Prionnsias Warm as toast. Never mind the naysayers.
This is an excellent very warm coat, beautifully made and executed. I had my eye on this for last two or three years but always felt it was beyond my needs and price point. I finally broke down recently when it went on sale and I also had a discount. I have several other similar vintage Barnstormer type Mackinaw coats including an original horsehide police model. This is the equal of any of them. there is a reason this type of coat was so popular back in the day before central heating and radiators in cars etc. The coat is made in Turkey a country with a strong history of leather work. The outside is of quite bright green colour (significantly brighter than apparent from the screen shot). The inside is lined with a full sheepskin shearling liner approximately 1" thick. The liner is itself lined with a slayer of cotton duck separating it from the outer shell, a real nice detail, effectively two coats in one. The sleeves and pockets are lined with a chamois like fleecy material, the sleeves being insulated also. The buttons appear to be real horn. There is a full second set inside the left breast to fasten the "opposite" side within the double breast preventing droop. Typically you get one button if any in this location. These are effectively the spare button many of the other reviewers were complaining about not having. The attachment is reasonably secure but like all buttons may need reinforcing. My only complaint is that this is only available up to XL in a regular length. I would say suitable for persons of ?6'2" height x 250 max. I could have used a bigger size and certainly a longer length. I need the sleeve extension to make a normal length on my arm. I am keeping it anyway I have decided.
For the begrudgers who complained about the weight I would suggest they stick to their fleeces and micro fibres. This is a proper old fashioned coat and weight the part. Not for the faint hearted or weak shouldered.

this coat is amazing, the warmest coat ever and very handsome.
fashion designer marc jacobs did a cheap knock off of this coat this season using faux sheep skin (acrylic) and fake leather and he's charging $899.
yes the buttons do fall off but after reading the other reviews i was expecting this and added additional stitching.
i never thought i'd say it but i wish it had been colder this year so i could have worn it more.

This is the first LLBean product that I have found that is not worthy of the LLBean name. As others have said -the buttons fall off. That is not good in cold weather .On my coat they started falli ng off after 1 hour!! The closing system is archaic and very poorly designed . I have sent it back already and do not plan on getting another.
Beans products are usually outstanding - NOT this one .

This coat is a throw back to the Makinaw style of the late 1800's.
As a Cowboy Action Shooter, period correct clothing is a big part of it. This coat fits right in.
The coat is warm for the cold days when we are shooting. The fit is true to size. Buttons will have to be reinforced. They will not hold up, a minor problem that I took care of. I would like some spare buttons for none come with the coat. Customer Service said they will see if some can be obtained and sent to me (there has to be some around, like where the coat is put together). I am very happy with this coat and for the price I paid, I am twice as happy!! I would recomend this coat to anyone looking for a warm vintage coat. This coat well made and should last a life time. I am sorry it was not available years ago!!

OKHiker Great vintage look.
I bought this coat for myself in my vintage (1930s) equipped hike of the Appalachian Trail in the winter of 2010. I stood out, from the few thru hikers that hiked in that season. The coat is warm, very warm. I stood(sat) for hours at a time packing my things at temperatures of -10F* in the open air lean-to's each morning and evening, Most days, it was too hot to wear in direct sunlight so I carried it on my pack. In one instance, I fell off a icy bog bridge into a creek of freezing cold water, and due to the nature of shearing I was none the colder for it.
As mentioned by another reviewer, the buttons are beautiful, but poorly attached. I noticed this problem when the coat arrived, so I carried heavy duty nylon thread, and a thick canvas needle with me to make field repairs. Each button has fallen off over the months of use and was easily patched.
This coat is heavy, about 8 pounds of sheepskin and heavy cotton. It is not an ultra light technical parka, goretex, or any such modern homogenous clothing.
Without a backpack with a hip belt, cold wind often blows up underneath. When I visited NYC I saw an actual vintage 1920's version of the very coat in a vintage shop and noticed the original one had a trench coat style hipbelt, something this reproduction would greatly benefit from.
In closing I'd like to thank L.L.Bean and Alex Carleton, for continuing the tradition of timeless practical clothing.

This coat is absolutely beautiful...the fit is great...it looks really good. The problem is that the coat is sooooo heavy...actually too heavy...my husband said it was like wearing weights on your back. Sorry...really wanted to love this coat.

Rated 2 out of 5 by MOMNYC Buttons are a problem
I bought this coat for my son. He loves it and it is extremely warm. Very stylish with a vintage look. We had to return it once because the buttons pulled off within a week of use. The second one was not any different. The coat did not come with any spare buttons. They are unique to this coat so not replaceable. That is the only flaw.

This shearing coat is maybe the nicest quality item of clothing I have owned. It is rugged construction and heavy. In the coldest of weather a short sleeve T can be worn underneath and abundant warmth remains. The shammy in the sleeves and pockets give the coat an elegant soft feel on bare skin. The length keeps the middle region warm. The sleeves and collar are adjustable for different conditions. I have been wearing this coat to work and to walk on my breaks in single digit weather and it is super comfy. There is great attention to detail in the construction of this coat. The buttons say L.L.Bean on them. I will be enjoying this coat for years to come. If there is a weak point in this deal it is the fastening of the buttons - that could be beefed up a bit but I am not complaining. Cheers!
