The mat is really pretty looking until you start to use it. I have a large dog and his hair and food gets stuck in the mat's divots. It doesn't sweep up easily and the hair and food starts to look really gross. I went back to using my old regular door mat that doesn't show the mess and you can easily sweep it.

This carpet is great for attracting dirt, but almost impossible to clean. We've tried everything, but the animal hair and dirt will not come out. This is the first LL Bean item I've been disappointed with.

I've had this mat for at least 2 years now. I purchased it to go under large dog bowls as the other pet mats weren't big enough but I needed it to fit in a certain spot so it couldn't be too large. I needed something to trap the water and save my laminate floors because my labs were messy. I already had a water hog for the back door in red in the leaf pattern (wish they still had it) and wanted another red mat. When we move I'll get a bigger one to attempt to catch the Great Dane slobber. I vacuum it regularly and hose it off outside when it needs it. Love love love these mats. I've never had a fading or shredding problem but I know how fantastic their guarantee is so I would not hesitate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by mtnfever even better as motorhome stair runners
I liked this mat so well under our dog's dishes in our motorhome that I bought another for the motorhome steps. These steps are very different lengths and widths than normal home stairs so the Herring-Bone mat was the closest stock fit. And, of course, was still just too cute for words!
I cut it lengthwise to fit the bottom two steps and trimmed just a "little off the sides, please", which I had to (carefully!) use a box cutter as the fabrics are so tough. The two pieces have worked very well to capture the small gravel pieces and wet sand that we've been in so far. No fraying at all but the pieces are very contained in the steps' well.
The gravel shakes out easily outside the door and dog hair vacuums easily too.
I'm now contemplating whether to get a much larger size for our garage entrance at home especially since it's getting on mud season there...

I bought 2 of these mats because I loved the pattern and my experience with other waterhog mats has been very good. I'm using one of the mats in the front hall and only storing boots on it after they have been wiped on 2 outdoor mats. The residual salt on the boots has completely discolored and eaten through the mat in one season. I'm going to have to throw it away at the end of the winter. Perhaps LLBean should warn customers about using it for this purpose I expected a more durable product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by mtnfever No "bones" about it--it's great!
I was looking for a mat to put under our dog's dishes (and the small garbage can# in our motorhome. She does have non-spill dishes, which she seems to regard as a challenge and dribbles water drips and food crumbs around her bowls. This is not good in a moving motorhome.
The water hog mat looked like it would stop the drips and crumbs from rolling around the motorhome and the herring-"bone" pattern was too cute to resist.
The mat works great. I was able to get a color that coordinates with the floor and the size fit perfectly under the typical RV/apt-size fridge. The drips are held until they evaporate #we live in the very dry Southwest, however. YMMV) and the crumbs are easy to shake out or vacuum.
I'm very happy to have this mat.

by IndyMama2 Quality is lacking
Purchased this in green to go under my dog's food/water bowls. The green color is beautiful, and the bone pattern on the mat is very cute. It seems good quality, except the edges of the mat are fraying and shedding. It looks really bad and it's very annoying. I'm considering returning it for a new rug, but afraid I'll have the same issue.

We have this old dog who is, I swear, the messiest eater I've ever seen. Short of making him eat outside, nothing could save us from having to clean up after he eats. But at least this mat reduces the fallout. Which is good, because he won't eat outside.
