A friend recommended we buy this convenient scale before traveling overseas on an airline that allows only 44 pounds of stowed luggage and 11 pounds of carry-on per person. It's easier to decide what to leave out when you're at home than when you are in the middle of an airport! Love the L. L. Bean quality.

best scale ever as you just lift wait for the beep and set the luggage down. this scale will hold the weight for several seconds and has an automatic shut off to save battery power. love it!!

Purchased this for my grandson for Christmas - at his request. He'll be going off to college soon and he expects to 'really need' these scales. An older friend has one and recommended it to him.

This is my second Balanzza mini scale so hopefully it won't konk out too. Can't figure out how to open the battery compartment , , , what kind of tool is needed? Want to slide the battery saver back in but it's very difficult.

This is compact as compared to a previous scale I bought 5 years ago from Bean. And a better design as the last one had a light and the battery cover disfigured when opening with any type of coin. I'm looking forward to it taking up less space in my luggage!

by pcsqueen Excellent - But with One Significant Flaw
After owning a different Bean luggage scale that was terrible (and was returned), I was quite happy to see this one introduced into the lineup.
It does what it's supposed to do - accurately weighs luggage - and nothing more - no flashlights, alarm clocks, or other complications. It's small, therefore perfect for stashing anywhere.
Then, you ask, what's the significant flaw???
The nylon drawstring bag which comes with the scale is inadequate protection. If it's not stored, alone, in a firm box or case, items that press against will turn it on, depleting the battery.
My husband and I found that out two days ago while packing to come home from vacation. We knew we were at the airline's weight limit, so wanted to be sure that we'd distributed our stuff properly. Imagine our frustration when, shortly before having to check out of our hotel, my husband had to run around a small Finnish town looking for replacement batteries!
The situation was further complicated by the need to remove the teeny-tiny screws that attach the battery cover to the handle; they're not only miniscule, but are not located on the surface of the plastic. Instead, they're set in about 2 millimeters, which necessitates using an equally teeny-tiny screwdriver to remove them. (See photo #1)
Fortunately, my husband was able to find a shop which carried replacement batteries AND the proper tool, we made weight, and got to the airport on time.
As soon as I began unpacking, I found an old hard-shell sunglass case in which the scale will now live. It's not perfect because the hook doesn't fit in the case, but I can zip it almost closed around the actual scale, shove everything into the original Bean storage bag, and know that I won't be faced with a dead battery the next time I use it. (See photo #2)
I guess I should also go get extra batteries and the proper screwdriver, too!
Unless Bean changes the scale's storage, if you purchase it, you should consider something similar.

This is way better than trying to hold my suitcase in my arms while I weigh myself on the bathroom scales. Simple and easy.

I have one of these and love it! I agree that if one's bag is heavy, it is hard to lift if one's arm strength is weak, but no other scale that one has to lift will work either, then. One could always set up a Pulley if one doesn't have someone else to lift the bag. I gave one to my son, and he loves it. However, he just emailed me that the screen was damaged in his bag on his most recent trip so I am ordering a new one for him. He will just wrap something protective around it next time, or bury it deeper in his bag. Ours did not come with protective cases. That would be nice if that is possible. Maybe it would fit in an old eyeglasses case. The only problem I had once is that it inadvertently got turned on in my luggage and the batteries went dead, and I had to find new batteries for it. So I always carry an extra set of batteries in my luggage. I have had mine for well over a year and my son's for 8 months. It has weighed exactly the same as the airport scales. It's useful for other things besides luggage, too. I could not live without it!
