DO NOT PURCHASE AT ANY PRICE. I purchased this scale about 18 months ago. It worked well the first time or two that it was used. Now, after only 4 uses, it is essentially useless. The clock, alarm, and light do not work. The scale does work but only after I remove the batteries (new) to reset the computer. The design of the screen and handles is poor. You have to lift the scale up to you eyes to read it. That is difficult if your bag weighs too much, unless you are the Incredible Hulk. Buttons for mode, light, and alarm setting no longer function. This is far below what I expect from Bean. I wonder if they will take it back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Richardsmom Worked well for us
Yes, this has some weight to it, but not enough to deter us from taking it on a recent trip to Iceland. We liked knowing that we had a back-up clock and flashlight, just in case. Regarding the batteries: we had no problem with them. Flipping between modes is intuitive, even for a technologically-challenged person such as me. Knowing that we were within the weight allowances for luggage was reassuring; even so, we allowed for a possible margin of error with the scale, and didn't load our luggage to the weight limit.

I should have read the other reviews before purchasing this. It is VERY heavy compared to other scales. I weighed it and it was just over 9 ounces. The worst part is the battery opening. You need to open it with a coin, which is difficult since it's made of plastic. Then it doesn't close easily. I couldn't get the batteries in properly to see if the scale itself even worked. The handles are also at an awkward angle which would make it hard to read the scale if it did work. I'm returning this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Jonga Accurate for a portable scale but that's all
Worked well as a scale but that was the only function that worked. Returned it to the store and I was informed that is is their most returned item. The quality isn't up to LL Bean standards.

Rated 4 out of 5 by SparkyDesertRat travel scale saves $$$$
After reading the pros and cons from others I feel it is still a good product espically after getting hit with over weight luggage fees. It is alittle bulky but still travels well and having the clock as a back up to cell phone alarm is a plus. Take it along on all my flights.

Rated 2 out of 5 by LeftCoaster It's okay but...
I agree with the other reviewers that this scale is heavy and it's a bit larger than I expected. It's also encumbered by an enormous steel hook that always seems to be in the way.
It has a very sturdy handle that the designer was so proud of that he kindly provided a very redundant second one. . I don't know, maybe it was for left handed use.
In summary, the scale weighs luggage just fine but this is a one travel accessory that will definitely stay home.

My husband is military and we live Europe. We travel frequently for both business and pleasure, and tend to use airlines which impose draconian luggage requirements (Ryan AIr). We also travel back to the States a couple of times per year with a 50lb weight limit for checked luggage.
This scale was a Christmas gift from my mom because she said that she was tired of watching us balance on her bathroom scale while trying to determine how much stuff we could carry home instead of mail to ourselves.
After many attempts to use it, I'm mailing it back to Bean. Here's the cut/paste from the note I included:
The travel scale/flashlight/alarm has not lived up to the standard I expect from LL Bean.
Here are my problems with the scale:
-- Too heavy
-- Does too many things in a mediocre fashion instead of doing one thing (weighing luggage) well.
-- Is difficult to operate. My husband and I are both reasonably intelligent people, but neither of us can easily change the setting from alarm to scale. It's frustrating at best, but when we're already running late for the airport it is infuriating.
Note: I'm going to Bean's newer luggage scale in a few moments. I'll be heading back to visit my mom shortly so stay tuned for the review!

I could not get the unit to function as an alarm at all. It appears to be more complicated than it needs to be to get to that point but in this case I couldn't get there. So, this would only have use as a scale and since it is pretty heavy it isn't something I want to carry around with me. Back it goes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Huldy Stop ... Don't Purchase!!
I have never been unhappy, disappointed or displeased with ANY product from LL Bean that I have purchased up unitl NOW. What a disaster this Travel Alarm / Scale is. To quote the poetess Elizabeth Barrett Browning, "let me count the ways...."
1. Heavy, heavy, heavy ... if you are concerned with the weight of your luggage, once you have used the luggage scale to check the weight of your baggage and drop this in your luggage you will immediaely be overweight!
2. Poorly constructed battery compartment. The battery compartment is difficult, at best, to open and even more difficult to close. A coin is recommended to use to open and close the compartment ... a coin is too small and a screwdriver is too large. The cap, once closed is not very secure ... it flies open and the batteries and spring loaded top catapault across the room.
3. Poor design. Among the handles (2 of them), the large hook for the scale, the barrel shaped battery compartment, the flashlight and the wieght you are continually turning this from one side to the other trying to get it into the proper position for the function that you are wanting to use. Too many "gadgets" ... alarm, clock, flashlight, scale ... make this awkward. Obviously, I am not bright enough to use this without injuring myself, especially on the large hook that flops around out of control.
4. Poor quality. The material used seems flimsy. That is possibly because there are too many "gadgets" squeezed into one unwieldy product.
I have wasted my money on this. I would love to return it, but in trying to open the hard-to-get-into battery compartment with the recommended coin / screwdriver I have marred the outside.
A positive note, the box that this waste-of-money-lemon came in was very nice.

I bought this luggage scale for a trip to Iceland where we would be flying 4 separate times. It worked fine for weighing the luggage. But it was especially handy as an alarm clock. (I didn't have a need for the flashlight.)
It is a heavy device so I wasn't worried about storing it in my luggage. It's a little awkward to use for weighing the luggage. But I don't think there is any way around that.
The big hook gets in the way when standing it up as a clock. But overall I found this device to be very useful. I will be taking it on all (air travel) trips from now on.
