and around the edges of the armholes. It basically looked like it couldn't hold up to the friction of wearing it OR washing it! I followed the manufacturer's directions. Fortunately, LL Bean has excellent customer service and allowed me to return it two months after purchase and two washes later (it sat on my desk for 3 weeks waiting for the dreaded chore of calling for a refund). So, it wasn't a terrible experience. But it was a pretty bad product! (Unlike most everything else I buy at LL Bean.)

Rated 1 out of 5 by JeanneMcB indispensable knit shell
I'm very disappointed in this item - a real rarity for me, as I shop at LLBean often very happily. The shell does run small, but the biggest problem with it is that the first time I washed it according to the directions, it frayed/fuzzed along the neckline and arm holes. The material is a little heavier than I would like for summer travel and I would have liked just a little bit lower scoop neck. On the other hand, I love the color and the matching fly away cardigan (which washed and dried beautifully).

Rated 4 out of 5 by curry attrative but snug
For travel I want a loose fitting top, but this was snug in my usual size medium. The length,THANKS TO PETITE SIZING !! was OK. ( Hurray! I have for so long asked LLB for petite lengths in knit tops.)
I am re-ordering in a large petite, and returning the medium.
As some haven mentioned, armholes are rather deep.

The cut of this just isn't flattering?where it hits is what bothers me. Also didn't love the length. Material is super soft so wanted to like it but it just didn't do "good things" at all for my body.

Rated 1 out of 5 by BubblesNJMOm See through and arm holes to large
I was very disappointed with this shirt- I bought it in the cream. First off its cheap looking that the whole suit is out of the same fabric- reminds me of a polyester jumpsuit. The tank should a shimmer to it. The cream is completely see through and looks awful with the black pants because you can see the waist line!!! Also all of these pieces are super heavy and they don't breath because they are a heavy rayon like fabric. I am 5'4 and heavy right now after having a baby- the XL is too large and sloppy looking but tight on my bust. Arm holes are huge. Its a strange shirt because it is skin tight in some places and baggy in others.... not a shirt for a full figured curvy person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by WAtraveler Good fitting and attractive - indispensable!
The new indispensable knits sleeveless shell is a great wardrobe basic. The fit is attractive with a nice neckline and armholes that do not "gap." I ordered my usual size of medium and found the fit to be semi-fitted rather than relaxed. I have both the black and the stripe and fit is identical. These shells were purchased for travel, but would work in almost any setting. The knit is a medium weight and very comfortable. I consider the indispensable knits collection to be a great addition to the LL Bean clothing line. Several years ago I purchased other travel knits from Bean and the new knits surpass the old in styling, comfort and quality.
