Rated 5 out of 5 by FishinBeanerME Best Spin Fishing Outfit
I bought the Discovery 6' 6 Spin Outfit for my dad a couple years back as a Xmas gift and shortly after decided to buy one for myself. He and I will both tell you, this is the nicest spin outfit we have ever used.
At 6' 6, the medium rod makes casting absolutely effortless and the reel is smooth as butter. The discovery series is a clear step up from the (while still great) angler series and is well worth the extra money.
I'm an avid fisherman and have been rough on this rod for about two years now and it still performs flawlessly (perhaps that is a kudos to the awesomely rugged travel case that comes with this outfit). The original line that came on it is still going strong and I've had no reason to replace it yet. I expect this combo will be going strong for many years to come. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if I bought a few extra just to have!

I got this rod/reel combo this year and have used it at least 50-60 times. Excellent, I fished for Large/Small mouth Bass, Yellow Perch,Bluegill, Walleye, Catfish, etc. The rod is sensitive enough to feel the bites big and small. The reel is a little weak but not a real problem. The price makes it a great deal.

by BloxhamDB7 Great Versatile Set
After not having fished for over 20 years, I decided to give it another try. Like everyone else, I did various internet searches, read online reviews, and looked at every major manufacturer?s site. The one thing I learned is that there are no shortages of rod and reel combo sets. After 2-3 hours, it was clear that I was on information overload when all I wanted was a basic quality set for some occasional fishing. I made my decision to purchase the LL Bean Discovery set (medium) because at this price point, which includes a carrying case along with the reputation and customer service of LL Bean, it was best buy. There were other reviews that the rod was too stiff, reel is not good, etc. However, these types of sets are clearly geared toward the casual/occasional fisher and not those who are looking for a specific setup better suited to buying individual components.
I used the set for the first time this past weekend. I was intending to use it bass, but it became apparent after 30 minutes without a bite and seeing people reeling in catfish after catfish, that I should rethink my approach. While this set isn?t designed for heavy catfishing, I wasn?t going to leave empty handed. Changed the leader and I was pulling in blue and flathead catfish weighing 3-10 lbs. each. While an E-Glass rod and heavier reel would have been better, the Discovery set got the job done.

Rated 2 out of 5 by BigGreen63 After 65 Years, My First Disappointment
My first shopping experience was in 1949, climbing the wooden stairs to the second-floor showroom. In the 65 years since I have never been disappointed in an LL Bean product and I can assure you that there have been scores of them. I purchased the Discovery Spin Outfit for my 7 year old grandson for Christmas - his first fishing rod. Upon unpacking, I found the reel almost impossible to fix to the rod, certainly something that my grandson will not be able to do. The rod itself is absolute stiff from handle to tip, making it not a good practice or learning experience. This is not a good outfit to teach a child the joy of fishing. I should have opted for the bamboo rod and a bobber. All that being said, LL Bean is still the best run company in the USA.

I went all over looking for a good deal on a rod n reel combo. I have always loved L.L. Bean but never thought of buying a rod from them. I ended up in Freeport around christmas and fell in love with the rod. It took me a while to decided if I really needed a new rod but after looking at my old one all tore up I had to purchase this combo. It was at my door within two days. The reel is the smooth. The rod responds. The case is handy. I do not regret buying this rod at all. I wouldn't trade it for the world now.

Rated 2 out of 5 by TryToFish Reel Is Poor Quality
Purchased this outfit in the winter and was looking forward to giving it a try. First time out this spring - Rod seems decent but reel is of very poor quality. Bail doesn't work properly and after only a few casts into my pool w/ a 1/4 ounce casting plug, ended up w/ a huge birds nest.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Fletch99 A good outfit
I bought the 6' light outfit and am very happy with the purchase. The rod is somewhat stiff, but very good quality. The reel is also very good quality which makes this a value. I've found that manufacturers often use poor quality reels to provide a less expensive outfit. LL Bean didn't skimp here! I've used this setup many times the past year and it's still working like new.
My only complaint with this setup is the quality of the monofilament line that comes on the reel. I'm not sure of it's strength, but I'd bet it is 2lb test or poor quality 4lb test. This seems more appropriate for an ultra-light setup. After my first use and a couple lost fish and lures, I immediately switched to a higher quality line.
With the new line, this setup is one of my "go to" rods!

Rated 2 out of 5 by CustomerSince1973 STIFF not UL
I purchased the 5' discovery spinning rod for my family. It is described as UL "Ultralight" 2-6 lb. line. Clearly someone at LL Bean either did not properly inspect these or it was never designed properly in the first place. The rod is incredibly stiff - not "fast" just plain stiff. There is no taper involved and it is literally a no-flex piece of graphite blank with a reel seat, cork and guides (the seat is a Fuji knock-off and functions poorly). The rod is attractive, decently constructed and offered at a bargain price. With a little care, Beans could have produced this with true UL (or any light action) specifications. Would not have cost them a penny more. Someone at Beans with any angling experience should have "discovered" this. The best part of the deal is the beautiful case that accompanies the rod. I'm sending mine back and hope they don't charge me for return shipping. This is the first time I have ever reviewed a Bean product and I am sorry it had to be on the negative side.

by NorgeTightLiner Little bit of Luck
The Misses purchased the 5-6" light weight outfit for my birthday recently. I landed a 13" largemouth on the first cast out of the case after an easy adjustment to the drag system.
Casts everything nicely from a small Red Devil to large Jitterbugs and all the rubber in between...
An avid flyfisherman for decades I own some of those top dollar 4-digit outfits but I can tell this $79 Rod & Reel will give me just as many hours of enjoyment.
It's found a permanent spot stowed away in my truck for easy access, quick fishing for just about any fresh water species.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Rileyrocks My best- buy Goto Combo
Bought the 5'6" Discovery Rod Reel Combo, used it in Canada at Chiblow Lake and was extremely happy with this Combo, very balanced and a good looking professional looking outfit. Caught many 1-2 lb Smallmouth Bass along with a 2.8 and 3.4 Smally. Will use this rod and reel as my Goto outfit. With the hard case this is hard to beat for the quality and price. would recommend to anyone
